00:02 - Please welcome to the stage, Miles Teller.
00:06 (audience cheers)
00:09 - I was also a second chair alto sax
00:18 in my high school jazz band.
00:20 (audience cheers)
00:22 That also gets overlooked.
00:23 Everyone wants to play alto,
00:24 but I think tenor has a better sound.
00:26 I would've went and played that.
00:29 Yeah, hey buddy.
00:30 - Hey buddy.
00:31 - How cool is this?
00:33 - This is pretty epic.
00:34 - Overdue in my opinion.
00:35 (audience cheers)
00:38 You know you're on Hollywood Boulevard
00:39 when there's sirens kinda making its way
00:42 into all the speeches here.
00:43 But yeah, it really is an honor for me to be here
00:46 to help induct you.
00:48 When you asked me to do it, I was,
00:50 yeah, that was a very proud moment for me as well.
00:53 So, you are my friend and running mate.
00:57 You are the man, the myth, the legend that is
01:00 Zac Efron, baby.
01:01 And Zac, he is more than deserving of this honor
01:07 because for my generation, our generation,
01:11 Zac was and is the first true superstar
01:15 to really come out of our class.
01:18 I first met Zac back in 2012
01:21 when we filmed That Awkward Moment.
01:23 Yeah, it didn't make a lot at the box office,
01:26 but it actually makes sense.
01:28 Written and directed by Tom Gormakin.
01:34 Now Tom, originally he just wrote the script,
01:37 but he wasn't supposed to direct it,
01:39 but Zac fought for him to get his opportunity
01:42 because he really felt,
01:44 he believed in Tom's vision for it
01:46 and that's something I think Tom has continued to do,
01:49 or Zac has continued to do throughout his career
01:52 in backing talent that he believes in.
01:56 Also, one of the producers on that was Kevin Turin,
01:59 who passed away suddenly and recently
02:01 and I just kind of wanted to give a nod to Kevin.
02:04 He was very much an ally for us on that one
02:07 and just wanted to give him a shout out.
02:09 But yeah, it was a rom-com set in New York
02:13 and it was me, Michael B. Jordan, and Zac
02:17 and we were all like 24, 25.
02:21 We had the keys to the city
02:23 and we had a lot of fun, lot of fun, lot of fun.
02:28 (audience laughing)
02:30 But I will never forget meeting Zac for the first time.
02:33 He had just finished up a rehearsal for the day
02:37 and Zac was sitting at the hotel bar
02:39 and I'd never met Zac, you know,
02:41 and so I walk over to him
02:44 and he sees me coming up and he gets up
02:48 and he comes right up to me and he says,
02:49 "Man, I'm so glad you're doing this movie.
02:53 I'm such a big fan.
02:54 I've been wanting to work with you.
02:55 You're so talented."
02:57 And it was at that moment that I realized
03:01 he was talking to Michael B. Jordan,
03:03 who was, I didn't notice,
03:06 but he was standing right behind me.
03:08 Humbling moment.
03:10 Now, even though Zac, you and I are the same age,
03:16 and at the time we were the same age playing similar parts,
03:20 our experiences up until that point
03:22 and our resumes could not have been any different.
03:27 You were a certified stud already.
03:30 You had been doing it,
03:31 I was looking through your resume, like 2002.
03:33 So I was a freshman in high school
03:35 and you were already kind of getting your chops going
03:37 and building your resume on screen.
03:39 I remember you had a production company
03:42 and I was like, "What is that?
03:44 How does a," I'm just excited to be acting.
03:48 But yeah, you had already worked with Richard Linkletter
03:50 and Lee Daniels and Raman Bharani and Gary Marshall.
03:53 He was on coffee mugs and underwear and lunchboxes
03:57 and more probably those are just the items I owned.
04:00 And I had Zac sign for me at the wrap party.
04:03 Yeah, I'm sure some people out here
04:08 probably still have like some lunchboxes.
04:11 Yeah, there you go.
04:12 I mean, yeah, we're the same age,
04:16 but honestly I can't remember a time
04:18 without knowing the name Zac Efron.
04:21 You personified and embodied what it meant
04:24 to be a movie star.
04:25 You were the guy.
04:28 And I thought about it a lot about how tough it
04:32 must have been to be basically 18 years old, right?
04:36 When you're doing a high school musical
04:37 and to be catapulted into that kind of stardom.
04:41 And Hollywood is a really tough place
04:43 and there's a lot of stories where 20 years later,
04:47 they're not standing up here in this capacity.
04:51 So that's something that I've always kind of admired
04:53 about you is your grit to be able to deal with that.
04:56 But Zac didn't just wanna be famous.
05:00 He didn't care about being on the cover
05:02 of all those magazines.
05:03 He wanted to be an actor.
05:05 And that is why we're here today
05:07 because Zac has delivered on that promise.
05:11 He's a true triple threat with a combination
05:14 of immense talent, incredible work ethic
05:16 and above average face.
05:19 (audience laughing)
05:21 There isn't, hey, you know, it's like a five plus six.
05:25 (audience laughing)
05:26 There isn't, hey, there isn't a type of film, Zac,
05:30 that you haven't starred in and excelled in.
05:33 I mean, he sung and danced and held his own
05:37 opposite Hugh Jackman, which if you've seen
05:39 Oklahoma or Boy From Oz, like that is really impressive.
05:45 Working with Matthew Perry, Matthew Perry has since said,
05:48 you know, that he was so impressed
05:49 with your comedic abilities working with him
05:52 that he said if there was ever to be a biopic on him,
05:54 he would want you to play him.
05:56 And I know how much that meant to you.
05:58 I mean, that's, he's one of the all time greats.
06:01 He's played everything from the Lorax to Ted Bundy.
06:07 And I know you weren't the actual Lorax,
06:08 but I just forget the kid's character's name
06:11 that you played.
06:13 But you're the Lorax to me, buddy.
06:15 (audience laughing)
06:17 He's worked with directors like Harmony Corrine
06:19 and Peter Farrelly.
06:21 He also went ab for ab with Dwayne Johnson, what a psycho.
06:25 I mean, honestly, Zac, going through your resume
06:30 in preparation for this speech,
06:32 I realize why we will go months and months
06:35 without seeing each other,
06:36 because your schedule is just insane.
06:39 You are relentless, you're relentless in your passion
06:42 for storytelling and characters,
06:44 and your empathy and curiosity for the world we live in
06:48 and those we share it with,
06:50 which is apparent in the work you've done
06:51 in your series "Down to Earth"
06:52 and the various other humanitarian-based efforts
06:55 you did during your time in Australia,
06:58 and also in California,
06:59 and what that means to you to take care of the place
07:02 that helped raise you.
07:04 Zac, it has been an honor to share the screen with you
07:09 and to become your close friend and ally.
07:12 I've never once felt a competitiveness between us,
07:16 and I've never wanted anything for you
07:18 other than for you to succeed
07:20 and to continue to let your light shine, brother.
07:24 I am so proud of you for the man that you've become,
07:28 and so congratulations on having your star
07:30 on Hollywood Boulevard somewhere
07:32 in between Kermit the Frog and Lassie.
07:35 (audience laughing)
07:36 Keep on doing your thing, man, we'll be watching.
07:39 Much love.
07:39 (audience cheering)
07:43 Thank you, brother.
07:44 (audience applauding)
07:47 (whooshing)
07:50 (whooshing)
