00:00 I've never been to Biffle before, like I've always looked at this award and, you know,
00:03 thought how I always wanted to be a part of independent films, so it's a real honour to
00:08 be here and yeah, to do this film, which feels incredibly intimate and, you know, in my
00:13 own accent and a story based in the UK, it's really wonderful to be here celebrating with
00:19 everyone.
00:19 You're also here tonight, well we're also all here tonight celebrating a good friend
00:22 of yours, Stephen Graham.
00:23 Yes.
00:24 Well, first of all, did you know that he was going to get this and, yes, is it just going
00:28 to be like a bit of a Merseyside reunion once he arrives?
00:31 It is going to be a Merseyside reunion. I found out when my agent asked me if I would
00:36 do it very kindly because she said, "Stephen's too shy to ask you," which is crazy because
00:40 he's never shy. So then I text him and was like, "Of course I will!" So yeah, I'm really
00:46 honoured that he's asked me and it feels like I can, you know, give him something back for
00:50 all that he's kind of given me, yeah.
00:52 You mentioned that in the new film you are having your own accent, which I'm sure is
00:57 a rarity these days because everyone knows that you can do any accent on the planet.
00:59 I didn't know about that.
01:00 Are you going to be taking roles where essentially you'll think more favourably of it if I can
01:05 be myself?
01:06 Myself?
01:07 Yeah.
01:08 Well, I think what's beautiful is, you know, for so long I was always asked, like, "Can
01:11 you get rid of that accent?" So then more times often than not you find yourself doing
01:15 something different, whereas now I like to kind of celebrate, if I'm able to, kind of
01:19 celebrate that part of myself. And it also is one less thing to think about, if I'm being
01:24 honest.
01:25 So, 2023, when we look back at it, we're reaching the end of the year now, will we look back
01:28 at it as a strange year because there was such a big gap where, you know, so many people
01:31 weren't working? How are you going to be reflecting on 2023?
01:34 Oh my gosh. I spent a lot of the time in New York, I was doing a play over there and I
01:42 feel like I've been reflecting ever since, but I feel incredibly lucky to have been a
01:47 part of the projects that I have been. It has been very strange, but I'm very grateful
01:51 that the industry is kind of coming back and hopefully we can all get back to doing what
01:55 we really love.
01:56 Cheeky question, I know we're here to talk about independent films, however your name
01:59 has always banded around in terms of big budget blockbusters like the Marvel films and stuff.
02:04 Do you listen to that speculation and do you ever comment on things like that when we talk
02:07 about, say, Sue Storm in a Marvel film?
02:09 I get asked a lot about the speculation, but that's the first I hear of it. There's nothing
02:15 Marvel on the horizon as of yet, who knows, but yeah, no, I'm happy to be here.
02:20 And actually you are part of the best performance tonight. It's an ungendered category, which
02:26 is a rarity in terms of awards these days. Do you think that's kind of like a sign, a
02:30 progressive way that the industry should go in?
02:33 It should go in. I mean, absolutely. I think it's, I have no issues with, you know, a kind
02:39 of gender neutral category. I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of it with the incredible
02:43 people who are in it, you know, so I think it's a celebration regardless.
02:46 - Yeah, fantastic.
02:47 - Yeah.
02:48 - Good luck tonight.
02:49 - Thank you so much.
