00:00 Chad's opposition leader Yayadio has been killed in a shootout with security forces,
00:05 according to the country's state prosecutor.
00:08 "This attack resulted in dozens of injuries and deaths, including the death of Mr Yayadio,
00:15 president of the PSF, yesterday, 28th February 2024.
00:20 Twenty-six people have been arrested and investigations are underway to determine the cause of these
00:24 unfortunate events."
00:28 The leader of the country's socialist PSF party, Diyo's death comes a day after intense
00:33 clashes and violence in the capital that saw heavy fighting and military presence outside
00:38 the PSF headquarters and government accusations blaming Diyo and his party for deadly attacks
00:44 on the National Security Agency.
00:46 Diyo had denied any role in the attacks and denounced an attempt to sideline him ahead
00:51 of the presidential election, where his cousin's name, President Mohamed Dibi, is likely to
00:56 be on the ballot.
00:58 Earlier this week, Chad's electoral commission set an official date for the vote that could
01:02 return the Central African state to constitutional rule, three years after the military seized
01:08 power, with the first round set for May 6th.
01:11 Dibi, named head of the transition in 2021, had vowed to return to civilian rule within
01:16 18 months, but ended up extending the transition period by another two years.
