RAF pilot Cyril Barton died 80 years ago after steering his damaged plane away from the houses of Ryhope.
Transcript
00:00 Alan Mitchison has never forgotten the RAF hero whose heroics saved hundreds of lives
00:07 in riot. It was 80 years ago when pilot officer Cyril Barton was returning from an ill-fated
00:15 raid on Nuremberg in a crippled Halifax bomber plane. He was forced to crash land after running
00:23 out of fuel. Cyril was only 22 when he died from his injuries but he was posthumously
00:31 awarded a Victoria Cross for his bravery after doing his utmost to avoid the houses of riot
00:38 before he crashed. Alan Mitchison was only 12 at the time but he saw it all from the
00:45 windows of his parents' house. Alan, now 92, has kept his own memorial to the war hero
00:53 in his home. On the 80th anniversary we honour Cyril and Alan, the man who never forgot the
01:02 hero of riot.
