2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show

Motor Trend technical director Frank Markus gets a closer look at Cadillacs 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe that debuted at the 2014 Detroit auto show.

00:00 I'm here at the North American International Auto Show where Cadillac has just unveiled

00:12 the new ATS Coupe.

00:14 Now, Cadillac wants to compete with the big Germans, and as far as the sedan goes, we

00:18 think the ATS is already right on top of the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes C-Class.

00:24 But both of those cars offer coupes, so here's Cadillac's Coupe.

00:27 Now, as far as the look of the car, I think the Cadillac art and science look does best

00:31 on coupes.

00:32 Ever since the XLR, that's been the case.

00:34 I love this one just as much, although it does kind of exact a price in the back seat,

00:39 where the headroom is about two inches less than you get in the BMW 4 Series.

00:43 That's enough to make me have to cock my head.

00:45 But they say people don't carry adults in the backs of these cars anyway, so maybe who

00:49 cares.

00:50 As far as performance goes, Cadillac really has BMW covered with its mainstream 2-liter

00:54 turbo engine.

00:56 In the coupe version, it has a little bit more turbo boost from 14 to 18 PSI, which

01:01 raises the output to 272 horsepower and 295 pound-feet, way more than BMW offers.

01:07 It also weighs less, so the performance should be much better.

01:10 The suspension offers magnetic ride control and a wider front and rear track than the

01:14 sedan, so we're expecting great things on the dynamic front.

01:18 As with the sedan, of course, you can also get a manual transmission, a 321-horsepower

01:22 V6, or all-wheel drive.

01:25 I guess the only problem I see for this car is I'd hate to be a Cadillac salesman and

01:29 try and sell ELRs, which are probably going to cost about twice as much, and they're about

01:33 the same size, and they're also a coupe.

01:35 But that's not my problem.
