Dyche delighted after Everton comeback for point against Spurs
Transcript
00:00 I must have some analysis team, he's analysing me while I'm working, unbelievable.
00:05 Hi Sean, obviously late drama there, late goal, what did you make of your team's overall performance today?
00:18 Very pleased, I suppose from top to bottom really, the way the team took on the last couple of days' work
00:27 against a late night down at Fulham, the commitment to the cause is evident,
00:34 and some of the quality, I think they're a very good side, we know that,
00:37 they started well and scored a very good goal, we can always pick the bones out of managers and coaches like we do,
00:43 but from their point of view a very good goal, and then that kind of, I don't know, sometimes it gives you a kick start,
00:49 because we seemed to grip the game then, went on the front foot, took the game on with a lot more intent really,
00:55 rather than sussing out what was going on, I thought we went on the front foot and played very well,
00:59 and you come in at half time and it just reminded the players, I said look that's a really good half,
01:04 so we've got to keep believing in that and keep going into the second half,
01:08 because sometimes the biggest challenge is you accept a good half and think we're doing alright,
01:12 and that gets you nothing, so I said the second half has got to be the same,
01:15 and I thought it was, I thought we kept our levels really high,
01:18 I certainly felt we deserved at least an equaliser, if not to take all three,
01:22 but I thought we did down at their place and we got nothing, so that's sometimes football.
01:26 You mentioned there you only had a couple of days for the players to take on what you wanted,
01:32 I guess one of those game plans was to target the goalkeeper on crosses?
01:35 No, not necessarily, I've just been asked that previously, we want to be competitive on set pieces all over the pitch,
01:42 it's not about that, the way that we work, the staff mainly by the way, I must give them credit,
01:46 because they spend a lot of time, the staff and the analyst team, to make the best chances we can from set pieces,
01:52 but it's delivery that's massively important quite obviously, and the intent and desire to go and score a goal,
01:58 that's a large part of what we keep drumming into the players, and I think it's evident,
02:02 I think there is an intent and desire to score a goal, and we do look a threat, everyone knows that,
02:06 and rightly so, but no there's not really that, there's no story there, it's just about the way that we work,
02:13 we don't always look at the opposition, we're aware of it of course, but the point is in some ways you maybe give it more time on the opposition,
02:20 but mostly it's about what we do, and focusing on what we do, and being a threat, and I think we are a threat, that's for sure.
02:25 And finally, Goodison was obviously bouncing at the end, how important are moments like that when you're trying to stay in the division?
02:31 Well you never know until the end of the season, but I think they've seen a team, we took maximum crowd like we do,
02:36 which is amazing, I think everywhere in the country, down to Fulham, I thought they saw a side there,
02:41 stretched a little bit, but given everything, we had three big chances in the last three minutes of that game to win it,
02:46 so they're seeing it, so I go to the last breath of a game, which is a big thing with me and the players, which I talk about,
02:52 and it was on show again today, I thought we were knocking on the door constantly,
02:56 and then we get our rewards with a very good set-piece delivery and a good finish from Gerrard,
03:01 and you know I argue, I mean you debate it, end of the day I'm sure, but penalties, we can't get a penalty, I thought there's one I'm better,
03:08 and then I get booked for a poor decision, that's the third time this season, I don't know what that's all about,
03:14 I get booked for a poor decision, everyone in the crowd, everyone in football knows it's a poor decision,
03:19 and I get booked for it, but anyways, at least they're my words.
03:22 Sean, it would have been so easy for the Heads to drop off that early goal, but they didn't, Everton responded really well,
03:29 what do you think it says about your side that they were able to do that and find that way to build momentum
03:33 and eventually get their way back into the game?
03:35 Well it's something that we've been talking to the players in depth about from the first moment I got here,
03:41 because the underbelly of a successful side in my opinion is not just quality, it's about the connectivity of a side,
03:47 it's about the belief, it's about the work ethic of a side, and the respect and the honesty and the pride in what you do,
03:52 and I think it's becoming more and more evident with this group, I mean there's players out there today,
03:57 Ganna's just got back, he's been travelling, he has one day's train, I thought he was excellent,
04:00 Young is coming back from injury, we're having to be careful, I thought he was excellent, Seamus gets on for 20 minutes,
04:05 Ben Godfrey, done very well again, so many good sides of players committed to the cause,
04:11 and I think sometimes that gets overlooked, we stretch the limit, but the players are not thinking that,
04:16 I'm certainly not thinking that, it's just a fact, but I'm not speaking to the players about that,
04:20 I'm going lads, this is a side that I believe can win and you should believe in each other,
04:23 and I thought that was on show today again, because I thought it was at Fulham,
04:26 and they're a good side, they're a really good side as well.
04:29 You talk about being stretched the limit, if you look back at this week, obviously,
04:32 such few options, being so depleted, two really good results against good teams,
04:38 given the adverse circumstances you're operating in, you must look back on this week and feel very pleased with the work you've done.
04:43 Yeah, and I think the players deserve a lot of credit, it's another three game week,
04:47 it's a big question over their physicality, and like I said, the risk and reward of keeping players out there,
04:54 bringing them off, trying to use the squad the best we can, and you've got to win games,
05:00 so we're hopeful that bodies will start coming back fit, if not this week, certainly over the next couple of weeks,
05:06 and obviously we've got the delay after the Man City game, so that gives us a few extra days,
05:10 so we're hopeful the squad starts coming back together.
05:13 It is what it is though, it's one of them things, and the mentality of the players has been really firm,
05:19 and really solid, and I thought a very, very good show of that today.
05:22 Just a check, sorry, not sure how to check, but is that free yellow cards for you now this evening?
05:26 Yeah, I don't know, can they rescind the yellow cards? Surely they can't bring it away,
05:30 because when they look at that, surely they're going to go 'that's a bad decision',
05:33 but it's that thing, isn't it, like passionate managers running down the line and that, sliding on their knees,
05:38 but you're not allowed to show passion when it's a bad decision, because you get booked, what's that all about?
05:42 I don't know, I get confused with all these modern life things, at the end of the day it's a poor decision,
05:47 I reacted and I get booked for it, sometimes you've just got to go, you can't book him for that,
05:51 surely there's a bit of common sense, you go 'alright, we're not going to get involved now,
05:54 but you can't book him for that', but anyway, there lies the reality.
05:59 Is that character that's been shown by your side this season,
06:04 is that something you're hoping that's going to carry you through?
06:08 I think the character's been there for a long time, I don't think it's about this season,
06:11 I think we've been working endlessly from when we got it, I think the players have played their part,
06:15 trust me it takes a lot of character to win that last game of the season, that takes a lot of character,
06:19 especially when you've got injuries all over the place and you're changing the squad,
06:22 you're playing a right midfielder and a left winger at wing-back, that takes a lot of character,
06:27 so the character's been there, when we add quality and connectivity of the group and how we play
06:32 and then you add that and the fans and what they're like, then it just becomes a more powerful version of it,
06:37 but I've never questioned the character, we've built it as a group,
06:40 the players have taken ownership of it, they continue to do so, and it paid us back today,
06:45 because there was also some quality by the way, and the demand and the tactics,
06:49 but equally there has to be the right character in the side,
06:51 and I think it was on show and I think it has been virtually all season, we've had a couple of times it hasn't,
06:55 but generally speaking I've been very happy with the character of the side and the commitment to the cause,
07:01 and we've got to keep going of course, we've got to keep doing that.
07:04 You needed someone to stand up at the end and Jarred did that for you,
07:08 just shows that he's now impacting both ends of the picture in the media.
07:12 Yeah, I don't think it's just him, I think Taki was excellent again today,
07:16 he always looks for threat on a set piece, but Jarred if he can add goals that's always full of course,
07:22 but yeah I think his demand, I think the team demand as I've spoken about is clear and evident,
07:28 he's having a very good time of it and he's enjoying it,
07:31 and I think we want players, even in the hard yards of football,
07:34 and it is tough times and it can get awkward and everyone's looking at the leads,
07:38 we get points back and all that, sometimes you just need to remind yourself he's a young man,
07:43 he's a professional footballer, fantastic for him and he looks like a player who's enjoying the challenge.
07:48 Sean, was the plan to press Spurs high, it felt like after the opener everything got a load of joy doing that?
07:58 Yeah, we want to press and we want to play hard at the pitch,
08:02 sometimes it's a strange thing, that commitment to doing that is just like sussing things out,
08:08 and I thought for their first goal particularly we looked like nearly pressing
08:12 and that weird thing that happens when you're not quite there,
08:15 but then after that it was like the shackles came off and we went on the full-court press,
08:19 which we wanted to do of course, they do play out, they very rarely change that,
08:23 they keep at it and we nicked it that many times that you think you've got to get a reward at some point,
08:29 and we didn't quite do that, we know we've got to continue to look at how we can improve that,
08:33 because we nicked it so many times high up in the last pass or the last finish is the moment of truth,
08:38 but it is pleasing when we push these sides, especially good sides like this,
08:42 when we do push them, we did it ever so well against Man City,
08:45 I think that was their third highest turnover in the top third of the pitch,
08:48 that's tremendous against sides like that,
08:50 so that mentality is an important part of the team tactically understanding and delivering.
08:55 How pleased were you with the impact of the substitute, Lewis Darbin and others?
09:00 Yes, very pleased, we mentioned before the game that everyone makes a difference,
09:05 not just the starting XI, everyone's ready to make a difference,
09:08 and I thought they did, I thought everyone who got on the pitch today,
09:10 everyone who played their part, and yet again it's an important factor,
09:13 a substitute's coming on a bit disgruntled, a bit fed up, you want to come in on activating into the game,
09:18 and I thought that was a very good sign again.
09:21 Can I just check on Danji Muzindji, how long do you expect him to be out for?
09:24 Yeah, he's certainly very, very doubtful for next weekend,
09:27 it needs settling down, so we'll wait and see as the time goes on,
09:30 but it won't happen for next weekend, I'm pretty clear on that.
09:35 You said ankle?
09:37 Yeah, ankle, yeah.
09:38 Thank you.
09:39 Can we check on Ben Godfrey, if that's all right, did he come off with a little niggle?
09:49 Oh, no, no, cramp, because he obviously hasn't played that much football,
09:53 probably a massive shift the other night, got cramp,
09:57 but the kind, I'm not a medic, but when your calf just balls up and it won't release,
10:03 so we had to make a decision there and then.
10:05 That performance from Garnet getting in the middle, coming back,
10:08 I think he travelled back to Senegal first, didn't he, and then to come back?
10:11 Yeah, he's had a lot of travelling, and as I said, I thought he did very, very well.
10:15 Younging I thought was excellent today, so many good signs from the group,
10:19 and just taking it on, I think that is the key.
10:22 I don't think, I'd like to think I don't make excuses,
10:25 I don't ask the players and say, "Look, this is what it is, that's the reality,
10:28 when you put the shirt on, when the whistle blows, crack on, no noise about it,
10:33 we'll just get on with what we do."
10:34 And I thought he was a very clear sign of that today, because I thought he was excellent.
10:37 OK, thanks, Fox.
10:39 Thanks, everyone. Cheers.
