Western Australia continues to swelter through heatwave

Much of WA is continuing to swelter through a heatwave with temperatures in some areas soaring over 40 degrees. This is Perth's second hot spell since 2024 started, and it usually has only two severe heatwaves each calendar year.

00:00 It's another hot day in Perth and these kids from Mekathara commandeered park sprinklers

00:06 to get some relief. But for others, midday is the best time for exercise, even when it's

00:11 pushing 40 degrees.

00:13 I love fitness and there's no better time of the day to do it. Condition the body to

00:17 the heat, just keep your socks up, keep your water up.

00:20 I don't know why people aren't out here doing this. This is it.

00:24 Memphis the white rhino won't be running up Jacob's ladder. He prefers wallowing in the

00:27 mud at Perth Zoo to stay cool and be protected from the sun. While an otter keeps the body

00:33 temp down with fishy ice blocks. The airport was, as usual, one of the warmest places,

00:39 but for some it's a nice change.

00:44 About mid 40s. Pretty standard.

00:49 On days like today, it's important to stay hydrated and to stay cool. One of the best

00:54 places to do that is here, Elizabeth Quay's water park. But the bad news for those not

00:59 used to plus 40 temperatures, there may be more to come.

01:03 Summer is certainly not over. We have got another month of summer left and that means

01:07 we are going to continue seeing that typical or classic summer pattern where we see a slow

01:13 moving West Coast draft and a high pressure system to the south of us. And what that means

01:18 is we'll continue to see hot dry days over the next few weeks.
