  • last year
The pawpaw is among the few fruits native to North America, but it’s practically impossible to find in grocery stores thanks to a short harvest season and very little public knowledge of its existence.

00:10 >> Bam.
00:14 >> Ooh.
00:15 >> Ooh.
00:16 >> [LAUGH]
00:19 >> Definitely too hard.
00:20 >> Yeah.
00:21 >> [LAUGH]
00:23 >> It's the tropical fruit that lost its way,
00:26 nothing like it that you find in this area will taste like it.
00:30 It's like good sweet custard.
00:32 You won't find them in grocery stores cuz they don't look very appealing.
00:37 When they're perfectly ripe and tasty, it's like a black banana.
00:41 And so just aesthetically, it's hard to sell it in grocery stores.
00:44 It's hard to get it through the food supply chain in a way that's very easy and
00:49 consumer friendly.
00:51 [BLANK_AUDIO]
00:55 >> It's not really like a fresh eating type thing.
00:57 >> Right there, walk on the belt.
00:59 >> That one looks like it'll be good.
01:01 >> Yep.
01:02 We just had a couple good trees and it's just pretty full now.
01:07 [BLANK_AUDIO]
01:17 >> They're good.
01:21 [BLANK_AUDIO]
01:31 >> I actually heard about pawpaws because they're in a Disney song in the Jungle
01:36 Book.
01:37 And I always thought they were a really tropical fruit far, far from me.
01:41 And then last year, my friend Neeraj brought them to an event and
01:44 he told me they were local.
01:46 And ever since then, I was waiting for this time again to learn how to harvest.
01:50 And I'm glad he had a class and now I can harvest them and
01:53 I can shake the trees all myself.
