Why do people in Newark still shop in the market?

In its weekly voxpop, the Advertiser found out if people still shop at Newark Royal Market and why.

00:07 Vegetable ladies are brilliant. We just love the open freedom of it and the atmosphere. It's just great.

00:17 And these are fresh veg from a local farm, so we would drive miles but we're only up the road at Balderton.

00:24 And then we also use the meat and the cheese and whatever. I think it's lovely.

00:30 And the ambience as well is beautiful in the square.

00:33 And surrounded by all the lovely old buildings. It's just brilliant.

00:37 Yeah, because of the tradition of the market, I was born in Newark.

00:42 I love coming to the veg shop here because it's all locally grown vegetables,

00:45 so I think it's really important to support local produce and local people that work here.

00:51 It's really important, otherwise you don't use it, you lose it.

00:54 Well, the reason is that there's like this lady behind us, that superb quality.

01:03 There is the stuff in there and it's well worth coming in for that.

01:09 But to be honest with you, a lot of the time there's a chap over there that we buy things off.

01:14 It's to do with trying to support these people who are doing a good job.

01:19 And it's so easy to come to, so that's what we do.

01:24 But it's supporting people, that's what we need to do.

01:28 Instead of just shops that are... well, not shops, you've got to have shops, haven't you?

01:33 That's the whole thing.

01:35 We like to support the local growers and the independent people, you know, market traders.

01:44 I think it's better produce, personally.

01:47 It's much fresher produce as well.

01:49 I mean, it could be days before the produce is being sold to the public.

01:56 In the soap market.

01:58 I don't think markets should disappear, because the nice people, you get a nice bargain.

02:03 For the colour, the people, the bargains and a nice variety.

02:09 Because that stall down there has the best bread in miles

02:14 and the vegetable stall is homegrown, on the ground, out of the ground, I should say.

02:21 And you can't get any fresher.

02:24 That's about it.

02:26 It's always interesting to wander around a market.

02:30 I've done it for years, I was a boy, visiting different places.

02:33 It's always interesting to come and see.

02:35 I'm a little bit disappointed there are no books.

02:38 I'm a real fan of second-hand books.
