Jailed Russian opposition leader and President Vladimir Putin critic Alexei Navalny, 47, has died in prison, the Office of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia said in a statement Friday, per reports by multiple news outlets.

03:02 have persecuted, poisoned, and imprisoned Alexei Navalny.

03:14 our hearts go out to his wife and to his family.

03:20 Beyond that, his death in a Russian prison

03:26 and the fixation and fear of one man

03:32 only underscores the weakness and rot

03:35 at the heart of the system that Putin has built.

03:38 Russia's responsible for this.

03:41 We'll be talking to many other countries concerned

03:46 about Alexei Navalny, especially if these reports bear out

03:51 Alex Navalny was an incredibly brave fighter

03:54 against corruption.

03:54 And he gave up everything in campaigning

03:57 for what he believed in.

03:58 And my heart goes out to his wife and to his family.

04:02 And we should be clear about what has happened here.

04:05 Putin's Russia imprisoned him, trumped up charges against him,

04:10 poisoned him, sent him to a Arctic penal colony,

04:14 and now he's tragically died.

04:16 And we should hold Putin accountable for this.

04:19 And no one should be in any doubt

04:21 about the dreadful nature of Putin's regime in Russia

04:24 after what has just happened.

04:26 Will there be consequences for Russia now?

04:28 Well, there should be consequences,

04:29 because there's no doubt in my mind,

04:31 this man was a brave fighter against corruption

04:34 for justice, for democracy.

04:36 And look what Putin's Russia did to him.

04:39 They trumped up charges, they imprisoned him,

04:41 they poisoned him, they sent him to an Arctic penal colony,

04:43 and he's died.

04:45 And that is because of the action

04:47 that Putin's Russia took.

04:48 No one can look at this regime now

04:49 and not recognise it for the truly dreadful nature

04:53 that it has.
