00:00 Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Melani has confirmed her separation from Andreo Giambarno,
00:12 a TV journalist.
00:14 This comes amid increasing public scrutiny over Andreo's recent sexist comments, both
00:20 in the media and reportedly in private conversations too.
00:28 Melani wrote on her social media accounts on Friday, October 20, "My relationship with
00:34 Andreo Giambarno, which lasted almost 10 years, ends here.
00:38 Our path has diverged from some time and the time has come to acknowledge it.
00:43 I thank him for the splendid years we spent together, for the difficulties we went through
00:48 and for giving me the most important thing in my life, which is our daughter."
00:54 Andreo is the presenter of a news program transmitted by Mediaset, part of the MFE media
01:00 group owned by the hires of the late Silvio Berlusconi, the former Premier and Melanie
01:06 Alley.
01:07 Twice this week, a different Mediaset program featured off-air clips from Andreo's show
01:13 revealing instances of him using offensive language and seemingly making inappropriate
01:19 advances toward a female co-worker.
01:23 In one of the clips, he was seen saying, "Why didn't I meet you before?"
01:27 In the second clip, a more explicit recording was broadcast on Thursday in which Andreo
01:33 was heard discussing a romantic involvement and suggesting to female colleagues that they
01:38 could collaborate with him if they oblige him with other physical favours.
01:43 The TV journalist had already been widely criticised in August for apparently victim-blaming
01:49 comments following a gang-rape case.
01:52 Regarding this, he said during his program, "If you go dancing, you have every right
01:58 to get drunk.
01:59 There shouldn't be any kind of misunderstanding and any kind of problem.
02:04 But if you avoid getting drunk and losing your senses, you might also avoid running
02:09 into certain problems and coming across a wall."
02:12 When asked about these comments, Melanie had said after that episode that she should not
02:18 be judged for comments made by her partner and that in the future she would not answer
02:23 questions about his behaviour.
02:25 Giorgia Melanie has been serving as the Prime Minister of Italy since 22nd October 2022
02:32 and she is the first woman to hold this position.
02:36 The high-profile split captured the media's attention and highlights the complexities
02:41 of maintaining a public image while navigating personal relationships.
02:46 The separation also raised questions about the role of politicians' personal lives
02:51 in the public eye and the responsibilities of public figures in choosing their partners.
