00:00 Here's an overview of the traditional shouting in Nicaragua to honor the Virgin Mary known as La Griteria.
00:06 A correspondent, Kenya Doña, delves into the details of the history and significance of this cultural practice,
00:12 as well as the customs and rituals associated with this tradition.
00:16 [Shouting]
00:31 In an atmosphere of faith, tradition, and overflowing culture, the Catholic population of Nicaragua celebrates La Griteria,
00:38 in honor of the Virgin Mary.
00:40 Thousands of Nicaraguan citizens and other nationalities congregate in the Cathedral of León, in the west of the country.
00:46 The place where the shout of "Who is the one who causes so much joy?" is officially given in honor to the Immaculate Conception of Mary.
00:54 [Shouting]
00:57 It is something very important for us Catholics. I'm a Catholic, and this is in our blood.
01:02 The Virgin is everything for us Nicaraguans. Without her, we are nothing.
01:07 It seems to me a very beautiful expression of the popular fervor.
01:11 The Marian spirit and the religiosity of the people from León can be seen in the celebration of the shouting
01:17 and the festivity to the purest concession of Mary.
01:21 [Shouting]
01:23 And like this begins the pilgrimage of thousands of Catholic families who visit homes,
01:28 singing to the Virgin, and receive cups or toasts offered by the families celebrating this religious feast.
01:34 [Singing]
01:45 It means a lot to us because Our Lady has done so many miracles for us, and coming with the whole family, we bring a bag to carry the cups.
01:56 In the traditional cups, you're going to find the chinchinchito, the matraca, but also now it's being modernized and other things are given to the people.
02:09 It's an atmosphere of joy, rejoicing. Nicaraguans are very happy with this Catholic tradition.
02:17 This festivity of La Griteria arrived more than 400 years ago in León, but it has been officially celebrated for 166 years, and it has been passed from generation to generation.
02:33 My mother has taught me this tradition since I was a child.
02:40 That the Virgin is our mother and we should love her very much.
02:47 I go around shouting with fervor to the Virgin.
02:54 Not for what you are given, but to shout because that is the tradition.
03:01 We celebrate and shout out that Mary is our mother.
03:11 It is the devotion of my grandmother and then my mom, but my grandmother's family was the one who celebrated it.
03:19 My grandmother died of 98 and you had years to celebrate it, and now we continue.
03:25 It is a tradition plus work. It is health that she sends us. That is what we want.
03:32 By celebrating La Griteria, the Nicaraguan population reaffirms its commitment to the Virgin Mary and strengthens faith and family unity, as well as to promote peace in the country.
