00:00 (upbeat music)
00:02 - Welcome to Style Solutions.
00:09 I'm Marina Lischt,
00:10 I'm the Associate Editor of nationalworld.com.
00:13 And as ever, I'm joined by Lifestyle Reporter,
00:16 Natalie Dixon.
00:17 Welcome, Natalie.
00:18 So today, I'm really looking forward
00:21 to talking about this.
00:24 We're talking about wardrobes inspired
00:28 by not celebrities, sort of celebrities themselves so much,
00:33 but we're looking at sort of wardrobes inspired
00:37 by TV series over the years.
00:40 And we're gonna start,
00:42 and this is just music to my ears,
00:45 and I could talk about it morning, noon, and night,
00:48 but I know time is the essence.
00:50 So Marina, you better get on with it.
00:52 I'm talking to myself now.
00:53 Let's begin with sex and the city.
00:57 Oh my God, was I obsessed with this series?
01:01 Not only was I obsessed with it,
01:03 but I was obsessed with all the characters,
01:06 but particularly Sarah Jessica Parker's character,
01:09 Carrie Bradshaw, and her wardrobe.
01:11 There are so many outfits that I was obsessed with.
01:16 I'm thinking her sort of green tutu skirt.
01:21 And yes, I did go out and get a similar green tutu skirt.
01:25 In fact, I got two tutu skirts.
01:27 I got a green tutu skirt, Natalie,
01:29 you'd be interested in knowing,
01:30 and a black and white polka dot skirt.
01:33 So everyone said, oh, her fashion was a bit mad.
01:38 It was crazy, but it was eclectic.
01:41 Some of it worked, some of it didn't,
01:43 but I was definitely inspired by it.
01:45 And Natalie, what are your thoughts on sex and the city,
01:49 and maybe specifically Carrie Bradshaw's wardrobe,
01:53 but I'm happy to hear your thoughts
01:54 on all of the characters?
01:56 - Yeah, so sex and the city,
02:00 even after all these years,
02:01 I could just rewatch it just to see all of the outfits.
02:04 And I love that even so many years later that you can,
02:09 okay, some of them you wouldn't necessarily
02:11 walk down the street wearing them
02:13 because they're so out there,
02:15 but there are sort of, you know,
02:17 some of the slick dresses,
02:19 some of the tailored outfits that Samantha Jones wears.
02:23 You know, you can still sort of wear them day to day.
02:26 And I think probably the standout outfit
02:30 that I absolutely love is just,
02:33 it's such a cliche, but it is Carrie Bradshaw
02:36 in the pink tutu and the little pink top
02:39 in the sort of credits,
02:41 in the opening scenes of that series.
02:44 And I think it recently went for
02:47 lots and lots of money at auction,
02:49 but I know that it was originally bought
02:52 and found in like a $1 bargain bin sort of shop.
02:56 And I just love the fact that it's so iconic.
03:00 It's so beautiful.
03:01 And it definitely inspires me to wear tutus,
03:06 but I don't think I could quite get away with it.
03:09 I think there'd be a few, yeah,
03:11 heads turning for the wrong reasons.
03:13 But yeah, I loved Carrie Bradshaw,
03:16 all of the sort of like dresses and outfits
03:19 that Samantha Jones wears,
03:22 just 'cause they were, you know,
03:24 obviously they were all such different personalities.
03:27 You know, you have like the bit out there
03:30 for Samantha Jones, she's quite well known for.
03:33 Charlotte, obviously the cute sort of like two pieces.
03:37 I think they just, they all worked beautifully.
03:40 And I do think that, you know, it's still standout now.
03:43 - So the woman behind sort of talking
03:48 about this vintage find,
03:49 the woman behind the series in terms of the costumes
03:54 is somebody called Patricia Field,
03:56 who might be familiar to some of you and perhaps not.
03:59 So she's the creative genius
04:02 behind the original "Sex and the City" outfits
04:06 and, you know, made Carrie Bradshaw,
04:08 Sarah Jessica Parker's character, Carrie Bradshaw,
04:12 the sort of the fashion icon that the character became.
04:16 And so just moving on from "Sex and the City,"
04:19 Patricia Field went on to another series
04:22 that I'm sure all of you will be familiar with,
04:26 starring Lily Collins, Emily in Paris.
04:29 So you might've spotted,
04:32 if you were an original fan of "Sex and the City,"
04:34 there are slight similarities
04:36 between some of the character Emily's outfits
04:39 and Carrie Bradshaw.
04:41 But I think it's, again,
04:43 for those of you who never watched "Sex and the City,"
04:45 new to Emily in Paris,
04:47 it's created a whole sort of new legion of fans
04:50 who are obsessing over the character Emily's wardrobe.
04:54 Are you a fan of Emily in Paris?
04:55 And more specifically, Natalie,
04:57 are you a fan of Lily Collins' character Emily's wardrobe?
05:00 Which is, I would say, quite out there.
05:04 - Yeah, definitely.
05:06 I think when Emily in Paris came out,
05:10 I think it was just in 2020,
05:11 it was exactly what everybody needed at that time.
05:14 It was fashion, Paris, a bit of drama, a bit of scandal.
05:18 And I just absolutely,
05:19 I think she's brilliant for the part.
05:21 Fashion-wise, I think in season one,
05:25 she wears some beautiful outfits.
05:27 In particular, I think there's,
05:29 I think it might even be episode one,
05:31 where she wears a really strapless black dress.
05:34 And again, it's almost a bit tutu-y.
05:37 I just think she looks really classy, really beautiful.
05:40 Throughout the series, obviously,
05:42 there's a lot of check, tartan, brightly colors.
05:45 But I think in series two,
05:48 the other characters, Camille,
05:49 her fashion really stood out.
05:52 And I think that,
05:54 I can't remember her character,
05:56 but Ashley Park, who plays the third one in Emily in Paris,
06:00 I think they all, again, have very different styles.
06:04 But yeah, I love it.
06:06 I think Patricia feels amazing.
06:08 And she's obviously very good at what she does,
06:10 because if, you know,
06:12 you just want to watch it to see what they wear.
06:15 - No, 100%.
06:17 And I'd have just let you in on a little secret.
06:20 I have met Patricia Field,
06:22 but it's not really a secret,
06:23 'cause I've just revealed it on Style Solutions.
06:26 But I have met Patricia Field in a pop-up boutique
06:29 in the States, where I just literally had to go to.
06:34 I think I was even waiting outside.
06:36 And when I saw her, it was like,
06:38 I had to obviously try and keep it cool.
06:40 But it was like meeting almost an A-list celebrity for me,
06:44 because I feel like I've known her
06:46 and her work for so many years.
06:48 So I was definitely sort of like a fangirl
06:50 with Patricia Field.
06:51 It was a very exciting moment for me.
06:54 But sort of moving on from sort of "Sex and the City"
06:57 and "Emily in Paris,"
06:58 and just talking about sort of TV series in the UK,
07:03 something that really sort of grabbed me,
07:05 and I was sort of transfixed by her wardrobe,
07:09 was "The Serious Anatomy of a Scandal" and Sienna Miller.
07:14 And I know it dealt with some really serious storylines,
07:19 and I was 100% transfixed by the storylines.
07:23 But let's be honest with you,
07:24 her wardrobe was on another level.
07:28 I just was sort of mesmerized by sort of her camel coats,
07:33 sort of her brown sort of jumpers,
07:37 which brown is always sort of a word
07:39 that never sounds great when you describe it,
07:42 maybe sort of chocolate brown camel shades.
07:45 But I thought she looked incredible,
07:47 as in I wanted all of her wardrobe.
07:50 Not only did I want all of her wardrobe,
07:52 but I wanted her kitchen too.
07:55 And it wasn't, and I was so obsessed with her kitchen.
07:58 Of course, I Googled,
07:59 "Where was Sienna Miller's house in 'Anatomy of a Scandal'?"
08:02 It wasn't a real house, they built the whole set,
08:05 but wow, did they build a fantastic kitchen,
08:07 and her wardrobe is something else.
08:09 So I don't know what you think of the character's wardrobe
08:14 in "Anatomy of a Scandal," Nathalie.
08:16 - So as you know, I haven't watched the series yet.
08:19 It is on my list,
08:20 and I'm planning on watching it this weekend.
08:23 As for Sienna Miller's just day-to-day style,
08:26 I do really love it.
08:27 I love what she wears.
08:28 I think she's very sort of the quiet luxury sort of style.
08:32 But yeah, it is definitely on my list,
08:35 and I'm looking forward to watching it.
08:37 And I can't wait to see her kitchen,
08:39 'cause I'm obsessed with looking at people's houses
08:41 at the minute.
08:41 If it's not fashion, it's houses.
08:44 So I'm looking forward to that one.
08:47 - Right, so now we have to sort of,
08:49 we have to talk about,
08:50 so moving on from Sienna Miller,
08:51 we have to talk about the series that has gripped everyone.
08:55 And I will admit, I didn't watch it,
08:58 but I do know a lot about her wardrobe,
09:01 because everyone keeps messaging me,
09:03 "Have you seen what Claudia Winkerman's wearing?
09:05 Did you see what she wore on "Traitors" last night?"
09:08 Yes, I did see what she wore on "Traitors,"
09:10 and it's literally, that's all I've been reading about.
09:13 Claudia Winkerman, Claudia Winkerman's fringe,
09:16 Claudia Winkerman's wardrobe on "The Traitors,"
09:18 which I thought was brilliantly sort of done,
09:22 particularly as we're in winter at the moment,
09:25 sort of the green knit jumper.
09:28 I did think some of her coats were phenomenal.
09:31 There was sort of like a tartan skirt,
09:34 these sort of leggings, the little blazers.
09:39 It was sort of like, yes, I do want it.
09:42 I do want to have a similar look.
09:44 And Natalie, I think I'm correct in saying
09:46 you might've been inspired by Claudia Winkerman
09:49 in "Traitors" today.
09:50 Am I correct in that?
09:51 - Yes, definitely.
09:53 Definitely taking some inspo
09:54 with the sort of the chunky knit sweater
09:56 and the tweed blazer jacket.
09:59 Again, I kind of,
10:00 it surprised me a little bit with Claudia Winkerman
10:04 because she's kind of been on TV for so many years now.
10:08 And she's obviously, you think Claudia Winkerman,
10:10 you think fringe, dark hair, like that's just kind of-
10:13 - Fringe, fringe, fringe, I have a fringe too.
10:16 - Or taken inspiration from her as well.
10:18 Who did it first?
10:19 - No, I haven't.
10:19 No, I haven't.
10:20 (laughing)
10:21 No.
10:22 - But yeah, I think-
10:23 - It came back in the 1960s, not Claudia Winkerman.
10:26 Sorry, you don't know.
10:27 - Yeah.
10:28 - But I like that, that's a bit better.
10:31 But I just think it's quite funny
10:32 that now that she's kind of become, to many people,
10:35 this sort of new style icon.
10:37 I think I've always quite liked her sort of,
10:41 she's sometimes a little bit too quirky for me,
10:44 but I love the fact that she's quite,
10:45 she loves her fake tan, which some people now like,
10:49 you know, they can look orange
10:50 and they'll deny that they wear any of it.
10:52 I love the fake tan.
10:53 It's the only way that I'll look like I've got color in me.
10:56 You know, the fact that she's like, dark hair,
10:59 a little bit goth looking with the sort of heavy eyeliner.
11:03 She's just kind of very true to herself.
11:05 But yeah, I like now that she's almost got this sort of
11:09 tweedy, tartany, country sort of edge to her.
11:15 And then yeah, still her little bit of
11:18 quirkiness here and there.
11:20 But yeah, I think it's great.
11:21 I love Claudia Winkleman.
11:23 I never thought that I'd take style inspiration from her,
11:25 but here we are.
11:26 - No, it's true.
11:29 I think, as I said at the beginning of "Star Solutions,"
11:33 I think people have been obsessing about sort of
11:36 TV characters' wardrobes for many years,
11:38 but it suddenly seems to have sort of captivated the nation.
11:42 And I think a lot of people now are tuning in,
11:45 not necessarily because they,
11:47 well, they do love the show,
11:48 but they love the wardrobes of the characters
11:51 and the presenters.
11:52 So I think it's becoming sort of a twofold thing.
11:56 They want to watch the show,
11:57 but they want to see what they're wearing.
11:59 But yeah, it's fascinating.
12:01 Yes, thanks for joining us, Natalie,
12:03 and all of you on "Star Solutions" today.
12:07 And I look forward to catching up with you again,
12:09 Natalie, next week.
12:11 - Thank you.
