00:09 defied everything we thought we knew about him based on Sheldon's anecdotes in The Big Bang

00:22 "Aye, Captain."
00:27 Number 10. Sheldon Shows Appreciation.
00:30 Based on what Sheldon shared about his dad in The Big Bang Theory, it seemed like they
00:35 rarely clicked, and George Sr. didn't seem to care much about what mattered to him.
00:40 "My father loved football. He always made me watch it before I was allowed to do my homework."
00:44 However, this episode paints a different picture. Dr. Sturgis joins the family for dinner,
00:50 and the conversation shifts to potential black hole outcomes, engaging the whole family in
00:56 entertaining, devastating, and hilarious alternate realities. Towards the end of the episode,
01:02 adult Sheldon reflects on what he wished he'd said to his dad.
01:05 "There's a lot of things I wish I had said to my dad while he was around.
01:08 That I appreciated him. That I loved him.
01:13 Which is why I'm grateful for the times I did tell him how I felt."
01:19 In his own way, young Sheldon lets his dad know that the evening meant a lot to him.
01:24 George's response and the smile they share leave us with a warm feeling.
01:28 "Dr. Sturgis was here. Everybody talked about science. It was nice."

01:37 Number 9. Looking out for Georgie
01:42 The relationship between George and Georgie hasn't always been the best. However, it's clear that
01:48 George Sr. genuinely wants what's best for his son, and hopes to see him fulfill his potential,
01:54 even if his methods can be tough at times.
01:56 "You know I'm not loving your attitude lately.
01:58 I think it's great that you got this job and you're doing so well at it.
02:02 I'm proud of you."
02:06 Going back to the pilot, Georgie voices his annoyance at starting high school
02:10 alongside his nine-year-old brother.
02:12 "Georgie, freshman year, that's a big deal."
02:15 "How can I be excited when he's gonna be in the same grade as me?"
02:18 "Don't worry Georgie, I'm not planning on being in the ninth grade for very long."
02:22 While Mary coddles Sheldon before his first day,
02:25 George takes some unconventional steps to ease Georgie's embarrassment.
02:30 From Sheldon's perspective, we can see how this might align with the George he
02:34 often gripes about in adulthood.
02:36 "The boy is nine years old and going into high school. Isn't that weird enough?"
02:40 "Give it to me."
02:41 "Come on, it's not just Sheldon. Georgie's gonna be in class with him."
02:45 However, we see it as a dad making sure one child's needs don't overshadow the others.
02:52 Number 8. Helping Missy when Aunt Flo first calls.
02:55 Even though this is something about 1.8 billion people experience monthly,
03:00 many are conditioned to feel embarrassed about it.
03:02 "Should we go home?"
03:03 "I'm pitching in an hour."
03:05 "You think that's a good idea? Maybe you need to lie down."
03:08 "I don't need to lie down."
03:09 "Okay, well maybe I need to lie down."
03:11 And if you've been in Missy's shoes, who's perhaps the last person you wanted with you
03:16 in that moment? George's initial panic is kind of hilarious and hardly surprising,
03:21 given the society he was likely raised in.
03:23 "Nothing to be embarrassed about. It's perfectly natural. Perfectly normal."
03:26 "Dad, I know."
03:28 "I'm telling myself."
03:29 Still, he steps up in Missy's time of need and tries his absolute best. Luckily,
03:34 the cashier realizes he's out of his depth and takes over. Still, you have to appreciate his
03:40 efforts. Some other dads would have crumbled under their own discomfort. We also love how
03:45 George's love for his daughter only grows after this experience.
03:49 "There you go! That's how you do it!"
03:52 "Is that your little girl?"
03:54 "That's my little lady."
03:56 Number 7. Teaching his kids valuable life lessons.
04:00 Throughout The Big Bang Theory, both Sheldon and his mother have made some jabs at George
04:05 Sr.'s intelligence, but he's no slouch when it comes to dishing out wisdom.
04:09 "Sounds like a wise man."
04:11 "Oh, not so wise. He once tried to find a bobcat for some licorice."
04:15 He's always pushing Georgie to level up and be more responsible. He's also taught Sheldon
04:20 the importance of honoring commitments, even when things don't go as planned. Then there's the time
04:25 he took on the Herculean challenge of attempting to teach Sheldon the fine art of not blurting out
04:31 every thought.
04:32 "Dad."
04:32 "Instead of losing patience, act interested and ask a follow-up question."
04:37 "Your father's a mechanic. Interesting. You know what else is interesting? Quantum mechanics."
04:44 Spoiler, Sheldon's filter is a work in progress, but props to George Sr. for trying. Also,
04:50 applause is deserved for his valiant attempts at convincing Sheldon that winning isn't everything.
04:56 Trust us, that's a battle even superheroes would find daunting.
04:59 "Believe me, I was furious. But I sucked it up,
05:03 and I walked across that field and I shook their hands."
05:06 "I didn't hear a word you said."
05:11 Number six - cheering Sheldon up when their trip gets rained out.
05:15 Hey, Sheldon Lee Cooper, we have a bone to pick with you. In the Big Bang Theory episode,
05:20 "The Explosion Implosion," Sheldon claims his dad never built model rockets with him.
05:25 "I always wanted my dad to build rockets with me, but he wasn't interested."
05:28 What he conveniently forgets to mention is how his father drove him to the Space Center
05:32 when NASA didn't reply to his calculations for VTVL technology.
05:37 "We're going to Houston."
05:40 "Really?"
05:40 "Yeah, you and me are gonna give those space monkeys a little talking to."
05:45 How about the time George took his sons on a boys weekend to witness a space shuttle launch?
05:50 Sure, rain pours on their parade, but sensing Sheldon's disappointment,
05:54 George knows exactly how to shift the mood.
05:57 "Would you explain it to me?"
05:58 "When positive and negative charges grow large enough, a giant spark occurs in the cloud."
06:04 "That's pretty cool. What causes the thunder?"
06:08 This doesn't sound like the disinterested dad Sheldon describes.
06:11 We're glad Sheldon eventually realizes how much his father cared.
06:15 "I didn't realize until years later that my father was only asking questions about
06:21 lightning and thunder to cheer me up. In fact, he would often pretend to be dumb,
06:26 just to make me feel better."
06:28 Number 5. Supporting his wife in difficult moments.
06:31 Adult Sheldon's recollection of his parents' marriage isn't exactly a fairy tale,
06:36 and to a large extent, that seems accurate.
06:39 "You're honestly happy with how your life turned out. You have no regrets."
06:42 "That giant mistake gave us our children, who I love very much."
06:46 "What about your husband?"
06:47 "Oh, I love him just fine."
06:48 "Oh nice, put that on a Hallmark card."
06:50 The Coopers tied the knot more due to societal pressures than personal desire,
06:54 but it doesn't mean there's no love there.
06:56 For instance, George encourages Mary when she's offered a job at the church.

07:01 "Yeah, if it turns out Sheldon and Missy can't look out for themselves for a couple
07:05 hours after school, then, well, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it."

07:11 "Yeah."
07:11 He also steps up to support his growing family when Mary learns she's pregnant,
07:16 and later comforts her when she miscarries. He also defends his family when the community
07:21 and church turn their backs after learning about Georgie's impending arrival.
07:26 "Y'all talk a big game about community and then,
07:28 you know, turn your back when things get a little messy."
07:30 "Okay, let's just take a breath."
07:32 "You do that. We're leaving. Come on, Mary."
07:35 "George, let's talk this through."
07:36 "I've heard enough. I'll be in the truck."
07:39 We're not handing him a halo or anything, but Sheldon and Mary could have tossed
07:43 George a bit of long overdue credit now and then.
07:45 Number four, bonding with Missy over baseball.
07:49 In season three, Missy throws George a curveball with her sudden interest in baseball.
07:54 In a sweet father-daughter bonding moment, he teaches her how to play catch,
07:58 but he quickly catches on that there's more to Missy's interest than meets the eye.
08:02 "And what's something I could say about the Rangers? You know, to sound cool?"
08:06 "Is this about a boy?"
08:08 "No!"
08:09 "All right, sorry."
08:10 However, when she strikes out with her crush, George steps up to the plate again,

08:24 In Big Bang, Sheldon notes that Missy once bought George a "world's greatest dad mug."
08:30 These moments showcase that he's worthy of that title.
08:33 Not only does he teach Missy to throw a curveball,
08:36 but he proudly becomes her number one fan when she decides to pursue her passion.

08:46 Number three, daddy-daughter dates.
08:48 Missy may sometimes feel overlooked in her family, making her moments with her dad extra special.

09:05 Their first daddy-daughter date in season one takes them to the fanciest restaurant in Texas,

09:49 Although we imagine he would soon regret letting her get behind the wheel.
09:55 Number two, he's made personal sacrifices for his family.
09:59 It's no secret that George Sr. isn't thrilled with his life.
10:02 His job often leaves him feeling unfulfilled and frustrated.
10:06 But hey, he's got a family to provide for.
10:09 "I believe they're willing to exceed your current salary by a substantial amount."
10:15 "Is that so?"
10:17 "Yes. They thought it would incentivize you."
10:20 "Well, John, they're not wrong."
10:23 Often underappreciated, he quietly prioritizes his loved ones,
10:27 even at a personal cost. At one point, he turns down a coaching position at a
10:31 prestigious school in Oklahoma to avoid uprooting his family and disturbing their stability.

10:39 "Because you're afraid of mom?"
10:40 "Because I don't want to live in Oklahoma."

10:44 "What difference does it make, Mayor? We're not moving."
10:48 Though his sacrifices aren't always acknowledged,
10:50 they underline his commitment to his loved ones.
10:53 We're not excusing all his behaviors, but this adds some much-needed depth to his character.
10:58 This context paints a far more nuanced individual than the one Sheldon describes in 'The Big Bang Theory.'

11:09 Did I want to spend my evening getting yelled at by my daughter and my son and my wife?"

11:23 We doubt the George Sr. Sheldon described in 'The Big Bang Theory' would have stayed up worrying.

11:39 George and Georgie's heart-to-heart.
11:41 Father and son share various bonding chats, but this one pretty much sums up parenthood.

12:31 He drives to Dallas in the middle of the night when he sees how much his family misses Sheldon.

13:34 interests, but he sure knows enough about Star Trek to calm Sheldon's nerves about flying.

13:40 "No, but I've seen you pretend to be him."
13:44 "No. Can you do that right now? You be Spock, I'll be Kirk."
13:49 It shows how much George does care for his son and understands him more than he's given credit for.

13:57 Captain and Mr. Spock don't hold hands."

14:06 He also helps Sheldon realize that it's not totally illogical for Mr. Spock and
