A 24-hour snow warning has been issued for much of England and Wales as temperatures drop as low as -10C in some parts of Scotland. A day of potentially heavy snow could lead to travel delays and power cuts, the Met Office warned on Monday.

00:00 Hello there, welcome to your weather update from the Met Office. It's Wednesday morning and it's cold outside for most.
00:05 We're seeing some Arctic air spread across the country.
00:08 There's a snow and ice warning until lunchtime across northern and western parts of Scotland associated with wintry showers.
00:13 Now towards the far south notice the air is milder,
00:17 but these weather fronts never too far away bringing with it some cloud and even some patchy rain from time to time before
00:21 more persistent rain arrives later on on Wednesday and
00:25 into Thursday morning. More about that in a moment. For the time being watch out for slippery surfaces across Scotland.
00:31 This feature here has brought a scattering of snow showers.
00:34 You could see a covering across the central belt down towards a southern parts of Scotland through the first part of the day.
00:39 One or two wintry showers can't be ruled out across Northern Ireland,
00:42 but some bright skies, some sunshine as the sun rises across northern counties of England,
00:46 hazy sunshine further south across the Midlands, Wales, East Anglia, eastern counties and some patchy frost.
00:53 But to the south of that that's where we're seeing more cloud, higher temperatures and also some patchy rain along the coast.
00:59 It is going to be rather breezy.
01:01 So a lot of weather, lots of different weather,
01:03 but most of us will be immersed in that cold air and that means temperatures will struggle through the day despite the fact we'll see
01:10 some bright weather, hazy sunshine across England and Wales, brighter skies further north and west and always the chance of
01:17 a scattering of snow showers across northern and western areas of Scotland including Orkney as well as Shetland.
01:23 Many areas though will be dry although some showery bursts
01:27 towards the southwest will continue through the afternoon and that sun will just come and go through the day.
01:33 But temperatures will struggle. So across Scotland
01:37 we'll see temperatures coming in probably around three to five degrees Celsius at the very best. For Northern Ireland
01:43 it's possibly going to be a six if you're lucky. Further south seven or eight but towards the far south nine degrees Celsius.
01:50 But always more clouds and the odd spot or two of rain. Now the frosts will return quite quickly through this evening and overnight.
01:58 Extending further south across England as well as Northern Ireland, northern parts of Wales.
02:03 But the cloud will thicken across the rest of Wales, central southern England and the West Country. By midnight
02:09 we'll see the first of more persistent rain arriving into Thursday morning.
02:12 And a widespread frost to start the day towards the north again with these showers across the far north which will be wintry.
02:18 So temperatures towards the far southwest will hold around eight degrees Celsius but close to freezing if not below further north.
02:25 That means a cold start to Thursday, the risk of ice across more northern areas.
02:30 And then notice this as that rain encounters the cold air through Thursday morning
02:34 it is likely to turn to snow especially over the higher ground.
02:38 So the Welsh mountains and then eventually towards Pennine districts through the afternoon.
02:43 As this rain and some snow pushes in across Northern Ireland as well.
02:48 To the south we'll see some showers gather across Scotland. It's mostly dry, some hazy sunshine.
02:53 And again one or two showers coming in on a cold wind here.
02:57 So as we head through to Thursday evening there could be some impactful snow particularly over the high ground.
03:02 But even at lower levels obviously we'll keep you posted here.
03:05 and wherever you are away from the far south it's going to be a cold day.
