00:00 As you know, yesterday we experienced a tragic event during a time that was
00:04 meant for celebration. The law enforcement response was exemplary.
00:08 Those in attendance also responded. They helped one another and even
00:13 physically stopped a person who was believed to be involved in the incident.
00:17 I want to thank the people who acted bravely yesterday alongside law
00:22 enforcement to include the Kansas City Fire Department.
00:26 Your selfless act did not go unnoticed. First and foremost, I want to stress
00:31 that preliminary investigative findings have shown there was no nexus to
00:35 terrorism or homegrown violent extremism. This appeared to be a
00:40 dispute between several people that ended in gunfire.
00:43 During the overnight hours, we learned there are 23 victims of yesterday's
00:49 shooting.
00:50 One of our victims, Elizabeth Galvin, 43 years old,
00:56 died. The 22 victims age range between eight years old and 47 years old. At
01:04 least half of our victims are under the age of 16. As mentioned yesterday, we
01:11 have subjects detained, two of which are juveniles. We are working to
01:16 determine the involvement of others, and it should be noted we have recovered
01:20 several firearms. We have a plan for ST Patrick's Day parade in Kansas City. We
01:24 have parades all the time. I don't think they'll end. Certainly, we
01:27 recognize the public safety challenges at issue that relate to them. This is
01:31 why we have detectives right now who are doing important work to make sure
01:34 the people who committed these offenses are brought to justice. We will learn
01:38 about the types of firearms that is used, and we'll do everything that we
01:41 can, both as a city and working with our state and federal partners to see
01:45 that we can help avoid these types of situations. You asked the chief at the
01:48 outset. Is this Kansas City? Well, we've had parades like this before. We had
01:52 one last year without this type of incident. We had a Kansas City Royals
01:55 Victory Parade where we had almost no arrests in 2015. So I don't think in
01:59 any way that this is Kansas City. I do think that there is a gun violence
02:03 challenge in this community and many others, and there certainly is a gun
02:06 violence challenges. It relates to major events. That, however, does not
02:10 mean that Kansas City will stop having major events.
