00:00 There's nothing we can say to the family of Sarah Everard and all those who loved her
00:05 that can ever convey how deeply, deeply sorry we are.
00:08 Wayne Cousins' crimes were horrific. The fact that he abused his position as Metropolitan
00:12 Police Officer to carry them out represents the most appalling betrayal of trust. It also
00:18 damages the relationship between the public and the police and exposes long-standing fundamental
00:23 flaws in the way the police decide who's fit to be an officer and the way we pursue those
00:28 who corrupt our integrity once they get in.
00:31 The report published today is an urgent call to action for all of us in policing. We must
00:35 go further, faster, to earn back the trust of all those whose confidence in policing
00:40 has been shaken by the events of recent years.
00:44 Regardless of the significant progress we've made over the past year, the scale of the
00:47 challenge that's needed inevitably means it will take time and our work is certainly not
00:51 yet complete.
00:53 The majority of our Met colleagues share my own determination to reform, both by confronting
00:57 the risks posed by predatory men in policing and also improving our protection of women
01:03 and children across London.
