00:00 Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeo has defended the government's decision to award

00:07 5 million ringgit to the Football Association of Malaysia following the national team's

00:13 exit from the Asian Cup.

00:15 She said for the first time in 42 years, Malaysia qualified for the Asian Cup on merit and were

00:21 the lowest-ranked team in their group.

00:24 The minister added that the national team would require funding to meet their target

00:28 of continued qualification for the Asian Cup.

00:32 Hannah pointed to the expense of flying the team to away matches, adding that the 5 million

00:37 ringgit allocation will assist with this expense.

00:41 She said the finance ministry placed restrictions on the sum, stating that it may only be used

00:46 for operational expenses, not administration or emolument payments.

00:52 She added that football is a multi-billion-dollar global sport with a huge following in Malaysia,

00:57 so the government wants to assist as much as it can.
