00:00 Run for a cause this October 29 as the Earthrun 2023 kicks off at the city of Imus Grandstand
00:05 and Track Oval in Cavite. And to get us all pumped up for this, joining us live is Earthrun 2023
00:12 host Sam Oh. Sam, it's such a pleasure to have you. Hi Paolo. By the second time this year,
00:16 I feel like I'm winning a race. You are. We need to hear more often. Listen, Earthrun,
00:21 give us the overview of this. I mean, usually you talk about, you talk about 10k, 21k,
00:27 we're talking about 40,120 kilometers. How do we do this? Not in one race, of course. This is really
00:33 a global movement is what we're aiming for. Gathering runners from all over the world to
00:38 do their part in logging in 40,120 kilometers, which is equivalent to the circumference of the
00:44 earth, hence the name Earthrun. Right. This is an endeavor by a group of a youth volunteer group
00:51 called We Are One. It is the youth volunteer group of the church that I belong to, which is called
00:56 Shincheonji, or New Heaven and New Earth, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony. And
01:01 yeah, this started in South Korea. We are a group of about 90,000 volunteers, 70,000 of them in
01:09 Korea, 20,000 all over the world, the Philippines being one of them. And we're so excited to do it
01:14 here. All right. This is always a question that I have is, is how can the Earthrun or how can my
01:20 participation in the run actually benefit the earth? Yeah. Well, I think personally, for me,
01:28 at this day and age where we're hearing a lot of news about conflict and war around the world,
01:32 it's really easy to fall into that trap of feeling paralyzed by helplessness or being overwhelmed,
01:39 feeling like you're not going to make a difference. What can I possibly do to make a
01:43 difference? But I think personally, I find it very empowering to do something that is on the opposite
01:48 side of the spectrum. So doing something to foster feelings of unity or peace, interconnectedness,
01:55 and we can really make a difference when we come together as one, hence the name We Are One. So
02:01 yeah, that is the aim of the event. Okay. I mean, it's not obviously, it's not just fundraising.
02:06 It's not, it's also coming together for a common goal. It's just everybody sort of channeling their
02:10 energies towards unity, coming together and just doing something, setting our sights on a goal that
02:16 we're all going to achieve together. However, there is obviously also still the fundraising
02:20 part of this and the proceeds actually go towards concrete projects. Yes. So there is a registration
02:26 fee, 300 pesos, 200 if you're a student, and we are partnering with the city government of IMUS.
02:32 So proceeds, part of the proceeds will go to their initiatives and then the rest will go to
02:37 the different activities of We Are One, which we have a variety of activities because our
02:42 initiatives have to do with relief operations, protecting the environment, providing quality
02:48 education, peace initiatives, and all that good stuff. So yeah. Okay. Well, when we talked about
02:55 the figure 40,120, you know, it's sort of, it's a dizzying thought. It's like, how can I, exactly,
03:03 how can I make a dent in this huge number? And I think that's really what we're trying to address
03:08 here. Everybody pitches in, everybody takes a little chunk of it and everybody does their share.
03:13 Yeah. We're talking about pretty manageable distances as far as participating in this event.
03:17 Yes. You can choose from 1K, 3K, 5K. Doable. Super doable. Super doable. I'm not a runner myself,
03:23 but I will show up and log in my 5K, cry for help, you know, and that's it. We can all do something.
03:30 I know. If everybody sort of pitches in, and I think that's what, that's really what our advocacy
03:34 is all about. One small act is do that one little, little, little thing. Yeah. If you're going to do
03:39 something, make it this thing. Yes. Take part and really sort of make a contribution and be one
03:45 with everybody in our common goal. Yes. And I'm really, you know, inviting the youth of the
03:51 Philippines because, you know, as we said, this is a run that is happening in different parts of the
03:56 world. So it's happened already in countries like Germany, Japan, Malaysia, cities like San Francisco
04:02 and Atlanta in the US, South Korea, of course, Madagascar, Cameroon, Zambia. And I insist that we
04:10 put the Philippines on this map as well. Absolutely. When it comes to participation, I think we actually
04:15 logged some pretty good numbers. I think everybody's excited. Let's just round off the discussion with
04:20 how can you register? You mentioned the fee already, but how can you register and are there
04:25 slots still open? Yes, absolutely. There are slots open. You can go to WeAreOnePH on Facebook. All
04:30 the registration details are there. Again, this is happening on October 29. That's a Sunday at the
04:36 city of Imus Grandstand and Track Oval. And, you know, not only the Earth Run, but we also have
04:41 a big blood donation campaign that we do. And I believe this will be a yearly thing. When we launched
04:47 in July of last year, this was our first major endeavor. It was a campaign called Life On.
04:52 And at the time, there was a shortage in the national blood supply in Korea because of the
04:57 COVID pandemic. And we were able to gather over 73,000 blood donors to donate. And in the process,
05:04 we boosted the national blood supply and we ended up setting a Guinness World Record for the most
05:10 number of blood donors gathered online in 24 hours. That number being 71,121. And apparently,
05:17 that makes us officially amazing. So how cool is that? You're amazing. The way you rattle off
05:21 these figures, you've got all these numbers memorized. I have a cheat sheet. It works. You
05:24 certainly chose the right gal for this job. I tell you what though, you're doing your blood drive.
05:28 You've got to run. We've got blood. We've got sweat. Tears of joy when we all come together
05:36 and take part in this. Sam, it's always great to have you on here. Earth Run 2023, October 29.
05:41 Don't miss it. Sam, thank you so much for joining us. Thank you. Can I just thank our friends who
05:45 are helping us do this? The city government of Imus Cavite, Mayor Alex Advincola, and our water
05:50 sponsor Nature Spring. We love you. We'll see you there. Thank you so much, Sam. All right, folks.
05:56 You can catch One Small Act every Saturday, 7.30. Please don't miss it. Sundays and Tuesdays only
06:04 here on CNN Philippines for our replays.
