00:00 Welcome back to Pinoy MD, Kapuso Ngayon Pung Umaga.
00:03 We are joined by our resident internist and wellness expert
00:07 to answer your Facebook questions.
00:11 No one else but Doc Oye Balburrias.
00:14 Good morning to you, Doc Oye.
00:16 Good morning, Connie, and good morning to our Kapuso who are tuning in to our show.
00:21 For our first question, Doc Oye,
00:23 a two-year-old child with colon cancer
00:27 is it possible to get it if it's in their womb?
00:32 The question is from June Calasi.
00:35 Yes, it's possible, especially if there is a condition called
00:40 hereditary colonic polyposis where there is predisposition of an individual
00:46 even a child, especially if we trace it to your family tree
00:50 where many people have colon cancer.
00:53 This is the first reason why a child as young as two years old
00:58 can develop colon cancer.
01:02 And for our next question, is it true, Doc,
01:04 as said by Furly Shoson, that children are hyper when they eat chocolate?
01:11 Well, it depends on the content of the chocolate,
01:16 simple sugars or white refined sugars.
01:20 Because that's what will cause, number one, it will cause hyperactivity
01:25 because it can affect the balance of the neurotransmitters,
01:31 the inhibitory neurotransmitters versus the excitatory neurotransmitters.
01:36 But if the cacao content of a chocolate is high
01:40 and its simple refined sugar content is low,
01:45 not supposedly, but if it's too high,
01:48 especially if there are additional ingredients, additives or preservatives
01:54 that can cause alteration, imbalance of neurotransmitters,
02:00 particularly what we call glutamate,
02:03 that will cause hyperactivity in children.
02:06 This is our next question.
02:08 Should gallstones be operated when the child is from 0.2 to 0.5 years old
02:15 or can it be operated only on medication?
02:18 This question is from CGNet.
02:21 CGNet, I think it's important to give a disclaimer.
02:25 Whoever requested this test, you should go to them
02:30 because the size is very specific.
02:33 Although it's small, and the indication for a person to undergo surgery
02:39 or gallbladder surgery, there are many factors to consider.
02:43 Not only the size of the stone.
02:45 Although if the stone is small,
02:47 especially if it triggers what we call gallbladder contraction,
02:53 these are the sizes of stones that can pass through the narrow part of our abdomen.
03:00 But there are many considerations before a doctor considers
03:05 the indication if it's right for you to undergo gallbladder surgery
03:10 or remove your abdomen.
03:12 We have another question from Line A.
03:16 What are the so-called sludge balls that are found in the gallbladder?
03:21 What is that?
03:22 The sludge is an indication that the path of bile in your abdomen is not proper.
03:31 In fact, it is likely to cause bleeding or the flow is not proper or the flow is laminar.
03:39 So instead of going to the small intestines,
03:43 the sludge is going to the gallbladder.
03:47 So basically, it's like a sludge ball.
03:51 We can help with that.
03:53 There are foods that you can eat to fix the flow of bile
04:00 from the gallbladder to our small intestine.
04:03 These are called "colegogues" of foods.
04:07 A good example of that is artichokes.
04:11 Or apples are also one of the colegogues of foods.
04:15 Even coffee can help with that.
04:17 That's why some people eat coffee after a meal,
04:20 especially if the food is heavy, they drink coffee.
04:23 Because coffee acts like a colegogue.
04:26 It helps the easy flow of bile from our abdomen to our small intestine.
04:35 And our next question, Doc, is it true that the acidic "Bignay" leaves are good or tasty?
04:44 This is a question from RGJR.
04:47 You know, there are many studies done on this fruit, the "Bignay".
04:53 Because there are many of these, like in our country, in Southeast Asia, like Malaysia.
04:57 This fruit is very endemic.
05:00 So it's good to use in making juice.
05:04 But it was studied that its phenol content contributes to its antioxidant capacity.
05:11 There are many claims about this food,
05:14 but I only know that it has a high antioxidant capacity.
05:19 If this can contribute to controlling acid, I have not read any evidence.
05:25 And let's remember, when the symptoms of hyperacidity occur,
05:30 the acid is not the real problem of our small intestine.
05:33 It's the damage of the intestinal wall, or what we call the mucosal barrier.
05:39 Thank you so very much, Doc Oye, for answering our Facebook questions.
05:42 And to all of those who sent their questions, keep them coming.
05:47 Because maybe next Saturday, we'll be able to answer your questions.
05:51 Thank you.
