00:00 We're here with the one and only Miguel, who I adore.
00:04 Thank you very much, very kind.
00:06 So, "Sure Thing" is no stranger to a number one on the Billboard charts.
00:11 I mean, how does it feel to have a song that's an older hit crawl its way up to number one?
00:17 I mean, it's a massive blessing.
00:20 It's a testament to how fans can really push a song,
00:24 and great songwriting can kind of live on and live forever,
00:27 and how great music still matters.
00:29 I feel really grateful and blessed,
00:32 especially to have learned great songwriting from incredible teachers,
00:36 musicians like Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway and Diane Warren,
00:41 and so many, so many great writers that I really pull from as inspiration.
00:45 Yeah, and is it--I mean, you kind of spearheaded, in a lot of ways,
00:50 a style of R&B that I think kind of crosses over genres.
00:54 It's not fitting into a box.
00:56 How do you get yourself in the headspace to be able to not define yourself by any genre?
01:02 I mean, I think being self-defined is probably the most awesome thing that we get to do in this life.
01:11 I think being able to kind of transform yourself
01:17 is a part of the opportunity that we have in this time and space,
01:21 and I try my best to apply that through my artistry.
01:25 I think artists like Prince, artists like David Bowie inspire me to do that and be that way,
01:30 and that's the kind of artist I'll always be.
01:32 Yeah, individuality in art, that's the most important thing.
01:34 And of course, speaking of art, your fashion is always on point.
01:38 How does art--how does fashion and music intersect for you?
01:42 It's just expression, you know, emotionality.
01:44 I think things that pull emotions out of us are what inspire us to enjoy life,
01:50 whether it's food or whether it's music.
01:53 All of these are things that pull emotions out of us, and that's what life's all about.
01:58 And lastly, I've got to ask you, what are you listening to right now?
02:01 Right now I'm listening to Andre's album.
02:03 A lot of people are saying that. I mean, he hit us with the flute.
02:06 Had to, had to. Music, you know, just music.
02:09 Well, thank you so much, Miguel. I'm such a big fan of yours.
02:12 Thank you so much for the kindness.
02:13 And have a great evening.
02:14 Yeah, you too. Stay warm.
02:15 Thank you. Bye.
