HAODS bring one of the great modern musicals to the stage with a production of Hairspray at Horsham’s Capitol Theatre from Tuesday to Saturday, November 7-11. Directing it will be Adam Collins, one of his first dips into directing.

00:06 one of the best companies around, are staging one of the best musicals. You're doing Hairspray

00:13 at the Captain Horsham from November 7th to the 11th, and speaking now to Adam Collins,

00:19 who is directing now. What on earth are you producing for us? It's a fabulous show, isn't

00:25 it?

00:26 Oh, it's going to be absolutely incredible. I mean, Hairspray tells all the right stories

00:30 of living in the very modern world, telling the story of Tracy Turnblad, which on the

00:36 surface just looks like Tracy wanting to get onto the Corny Collins Show and achieve her

00:40 fame and fortune, but under the surface, you know, we're telling a story of racial segregation

00:45 and racism back in Baltimore, America in the 1960s. So really, really excited to kind of

00:51 tell the story in the correct way.

00:52 And that's the point of the whole thing, isn't it? It's not just entertaining, it's fabulously

00:57 entertaining, but it's also in a very nice way, educational, isn't it? It makes you think.

01:03 Absolutely. I mean, we're very lucky. It's perfect modern day musical theatre. It will

01:12 leave you leaving a theatre absolutely buzzing, having seen the most incredible show. But

01:17 I think what's also really important with Hairspray is that you leave and you have learnt

01:20 something.

01:21 And this is one of your first times directing. How are you enjoying that?

01:27 It's hard. It's really difficult. You know, having been on the stage myself, very lucky

01:33 to have been on the stage in a professional capacity. But directing is an entirely different

01:39 kettle of fish. All of a sudden, you're not just thinking about your own lines, your own

01:43 songs, you now have to encapsulate and see the whole production for what it is. So it

01:50 comes with its challenges. But I'll be honest, it's incredibly rewarding. It's incredibly

01:55 rewarding seeing these actors who I'm very, very lucky to have excel in what they do.

02:02 And I'm loving it. I'm loving it.

02:05 So is directing going to claim you entirely? Or will you balance performing and directing?

02:13 I think it's going to be a bit of both. I'm loving directing, as I say, but I do love

02:17 performing and I'm still, I'd like to think I'm still a young man. I've still got a few

02:21 grey hairs, but I still have some time on the stage. I hope, fingers crossed. But I

02:29 will be directing more and more, kind of in the future, I hope.
