00:00
Hello there. We're expecting some very unsettled weather over the next 24 hours or so. So unsettled
00:07
in fact we have named Storm Gerrit. We're expecting this area of low pressure to move
00:13
in over the next 24 hours. At the moment a brief ridge of high pressure but it won't
00:18
be around for long before then weather systems move in through Boxing Day evening overnight
00:23
into Wednesday. Strong winds across the country, gusts of 40 to 50 miles an hour locally, 60,
00:30
70 around the coast, even inland particularly across the north and the west of the UK. Heavy
00:35
rain, some hill snow as well leading to some blizzards with those strong winds across Scotland.
00:41
So across the north and east of the UK initially this evening fairly dry but outbreaks of rain
00:46
quickly sweeps in as the storm system moves in. Some heavy rain developing, strong winds.
00:52
We could see gusts of 40 to 50 miles an hour around the coast through the Irish Sea for
00:56
example. We could see gusts of 60 to 70 miles an hour over the next 24 hours or so. Heavy
01:01
rain associated with this storm system as well particularly across Northern Ireland
01:06
during the early hours. We could see some localised flooding as we start Wednesday morning.
01:12
But a wet unsettled start across the whole of the UK through Wednesday morning. So if
01:18
you are travelling through Wednesday do take extra care whilst travelling as there will
01:22
be buffeting winds across the country 40, 50 miles an hour and locally around the coast.
01:28
We could see gusts of 60, 70 miles an hour and then those strong winds also transferring
01:33
across Scotland. Outbreaks of showery rain following the rain, heavy across Scotland,
01:38
thick snow across the higher ground here. We could see 10, 20 centimetres of snow combined
01:43
with some very strong south easterly winds gusting 60, 70 miles an hour. We could see
01:48
some disruption blizzards developing here. Strong southwesterly winds means it will be
01:53
mild across England and Wales but unsettled for most. Heavy showers following, some bright
02:00
skies for Northern Ireland for a time. However, the centre of Gerrit starts to move in as
02:05
we move through the evening time. We see some very squally showers moving in, gusts of 60,
02:09
70 miles an hour for a time across parts of Wales and then this all transfers its way
02:13
eastwards through the day. Throughout Wednesday and into the early hours of Thursday we do
02:19
have Met Office warnings across the country. So do stay tuned to the forecast over the
02:24
coming days as the system continues to move through. So taking a quick look at Thursday,
02:30
blustery showers continue across much of the country. Some of these will be heavy at times
02:35
in between, some sunnier spells staying on the windy side but not as windy compared to
02:41
Wednesday. So disruption is still possible as we move through into Thursday as Gerrit
02:46
slowly starts to ease. In terms of temperatures, feeling a little cooler across the north of
02:52
the UK, temperatures still above average across southern counties. So over the next 24 hours
02:59
there is very unsettled weather to come. Some very strong winds, heavy rain, snow across
03:05
the higher ground, particularly across Scotland, perhaps even northern parts of the Pennines
03:09
for a time. Met Office warnings across the UK. So do stay tuned to the forecast and do
03:15
take care if you are travelling. See you again soon.
