00:00 It was just before midnight last night when this artillery strike hit a camp for internally
00:06 displaced people, effectively a refugee camp in Liza in Kachin State, which is in Myanmar's
00:12 north right up near the Chinese border.
00:14 Now, it's reported that at least 29 people were killed in that strike and dozens more
00:18 injured, although firm numbers are difficult to confirm.
00:23 But there are some really harrowing and graphic scenes emerging on social media of bodies
00:28 laid out, in particular bodies of children.
00:31 It seems like a lot of children were caught up in this amongst the debris and the rubble.
00:36 Now that camp was just kilometres away from the headquarters in this military camp run
00:42 by the Kachin Independence Army, which is in conflict with Myanmar's military junta.
00:48 Now the head of the KIA has said it's unclear what kind of attack this was.
00:53 No aeroplanes were heard overhead, so they're investigating whether or not it might have
00:57 been a drone strike.
00:59 But of course the Kachin Independence Army has been in conflict with Myanmar's military
01:05 for decades, but that's really ramped up since the coup in February 2021.
01:11 And last year, Myanmar military airstrikes on a KIA organised concert killed 50 people
01:18 and injured another 70.
01:20 So this is not unheard of, but there are so many civilians caught up in this, it's quite
01:24 devastating.
01:25 In recent months, tensions have really escalated in Kachin state.
01:30 There have been something like 80 battles and 20 airstrikes in the space of six weeks,
01:36 so things are really heating up there between the Kachin Independence Army and the military
01:41 junta.
01:42 Now, the Shadow National Unity Government have said that the military is responsible
01:48 for this attack, and they've called it a war crime and a crime against humanity, and they're
01:53 calling on the international community to act, but I'm yet to see much action or much
01:59 response from the international community.
02:01 Obviously, this has just happened.
