00:00 Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Saturday that the U.S. should not accept refugees from Gaza,
00:06 as tens of thousands flee their homes following an evacuation warning from Israel ahead of
00:11 a possible ground assault. "I don't know what (President Joe) Biden's gonna do, but we cannot
00:18 accept people from Gaza into this country as refugees. I am not going to do that," DeSantis,
00:25 who is vying for the GOP presidential nomination, said at a campaign stop in Kirsten, Iowa.
00:30 "If you look at how they behave, not all of them are Hamas, but they are all anti-Semitic.
00:36 None of them believe in Israel's right to exist," he continued. DeSantis argued that
00:42 Arab states should accept refugees from Gaza, who are attempting to cross south into Egypt,
00:47 rather than refugees being imported to the United States. DeSantis' characterization
00:53 of Gaza residents is not supported by public polling on the issue. In a July poll by the
00:59 pro-Israel organization The Washington Institute, 50 percent of Gazans agreed that Hamas should
01:05 stop calling for Israel's destruction and instead accept a permanent two-state solution
01:10 based on the 1967 borders. One of DeSantis's 2024 rivals, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson,
01:20 agreed with the Florida governor that the U.S. should not accept refugees from Gaza
01:24 but warned against making generalizations about them. "It's a danger any time that
01:29 you categorize a group of people as being simply anti-Semitic, but I've said it also
01:35 that we should not have refugees in here from Palestine. That's not our role. It's
01:40 the role of those countries surrounding there," Hutchinson told reporters in Nashua, New Hampshire,
01:47 on Saturday. In the wake of the surprise attack on Israel
01:50 last weekend by the militant group Hamas, DeSantis and other Republican presidential
01:56 hopefuls have voiced strong support for Israel. DeSantis and others have used the attack to
02:01 argue for hardline immigration policies and stronger border security in the U.S.
02:07 On Thursday, DeSantis pushed back when confronted by a voter at a market in Littleton, New Hampshire,
02:13 who questioned Israel's treatment of Palestinians in Gaza. The voter said that he doesn't condone
02:19 what Hamas did or the killing of any innocent civilians, but that Israel is doing the exact
02:25 same thing with Benjamin Netanyahu, who is a "radical, right-wing crazy person," referring
02:31 to the country's prime minister. "And I see hundreds of Palestinian families that
02:36 are dead, and they have nowhere to go because they can't leave Gaza, because no one's
02:41 opening their borders," the voter said. DeSantis said the voter made a "really good"
02:46 point by bringing up neighboring countries, including Egypt and Saudi Arabia. "Why aren't
02:52 these Arab countries willing to absorb some of the Palestinian Arabs? They won't do
02:57 it," DeSantis said. The pair continued to have a back-and-forth
03:01 about the conflict. Before walking out of the market, the voter said, "You had my
03:06 vote, but you don't now." DeSantis has also taken steps as governor
03:10 of Florida to evacuate state residents from Israel. He told reporters in Manchester, New
03:16 Hampshire, on Friday that he anticipated the first evacuation flight would land in Florida
03:22 on Sunday. At a campaign stop in Council Bluffs, Iowa,
03:27 on Saturday night, he said evacuation flights have left Israeli airspace and are en route
03:32 to Florida. "We already have planes that have left Israel airspace and are on its way
03:38 to Florida. We're going to end up having hundreds and hundreds of Floridians that are
03:43 going to be brought back to Florida in the ensuing days," he told reporters.
03:48 DeSantis has also seized on former President Donald Trump's criticism of Netanyahu, slamming
03:54 the GOP frontrunner repeatedly in media appearances and on the campaign trail. He attacked Bibi
04:01 after the country suffered the worst attack it's had in its modern history. "A broken
04:06 bar and he did that because Bibi did not a-Bibi congratulated Biden in November. That's why
04:11 he did it. He hates Netanyahu because of that. That's about him. That's not about the greater
04:17 good of what Israel is trying to do or American security," DeSantis said Friday in New Hampshire.
