00:00 My next guest was writing a book about how to manage your finances when he was diagnosed
00:04 with cancer.
00:05 And while fighting for his life, he realized there were striking parallels between managing
00:09 your health and your wealth.
00:11 Here to help us heal our bodies and our bank accounts is a renaissance man.
00:14 He's not only a Harvard trained lawyer, but he's an actor and now he's an author.
00:18 Hill Harper, welcome to the show.
00:19 Great to be here.
00:20 Thank you, Dr. Oz.
00:21 How you doing?
00:22 Well, I'm happy to report that I'm completely cancer free now.
00:27 Congratulations.
00:28 So, the title of the book I'll give everybody is called The Wealth Cure.
00:33 Yes.
00:34 The Wealth Cure.
00:35 Why?
00:36 Why that title?
00:37 Well, you know, it's an interesting title.
00:38 It refers to the fact that when I was dealing with cancer, I was working on a book about
00:42 finances.
00:43 So many people have anxiety around money and I realized that the same methodology that
00:47 the doctors were using to cure me, you could use to cure your finances.
00:52 So from health cure to wealth cure, the same steps.
00:56 Health and wealth are so linked.
00:58 It's amazing.
00:59 They are linked in a lot of ways.
01:00 One causes problems in the other.
01:01 So here's what we're going to do.
01:02 We're going to apply your thoughts because Hill's come up with three steps to improving
01:05 health and wealth.
01:06 We're going to put them to work for Melissa, who's in our audience.
01:09 Let's do it.
01:10 Now, she wants to lose 100 pounds and get out of $30,000 of debt.
01:14 Is that right?
01:15 That's true.
01:16 Welcome to the show.
01:17 Thank you.
01:18 Hi, Melissa.
01:19 Hi, how are you?
01:20 How are you?
01:21 So, if I'm going to ask this question, and it's just pretty straight up, how does life
01:22 get out of control?
01:23 I mean, how do you fall that much into debt?
01:25 How do you put on that much weight when you don't want to?
01:27 I have had a lot of medical issues.
01:29 I work a full-time job.
01:31 I got married.
01:32 I have a three-year-old son.
01:33 And I just don't have time for myself anymore.
01:35 I put everybody else first, but not myself.
01:37 And, Dr. Oz, you know what's so interesting about this link between health and wealth?
01:41 If you were to ask people, what's the number one cause of personal bankruptcies, people
01:46 would mostly say, oh, somebody bought a house they couldn't afford.
01:49 But the actual number one cause of personal bankruptcies is health issues, catastrophic,
01:53 medical, number one cause of bankruptcies.
01:55 So Melissa, we're going to do some work with you.
01:58 Are you okay?
01:59 Okay.
02:00 Okay.
02:01 This is a three-step program.
02:02 Step number one is very simple.
02:03 It's called the Rule of 15.
02:04 It's 15 minutes a day of walking.
02:08 Yes.
02:09 What I need, so with each of these steps, I'm going to need a commitment from you.
02:12 Okay.
02:13 So the first one, the Rule of 15, is I need 15 minutes a day of walking in addition to
02:17 whatever other exercise you're doing.
02:18 I would love for you to do it first thing in the morning, get that metabolism kicked
02:21 off, okay?
02:22 And then if we do that, we're going to get 15 pounds minimum in a year off the top, without
02:27 changing a thing.
02:28 We're going to change some other things that are going to ramp that up.
02:30 So 15 minutes, can you do that?
02:32 Yes, I can do that.
02:33 Okay.
02:34 So next step, the other 15 is $15 a day.
02:37 Now we're going to have to save that.
02:38 Now, I went through your budget.
02:40 You can do it.
02:41 Don't roll your eyes.
02:42 She's okay with the walking.
02:43 This is a problem.
02:44 Okay, no, no.
02:45 We're going to figure out, and I'll show you how.
02:46 I went through your budget, and this is just one way.
02:47 There's multiple ways in your budget that we could do this, but this is one way.
02:50 Now this is a breakfast you normally eat and purchase.
02:53 This is a lunch you normally eat and purchase.
02:54 What we're going to do with you is, you don't need this cream cheese and bagel that you
02:59 buy.
03:00 At home, you can make a better, tastier breakfast for much less.
03:03 We don't need to buy these chips.
03:04 We don't need to have that chocolate chip cookie for lunch.
03:06 We're going to actually bag a lunch and bring it.
03:08 So that's going to give us $13.
03:10 That's just automatically a day, without changing that much.
03:13 And then we come over to your coffee, okay?
03:15 So use a name brand coffee, which tastes delicious, but there's a generic brand that
03:19 tastes the same.
03:20 In fact, oftentimes, you know, they're sourcing their coffee from the exact same farms.
03:25 It's the same coffee, and we're going to save you $2.
03:28 So this saves you $15 a day without changing too much.
03:31 Okay.
03:32 Could you do that?
03:33 Definitely.
03:34 I think so.
03:35 And if you do this $15 a day, Dr. Oz, this is what happens with her wealth.
03:39 $5,500 in a year, right?
03:42 Yes.
03:43 Idea of leverage.
03:44 Okay, step number two is skinny food equals fat wallet.
03:48 Yes.
03:49 Explain what that means.
03:50 Skinny food equals fat wallet.
03:51 People come up to me, Dr. Oz, and they say, "Hell, you know, I'm trying your wealth cure
03:54 methodology from your book.
03:55 I'm trying to do it, but the only way I can eat cheap are doing these value meals at these
04:00 unhealthy restaurants."
04:01 So it plays against what you're arguing.
04:03 I say, "You're absolutely wrong."
04:04 There are healthy foods out there for under $2 each.
04:08 So I just have some examples.
04:10 Whole wheat pasta, under $2.
04:11 Canned salmon, frozen vegetables, spinach, broccoli, eggs, and canned beans.
04:16 Now these are all under $2, and we have a little sample meal here.
04:22 This is a salmon pasta.
04:24 In this case, a little value meal with those french fries we don't need.
04:27 Okay, come over here.
04:28 Step number three is an important one.
04:30 You're going to volunteer.
04:32 Volunteer to lose weight and volunteer to save money.
04:34 Let's go through this.
04:35 I call it serve yourself and serve others.
04:39 Okay?
04:40 So, there's so many different scientific studies out there that show if you are, when you volunteer,
04:46 when you help people, you're just happier.
04:48 It feeds you.
04:49 Now, the great thing about being happy, happier people, they binge less in terms of spending
04:54 and they binge less in terms of food.
04:57 What I need a commitment from you though is just two days a month of service to somebody
05:02 else.
05:03 Show up at your local school.
05:05 Whatever, whatever.
05:06 Mow someone's lawn.
05:07 It doesn't matter.
05:08 Just two days a month of service.
05:10 Okay.
05:11 Could you do that?
05:12 Yes.
05:13 This is definitely something that I could do.
05:14 It's easy and affordable.
05:16 And that's what the wealth cure is about.
05:18 And the most important thing, Dr. Oz, I think about the wealth cure is remembering how wonderful
05:23 you are.
05:24 I love to do affirmations.
05:25 Melissa, just do this quick affirmation with me, right?
05:27 Say I'm fine.
05:28 I'm fine.
05:29 And fine stands for this.
05:30 I'm fantastic.
05:31 I'm fantastic.
05:32 I'm interesting.
05:33 I'm interesting.
05:34 I'm necessary.
05:35 I'm necessary.
05:36 And I'm exceptional.
05:37 I'm exceptional.
05:38 Melissa, you are fine and you're going to do great.
05:39 You can do the wealth cure.
05:40 Yeah.
05:41 Thank you.
05:42 Thank you, Mrs. Jordan.
05:43 Everyone's going home today with a copy of Hill's book to help achieve their personal
05:47 wealth cure.
05:48 We'll be right back, everybody.
