Surrey County Council leader Tim Oliver has said the new REEL Cinema at Brightwells Yard is just the start of Farnham's transformation.
Cllr Oliver spoke to the Herald during a Champagne reception to open the new cinema, joined by the great and good of Farnham on Wednesday, January 31.
Surrey County Council has invested up to £30 million in the commercial element of the Crest Nicholson-built Brightwells Yard scheme, revitalising the long-neglected eastern end of Farnham town centre.
The REEL Cinema is the first commercial unit to open in the development, with up to 24 other shops, restaurants and other businesses set to open before the development is complete.
More new arrivals are expected later this year, but Coppa Club and Nando's are currently the only traders confirmed to have signed pre-lets.
Plans have, however, been submitted for signage by Franco Manca and Pret-a-Manger in recent years, with Jetts Fitness, Charter's estate agents, a dentist and nail salon also hotly tipped to be taking units.
Cllr Oliver also indicated in a meeting with the Farnham Visitors' Forum last week that Farnham Library could be set to relocate from Vernon House in West Street to Brightwells Yard – believed to be taking on three units opposite the former Marlborough Head pub on the corner of East Street.
And alongside the Brightwells Yard scheme, Surrey County Council is also progressing plans for a major two-year overhaul of Farnham town centre's congested road network.
Road closure notices were recently posted for the phased works starting this September – but Cllr Oliver told the Herald it is still his ambition, and MP Jeremy Hunt's, that the works start earlier, this July.

00:00 Tim, could you just sort of, you know, obviously it's a tremendously exciting thing for Farnham,
00:04 this isn't it? So what are your impressions of the cinema? Oh fantastic, I mean five screens,
00:08 you know, really comfortable, lots of legroom which is so important for taller people. You know,
00:14 it's just, I mean, to see this come to fruition, you know, I think this goes back to 2008,
00:19 the original planning commission, and here we are now in 2024 with a take for it to start. You know,
00:26 Brightwell's has been a challenging scheme to deliver, both from the county council perspective
00:31 as well as from Waverley and the town council, but all three local government organisations have
00:36 come together, worked really, really well, you know, with press, you know, and we're starting
00:41 to see the units also now filling up and so on, so just, I think, just fantastic for the town.
00:47 And obviously, I mean, it's been quite a poor end of town for a long time and, you know, Surrey's
00:51 invested in this scheme to sort of really revitalise the economy at this end of town,
00:55 but I mean it's also going to benefit the county in the long run, isn't it?
00:58 Well, I think, you know, we have 27 towns across the county. They're all, you know,
01:02 they've all got different sort of personalities and so on. Barnham is a beautiful town, you know,
01:07 this is about, you know, building on that vibrancy, you know, getting the footfall in to make this a
01:13 destination town. You know, there is, of course, we need to make sure that the town doesn't get
01:19 split between the, you know, the existing part and this part, and I don't think it will. You know,
01:23 I think this will just add real value, you know, and, you know, it's a growing town,
01:28 you know, lots of new housing coming along, lots of younger families here, you know, and this,
01:32 the sort of events they're putting on in real, they're saying, you know, it's just fantastic.
01:36 I mean, caters for every single age group. Absolutely, and then just finally, obviously,
01:41 it's aligned with the changes in the town centre that we're going to see starting later this year,
01:46 hopefully, and so, I mean, this is really the beginning of a real kind of new era for the town
01:51 centre, isn't it? Well, I think so, and I hope so. I mean, I've, you know, spent the last five years,
01:56 you know, coming down here. I mean, absolutely committed to the County Council delivering its
02:01 part of this scheme, you know, has been for the engagement, you know, both across the community
02:06 and so on. So, you know, it's got to be good news. I think, you know, 20 years Farnham has said,
02:13 you know, we need some investment, we need to take out traffic from the town centre.
02:18 Yeah, it's probably not perfect, you know, but, you know, but the scheme is developed in a way
02:24 that we can build on that going forward and maybe one day, you know, if that's what residents want,
02:30 we'll have a car-free town centre. We'll see, but at least, you know, we're getting on,
02:35 making that investment, you know, and that will be for the benefit of all residents of the town.
