“HD” stands for heavy duty and this large Chevy Silverado checks out on both counts: a curb weight more than 4 tons and 900-plus lb-ft of stump-pulling torque. But does it skidpad?

00:00 Stand back and take it all in.
00:04 This is the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD.
00:08 This is the heavy-duty, commercial-grade version of the Silverado.
00:16 It comes complete with a crew cab, huge bed, and, with the right equipment,
00:21 the ability to tow over 35,000 pounds.
00:24 This 2500 version is equipped with the 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8,
00:30 rated at 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet.
00:35 To compare, a Bugatti Veyron's torque is 922.
00:39 Between that huge thrust, all-wheel drive, and the quick-shifting Allison 10-speed transmission,
00:45 this beast launches like a sports car.
00:47 It hits 60 from a standstill in 6.5 seconds.
00:50 Incredibly quick for such a massive vehicle.
00:53 The quarter-mile passes in 15 seconds flat.
01:00 Around the figure-eight, the 2500 HD pulled an average of 0.60 g with a time of 28.3 seconds.
01:08 Come on, it's got off-road tires and is nearly 7 feet tall.
01:11 What did you expect?
01:13 To slow down, the Silverado HD has vented brake discs at all four corners.
01:19 Those yielded a 134-foot stop from 60, which, given the truck's 4-ton-plus curb weight, is pretty good.
01:27 Although, by the end of testing, the brake pedal felt soft and scarily long.
01:33 The takeaway?
01:34 When unladen, this ultra-powerful turbo-diesel work truck can more than get out of its own way.
01:40 Just make sure you get out of its.
