00:00 The first solid waste management facility in Paranaque was officially opened
00:05 by the head of a non-profit organization
00:08 called Community Organized Resource Allocation or CORA.
00:12 This is Joshua Garcia's report.
00:14 Residents of Paranaque now have access to recyclable materials
00:21 such as plastic bottles, cartons, paper, cans, and more
00:25 that have a point system that can be used to buy vegetables, rice, food, or electronic cash.
00:30 For example, for 1 kilo of soft plastics or sachets of shampoo,
00:34 10 points is equivalent to saving.
00:37 And for up to 8 kilos, you can buy 1 kilo of onions,
00:41 12 kilos of sachets of plastic, in exchange for 1 kilo of potatoes.
00:45 According to Senro, this is a big help in their waste management.
00:50 Especially since the only source of waste in the city is plastic waste.
00:53 We give seminars and information to each person
00:57 so that they can learn how to segregate waste.
01:03 In one community, we have offices up to 16 barangays.
01:08 We can give seminars and lessons regarding waste segregation.
01:13 Part of the ongoing project, Enhancement of Marine Litter Management in Manila Bay,
01:18 is the initiative of a 5-year program that is worth 8.2 million US dollars
01:22 implemented by the DNR, US Agency for International Development or USAID,
01:27 and Korea International Cooperation Agency or KOICA Philippines.
01:31 If we are at source and we are segregating,
01:34 first of all, we don't need to connect it with the LGU or barangay
01:40 if we are not going to use it in a more productive way.
01:45 At the same time, we are making sure that it will not go anywhere.
01:49 First of all, to the waterways, rivers.
01:52 For example, our river here is going to Manila Bay.
01:57 That is one major focus of the project.
02:01 According to the Community Organized Resource Allocation of KORA,
02:05 since the launch of the Eco-Ikot Center in 2022,
02:09 more than 50,000 kilos of recyclable materials that were once thrown in the garbage were reduced.
02:15 Women empowerment is also strong
02:17 because it is women who are the leaders in this cause.
02:20 I saw that our surroundings are so dirty.
02:26 I want to clean it first before they do.
02:30 I want to clean it.
02:33 Let's protect our mother nature.
02:35 Aside from Barangay San Isidro,
02:37 KORA also targets the opening of solid waste management facilities
02:40 in Barangay Dionisio in Paranaque
02:42 and Barangay 128 Smoky Mountains in Manila
02:45 and later, in the barangays throughout the country.
02:48 We are really eager to help in the problem of solid waste management.
02:53 And of course, we hope that this way,
02:55 not only in cleaning the environment,
02:58 but also to help our fellowmen.
03:00 Our dream is to have an Eco-Ikot Center in every barangay in the Philippines.
03:04 Not just in the city, but in the barangay itself.
03:06 Because in the barangay, the change and solid waste management really starts.
03:10 Joshua Garcia for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
