00:00 Registrations of marriage carried out at the National Registration Department, or NRD,
00:06 are done based on civil laws and do not involve any religious or cultural rituals.
00:11 In a statement on Wednesday, NRD explained that civil registration of marriages was per
00:16 the Law Reform Marriage and Divorce Act, 1976.
00:20 It said the agency was responsible for registering civil marriages and recording information
00:25 on marriages and divorces of non-Muslims.
00:27 NRD also said the pledge by the registrar are words contained under Section 23 of the
00:34 Act, and that it is also an expression of agreement and willingness of a couple to be
00:39 in the marriage.
00:40 The department's explanation came after a viral video showing Home Minister Datuk Seri
00:45 Saifuddin Nasution Ismail registering a civil wedding of a non-Muslim couple.
00:51 The event was held earlier in conjunction with NRD's 75th anniversary, where the registrations
00:56 of two civil marriages were part of the program.
01:00 The department also said that based on the Act, the Home Minister was responsible for
01:04 registering civil marriages.
01:06 The department has called on the public to stop circulating false information.
