00:03 The Santiago 2023 Pan American Games continue in Chile.
00:16 We go live with journalist Eduardo Regonesi.
00:19 Hi, Eduardo.
00:20 What can you tell us of today's sporting events?
00:22 Good morning.
00:26 How are you?
00:26 We're here, indeed, live at the Olympic Training Center
00:29 in Santiago, Chile, where the action started very early
00:32 this morning.
00:33 Around 9 o'clock, we had the first final
00:36 in badminton, females couples badminton,
00:39 where Canada defeated the United States team 2 to 1.
00:44 Later on, it was the turn of the guys, the men's couple
00:47 in badminton, where Canada also defeated Brazil this time
00:52 in the couples men round.
00:55 Badminton, a sport that's maybe not as well known
00:58 in this part of the world.
00:59 It's very popular in Asian countries.
01:02 In fact, all of the athletes from Canada and the United
01:06 States are of Asian background.
01:08 This is because there's a lot of immigration in these two
01:11 countries, and these families have kept the tradition alive.
01:14 And they came here to Santiago, Chile as favorites,
01:17 and they were able to uphold that status favorites.
01:21 In fact, United States and Canada,
01:23 in all five of the gold medal matches of today,
01:26 in all five of those, United States or Canada are present.
01:30 Maybe even both.
01:30 There's a couple of finals that are all United States
01:33 and all Canada.
01:35 In other sports that are happening today,
01:37 let's talk about baseball a little bit.
01:38 Today, Chile just lost to Venezuela,
01:42 Venezuela playing the match that they didn't want to play.
01:45 Venezuela came to Santiago as one of the favorites,
01:48 but didn't make it to the second round.
01:49 Yesterday, we were talking about this.
01:52 Colombia defeated Venezuela.
01:53 Venezuela needed a win to make it to the second round,
01:56 but they didn't make it.
01:57 Colombia went through and is joining Brazil, Panama,
02:01 and Mexico in the second round.
02:03 Cuba also didn't make it.
02:05 Cuba, it's been a decline for them in baseball.
02:10 They were, out of 18 previous Pan-American games,
02:14 they have medals in 15.
02:16 And they didn't achieve a medal in Peru.
02:18 They didn't achieve one this year,
02:20 so it's a very disappointing performance from the Cuban team.
02:23 Let's talk about other sports that are happening today.
02:26 Of course, hockey, field hockey.
02:29 It started this morning.
02:30 Argentina, one of the favorites to take the gold.
02:34 Also, swimming is going to be happening today.
02:36 Swimming, tennis, and other competitions
02:39 are going to be happening here in Santiago.
02:41 Let's do a quick review of what happened yesterday.
02:43 We had medals for--
02:46 medals in Taekwondo.
02:47 Brazil got a gold medal in Taekwondo.
02:50 Dominican Republic got two medals in Taekwondo.
02:52 And Chile got the silver medal on this discipline.
02:56 Also, in water sports, Colombia had a medal.
02:58 Chile times two.
03:00 And Argentina got a gold medal on water board
03:04 in ski competition.
03:05 So very good performance from the South Americans
03:08 in the water.
03:10 Finally, yesterday we were on the mountain climbing,
03:14 wall climbing, with a very, very fun competition.
03:17 A lot of people went to Cerrillo Stadium
03:19 to see this new event.
03:20 It was wall climbing, where, let's say,
03:23 United States took most of the medals.
03:26 They took five out of the six medals, went to United States.
03:29 The sixth one went to Canada.
03:30 But what really mattered yesterday
03:33 was the good vibe that was happening at the Cerrillo
03:36 Stadium, where all the athletes were highly supported
03:40 by most of the crowd.
03:42 We are going to stay here.
03:43 There's a couple of matches happening right now.
03:46 Boxing started.
03:47 There's no medals for boxing today.
03:49 But there's a lot of Latin American representatives
03:52 that are going to be fighting.
03:53 And of course, we will bring you all the details
03:56 as soon as we can.
03:58 Back to you guys in the studio.
04:00 Thank you, Eduardo, for these latest updates
04:03 on the current Pan American Games being held in Chile.
