00:00 A sleepy motel in Adelaide's north, until recently home to a man released from immigration
00:07 detention. Now he's back in custody, facing charges for indecent assault.
00:11 Our response to the situation that we've been given is working as best as possible.
00:17 Ali Awari, among those freed in Perth last month, after serving nine years combined in
00:24 jail and immigration detention.
00:28 Police monitoring him before his alleged offending, aware he was in Adelaide along with five others,
00:33 including two convicted child sex offenders. Coy on whether a motel was an appropriate
00:38 place for Commonwealth officials to let him live.
00:40 What I think doesn't matter.
00:42 And on whether other former detainees were also there.
00:45 How many rooms has that hotel got?
00:47 30 or so.
00:48 You work it out.
00:49 Motel staff telling the ABC one other had checked out late last week.
00:53 So Senator Cash.
00:54 1200 kilometres away.
00:56 When you stop yelling at everybody.
00:58 The charges fuelling an already burning political fire.
01:01 As a government in this system we are bound to observe the decisions of the High Court.
01:06 You have one responsibility as a government. One responsibility to keep Australians safe.
01:13 Another former detainee in Melbourne has been arrested for breaching reporting obligations
01:18 for registered sex offenders, while a third has been fined in Sydney for drug possession.
01:23 Will the Prime Minister show some strength and sack Ministers Giles and O'Neill who created
01:29 this situation through their own incompetence?
01:33 We've done more in nine days than those opposite did in nine years.
01:37 An inconvenient truth.
01:40 Each day brings with it the possibility of more arrests.
01:43 Rather than endure the drip torture of that, the government agreed to ram new preventative
01:49 detention laws for the most serious criminals in this group through the Senate today, not
01:54 tomorrow.
01:54 At admission it has become a liability.
01:57 And for all the political outrage, the Coalition backed the measures.
02:01 Almost without dissent.
