00:28 One would think a number of regions would find God of War grotesque enough to where the game would be banned or heavily

00:35 censored across a multitude of regions. However, most of the world was fine with the number of separated limbs and red fountains.

00:42 Japan on the other hand was not.

00:45 Any and all dismemberment was removed in the Japanese version mostly because of CERO.

00:51 That's C E R O. The ratings board for Japan and their stance on the player doing violent actions.

00:58 It probably didn't help that most of God of War's violence is inflicted upon humans and human-like characters.

01:07 Ten years, Athena. I have faithfully served the gods for ten years.

01:18 One of the segments in Athens sees Kratos fighting a cyclops while denizens panic and run amok.

01:24 Screaming their lungs out. Though they don't bring much to the table, Kratos can grab them to earn a small amount of health.

01:31 The same applies when traveling on the road to Athens.

01:34 Once again, CERO was not for this part of the game. While the levels themselves were untouched,

01:40 the ability to off the citizens for your own personal gain was axed.

01:54 Brothers, put aside the petty grievances that have splintered us for so long.

02:03 God of War 3 is arguably the most gruesome entry in the franchise, if not Ascension, but that's besides the point.

02:10 You would think this would lead to a large number of censors plastered all over the game in some areas.

02:16 On the contrary, many of the brutal scenes are left untouched, except for two.

02:21 One of those two involves how some unalived people have their bones protruding from their limbs.

02:28 The Japanese version has the bones completely removed though. Just the bones.

02:33 Corpses are fine. They're still there. Just no bones.

02:53 Yeah, we had a feeling this scene was going to get altered the second we saw it.

03:00 Ascension's grisly martyr's chamber segment involves one dead person losing their arms should Kratos fail the puzzle.

03:07 Care to guess who had the scene altered?

03:09 Well, it wasn't Japan this time, but Germany. And get this, it wasn't even the limbs coming off

03:17 that was the problem. They just simply had the Fountain of Gore removed.

03:26 Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

03:31 The weirdest thing about this was that Germany had no problems with the original iteration of God of War 2.

03:37 Looks like someone had a change of heart when Blue Point Games touched it up for the PS3.

03:42 The HD version of God of War 2 was altered specifically in the section where Kratos meets the woman with Gaia's voice.

03:50 While the sweet keister was left undisturbed in every other corner of the world,

03:55 Germany said, "That ain't gonna fly with our core values," and had the booty covered.

04:04 The HD version.

04:16 To be honest, we're not quite sure what the problem was here.

04:23 Maybe Pollux's death is viewed as too vicious in Germany and Japan?

04:27 In the uncensored version, all Kratos does is stomp on his head. One stomp.

04:32 It wasn't a death as vicious as any of the other ones we've seen before, like in, say, God of War 3,

04:37 but for some reason, this was just too much for Germany, and the camera zooms in on the ghost of Sparta before his foot comes down.

04:45 The end of Herx Adventures.

04:55 Call it my 13th and final labor.

04:59 Soon I will become the God of War and claim the throne for myself.

05:05 God of War 3 could have had just about all of its deaths censored in Japan if violence was that big of a concern.

05:11 And yet, the only boss whose death got toned down was Hercules.

05:16 Yeah, getting your face beaten to a pulp is an awfully savage way to go out,

05:21 but how could you possibly tone this down even further?

05:24 Well, just remove the bloodshed.

05:27 That's it. Now the game is A-OK...

05:30 somehow.

05:33 Birthday suits!

05:39 We'll keep this one brief since we can't show too much of this, but God of War is no stranger to nudity,

05:49 and there are times where it might be a bit much for some.

05:53 So we don't blame Europe and Japan for not wanting people running around with Kratos in the birthday suits.

06:08 It's the scene everyone who has played the original game knows, but before we get into that specific portion,

06:15 there is one alteration we found a tad interesting.

06:18 In the Sacrificial Chamber,

06:20 there is a note left by a guard before his death that reads,

06:23 "What the gods ask of me, I cannot do,

06:26 even for Pandora's box.

06:29 They are monsters now, and they were once men."

06:33 Considering some European countries might be too sensitive to religions being questioned and defied,

06:38 this scene was changed in PAL regions to instead read,

06:42 "I know I am weak, but I cannot be a part of this.

06:46 I have failed Athens."

06:48 It arguably changes a bit of the game's story and themes, but who are we to judge?

07:16 this one was the most heavily altered, and it was done for both Europe and Japan.

07:22 Look, the Sacrificial Chamber is one of the best scenes in the original God of War, for both its brutality

07:28 and character-defining moment for Kratos, but not everyone can stand seeing a digital human get cooked alive.

07:35 For the two regions, the human soldier is replaced with a monster,

07:39 and all of the dialogue that would have happened between Kratos and the soldier is completely cut out.

07:44 The same replacement was made with the other soldiers in cages. All of them changed into monsters.

07:50 We'd like to imagine that soldier is somewhere out there in his afterlife, in this alternate, censored version,

07:56 enjoying llamas and croissant.
