Hello everyone, welcome to the third installation of putting Dr G on the spot in this beautiful
00:06
pink October celebrating or bringing awareness to breast conditions that affect men.
00:13
And perhaps the biggest breast condition that affects men are big breasts in men called
00:20
gynecomastia.
00:28
Gynecomastia or sometimes derogatorily known as man boobs are actually protrusion or abnormal
00:37
excessive growth in men's breasts.
00:39
Why does that happen?
00:41
Actually it can be physiological or it can be endocrinological.
00:47
Physiologically and as a child is born there may be excess amount of estrogen in the body
00:53
then a male infant will have excessively big breasts.
00:59
In pediatric or adolescence there is change of hormone between testosterone and estrogen
01:05
and that itself can result in an enlarged breast and actually can affect up to 70% of
01:12
adolescent boys.
01:14
However as men get older there will be a condition called senile gynecomastia.
01:21
Senile doesn't mean that you are in your 80s, perhaps it also happens in your 50s.
01:28
And this is probably because of several factors that includes putting on weight.
01:33
For somebody who put on a lot of weight with truncal obesity then your estrogen level will
01:39
go up, your testosterone level comes down then you get gynecomastia.
01:44
Other conditions such as medication, there are certain drugs such as androgens that people
01:51
use or medication you use for hair loss and also medication such as antifungal itself
02:00
might also cause gynecomastia.
02:03
However men who worry about gynecomastia might worry about getting breast cancer.
02:10
On the contrary because breast cancer itself actually does not increase in risk with gynecomastia
02:17
in some way because gynecomastia produce a lot of the actual adipose tissues around the
02:24
breast.
02:25
If men develop breast cancer arguably you are protected against breast cancer being
02:30
too invasive.
02:32
So for those men who are really really upset about their growing chest line they might
02:38
consider several options.
02:40
One option is taking medication for breast cancer called tamoxifen.
02:45
Another option even radiotherapy of the chest or liposuction of the chest.
02:50
Otherwise if it really get too big you might even consider having a bra on.
02:56
But one thing for sure that actually will keep the chest really flat and nice without
03:01
gynecomastia is weight loss.
03:04
For the following week we are focusing even more breast conditions that affect men is
03:09
called nostalgia.
03:11
Why does that happen?
03:12
You need to find out.
03:14
Stay tuned for Putting Dr G on the Spot next week.
