00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 It is time for another Car Expert Drag Parason.
00:04 This is the Volkswagen Amarok,
00:05 and that is also the Volkswagen Amarok.
00:07 The one on the right is a four-cylinder turbo petrol.
00:10 The one on the left is a turbocharged V6 diesel.
00:13 We want to see how quick these are compared to each other
00:15 because the Ford Ranger platform here in Australia
00:18 is only available with diesel,
00:20 unless you go for the Raptor.
00:22 This is the first time it's been offered with a turbo petrol.
00:25 Today, we're gonna do a drag race.
00:26 We're gonna do a sound comparison.
00:28 We want to figure out exactly
00:29 how these two compare against each other.
00:31 If you do want to skip ahead to other parts of this video,
00:33 you can use the time codes on the screen.
00:35 If you're on YouTube,
00:36 you can scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:38 If you haven't done so already, subscribe to our channel,
00:39 press the bell icon,
00:41 so you can find out every single time
00:42 we do a Car Expert Drag Parason.
00:44 So, time to do a sound test.
00:48 We'll start off with the V6 diesel.
00:51 Fire it up, Scott.
00:52 (engine revving)
00:55 (engine revving)
00:58 Sounds very diesel-y.
01:01 And you can see it's got a dump pipe
01:03 that goes straight down there.
01:04 Okay, so four-cylinder time.
01:06 Let's have a little look under here.
01:08 Oh, so slightly different exhaust pipe.
01:10 Fire it up, Scott.
01:11 Have a listen.
01:12 (engine revving)
01:15 That sounds fun.
01:20 I actually think this would sound great with an exhaust,
01:22 given this engine is so closely related to Mustang.
01:25 I think Focus RS as well.
01:28 I'd love to hear what this sounds like
01:29 with a bit of a tune and an exhaust.
01:30 So, let's go for a drag race.
01:34 Okay, so it is time to see who is quicker.
01:37 These are slightly different specs.
01:39 This one here is a top spec,
01:40 whereas that one is a step down.
01:42 They weigh roughly the same,
01:44 but it'll just give you a good idea
01:46 of how much faster the petrol is.
01:47 The petrol is only available in this specification.
01:50 Okay, Igor, we are ready for our countdown.
01:53 - Three, two, one, go.
01:55 - Bye.
01:58 (laughing)
02:00 All right, it's actually gapping the V6 pretty substantially.
02:04 I think Scott was a bit lazy off the line there,
02:10 but yeah, we well and truly gapped him there.
02:13 So, we're gonna give that one more shot,
02:15 'cause I think Scott was napping,
02:17 and we'll see how it goes.
02:19 Okay, run number two.
02:21 I've told Scott to actually be awake for this one.
02:24 So, let's hope he actually is.
02:26 It's worth pointing out as well
02:27 that the V6 is on an all-terrain tyre,
02:30 whereas we're on a slightly more road-focused tyre here.
02:33 Shouldn't make a huge amount of difference,
02:34 but just wanna put that caveat out there.
02:37 Okay, Igor, give us our countdown.
02:39 - Three, two, one, go.
02:41 - Ooh, he got the jump then.
02:45 I think we'll still reel him in.
02:46 Let's see how we go.
02:48 Ooh, this is gonna be close.
02:50 Oh, this is gonna be close.
02:51 Ooh, just got him.
02:56 (laughs)
02:58 Yes.
02:59 Okay, he definitely, definitely got the jump there.
03:03 All right, one more time.
03:05 Gotta leave at the same time.
03:06 - I think I timed that one to perfection.
03:08 - Definition of perfection
03:09 could be slightly off kilter there.
03:11 - Don, do you mind checking the Harvey Dylan KFC replay?
03:14 (engine revving)
03:17 - Bunker says he jumped the start.
03:20 - All right, one more time.
03:22 Okay, run number three this time.
03:25 Hopefully Scott is actually aware of how this works.
03:29 See how we go.
03:31 All right, Igor, count us in.
03:33 - And again in three, two, one, go.
03:37 - That's better, that's better.
03:38 All right, this is a fair contest.
03:41 See ya.
03:41 Bye.
03:44 (laughs)
03:46 That is pretty much a full car length ahead there
03:52 and gaining.
03:52 So I think it is safe to say that the petrol Amarok
03:57 is an absolute beast, absolute beast.
04:00 So let's go back and just get some performance numbers
04:02 on this on its own
04:04 so we actually have some figures to work with.
04:07 Okay, so I thought let's actually just log some numbers here
04:11 so we have a frame of reference
04:13 for how quick this is.
04:15 I'll run it in two wheel drive high range first
04:17 with traction off
04:18 and we'll come back and do four wheel drive automatic
04:21 and see how quick that is.
04:23 So here we go.
04:24 Nice.
04:29 Right at the limit of wheelslip off the line there too.
04:32 So all the way through to 120.
04:35 All right, there's 120.
04:39 Come to a stop.
04:42 Okay, so let's have a little look here at our numbers.
04:46 Zero to 100, 7.52 seconds,
04:51 which is not too bad.
04:52 I think that's actually not a bad number at all.
04:54 So 80 to 120, 4.93 seconds.
04:57 So it shows you it has a really nice mid range,
04:59 gets off the line nice and fast too and just hooks up.
05:01 So we'll come back and give that a crack
05:03 in four wheel drive automatic
05:05 and see whether we can extract a little bit more
05:07 out of it or not.
05:08 Okay, so four wheel drive automatic.
05:12 We'll just roll into that.
05:14 I've left traction control off.
05:17 Dial up a few revs and we'll see how we go.
05:19 All right, here we are.
05:21 That feels nice and strong off the line.
05:26 I mean, in theory, four wheel drive automatic
05:28 will sap a little bit more power out of the equation.
05:31 But you never know.
05:34 It could be calibrated to actually up the power output
05:37 in four wheel drive automatic.
05:38 So let's see how it compared to two wheel drive high range.
05:42 7.37 seconds.
05:44 So it was ever so slightly quicker there
05:47 in four wheel drive automatic with traction control off.
05:50 So it's a pretty impressive time when you consider
05:53 that the Raptor isn't,
05:54 look, Raptor is quicker than this,
05:55 but it's not a huge amount quicker.
05:58 So I think that what they've done here
06:00 with the four cylinder is actually pretty good as well.
06:04 I've thrown some numbers up on the screen there too
06:06 so you can actually compare what it's like
06:07 for the V6 Amarok and also the Ranger as well
06:12 to give you a bit of a point of reference
06:14 where there's slots into the mix.
06:15 I really would love to see them off of this engine
06:17 across the Ranger range,
06:18 and perhaps not only in the top spec of Amarok too.
06:21 But yeah, I'm pretty impressed with these numbers
06:24 and pretty impressed with the fact that it actually
06:27 moves away from the V6 diesel as well
06:29 in terms of acceleration.
06:31 So there you go, that was short and sweet.
06:36 Another drag Paris and done.
06:38 I'm genuinely impressed by the engine in that.
06:40 I really do hope someone goes and tunes
06:43 the living daylights out of that
06:45 'cause I reckon it could be some serious fun to drive.
06:47 Now let me know, what else do you want to see us drag race?
06:49 Let me know in the comments section below.
06:52 Doesn't have to be just you,
06:53 so we can think outside the box a little bit.
06:55 I'm keen for your feedback.
