Suella Braverman was guest of honour at the Ellwood Atfield Political Cartoon of the Year Awards last night, but the assembled scribblers were not in the honouring mood. She took the stage to panto boos and said “the heckling has started already”.“Boy have you painted me horrifically,” she complained in her first speech since leaving government, “they say politics is showbusiness for ugly people and judging by your cartoons of me that is definitely true.” “It’s called realism,” shouted one wag. “Ah, there we go,” she sighed. Braverman wondered if one particularly disturbing depiction of her as the girl from The Exorcist was a compliment. “It wasn’t,” quipped a freelance cartoonist for The Guardian. “Would you like to come up?,” Braverman asked, glowering into the crowd, “you’ve got so much to say! Come on, come on then.” The cartoonist, Rebecca Hendin, mounted the stage before host Gavin Ellwood intervened, asking them to save the boxing match for later.Braverman carried on with awards, handing a large wooden spoon to runner up  Steve Bell, who was sacked from The Guardian this year after four decades when he drew an image some thought anti-Semitic.

00:00 It's a real honour to join you this evening to present...
00:04 Oh, the heckling has started already!
00:06 I mean, they say that politics is showbiz for ugly people,
00:12 and judging by your cartoons of me, that is definitely true.
00:16 So, I think, actually...
00:20 Sorry, what was that?
00:22 Thank you.
00:23 What was that?
00:23 Ah, there we go. Absolutely.
00:28 I've got to say, I have hugely enjoyed all of them.
00:31 Well, most of them. Most of them.
00:34 And there's definitely a theme to them, which is slightly worrying.
00:39 Anyone seen Spitting Image?
00:40 Yes.
00:41 Spitting Image had me as the girl from The Exorcist,
00:46 which was described in one review as disturbing in a very entertaining way.
00:53 I'm not sure if that's a compliment. I don't think it is.
00:56 No, it hasn't.
00:57 [LAUGHTER]
00:59 Would you like to come up? We've got so much to say.
01:01 Yeah.
01:02 Come on! Come on, then!
01:03 [CHATTER]
01:05 [LAUGHTER]
01:07 [APPLAUSE]
01:09 Hi! So nice to meet you!
01:11 OK.
01:14 Afterwards. We'll do the boxing match afterwards.
01:19 OK.
01:20 Let's let Soheila finish.
01:21 Love you. Love your work.
01:25 But you've also had me as an angry Statue of Liberty,
01:29 a superb raver man, an actual plain, and Barbie as well.
01:36 And you're a pillar of our free press.
01:39 And I hope that you continue, unhindered by political interference, financial interest...
01:45 [LAUGHTER]
01:47 And we have that in writing.
01:49 Or fear.
01:51 [LAUGHTER]
01:53 Or fear of causing offence.
01:54 In fact, whether politicians are offended is neither here or there.
02:02 And you can count on me to always fight for your right to offend.
02:07 [LAUGHTER]
02:08 Do they have the opportunity to see Rwanda?
