00:28 They designed this car to be a car that somebody that
00:31 appreciates the experience of driving would enjoy.
00:34 It's just really well balanced.
00:37 The car's a fun car to mod, a fun car to drive,
00:41 and the possibilities are endless.
00:43 I'm Caitlin Hall with Continental Tire,
00:50 and we are here today at the streets of Willow Springs
00:53 for the 86 Showdown.
00:55 The reason this week that we are here
00:58 is to be able to bring our tires to this enthusiast market
01:01 and give us feedback.
01:02 So feedback today has been very positive,
01:05 and the questions they've been asking
01:07 is the exact things that our engineers need to hear
01:09 and to help them develop this tire to make it exactly what
01:13 these drivers are looking for for the track.
01:15 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:24 Car's a fun car to mod, a fun car to drive.
01:27 I just upgraded to the Jackson Racing C38 Charger.
01:31 Had it installed, and we had it tuned and everything
01:34 ready to go in less than a week.
01:37 I'm driving my 2013 Scion FR-S. It's
01:39 running an Edelbrock supercharger.
01:41 We have the delicious Tuning Flex Fuel Kit.
01:44 I run a combination of E85 and 91 octane fuel.
01:46 We pretty much have white lines, complete catalog
01:48 on the vehicle, sway bars, all the bushings,
01:51 adjustable lower control arms.
01:53 I'm actually running a set of our prototype coilover
01:56 due to be released next year.
01:58 I'm here to have fun.
01:59 I'm here to hang out with a lot of the great drivers
02:01 that I know and love.
02:02 But no, the track itself is great.
02:04 I did location.
02:04 I did two hours from home.
02:06 You can't beat that, right?
02:07 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:10 We're from San Francisco Bay Area.
02:12 It was about a seven-hour drive with Boeing coming down here.
02:16 We actually got here pretty late.
02:18 We got to the hotel at around 3.
02:20 We got a couple hours of sleep.
02:22 Everything is working out so far.
02:24 Right now, we're running stock motors.
02:26 Basic bolt-ons, LSD, OSK, Kusko control arms,
02:30 and the craftwork, supercharger.
02:33 Personally, I drive a lot of FR cars.
02:37 It's just the design with the weight distribution
02:40 and the rear-wheel drive factor.
02:43 The chassis is very nice.
02:44 It's very forgiving, and it can hold a lot of power.
02:47 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:49 This is my first time out here at Streets of Willow,
02:51 and I wasn't exactly sure what was going to be a good setup.
02:54 All I did was just leave it how it was.
02:56 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:59 There's a whole bunch of stuff that's been done to this car.
03:04 Nothing except for the upper rear control arms.
03:06 There's stock on the suspension, full exhaust, built motor.
03:09 Done some aero, including some parts from APR.
03:12 It's doing really well.
03:13 These Continental 340 treadwear extreme contact tires
03:16 are actually doing quite well.
03:19 I'm not experiencing much at all understeer,
03:21 and the oversteer behavior is really good.
03:23 Really nice progressive brake play.
03:25 The car's being very, very well behaved.
03:26 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:29 [ENGINE REVVING]
03:33 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:35 Well, the 86, to me, is a pretty neutral car.
03:41 With our turbo kit, too, we get that extra power
03:44 to be able to put down the use all the suspension
03:46 and be able to use the car for what I think it was originally
03:50 intended with the extra power.
03:51 It's pretty fun to see how everybody kind of matches up
03:54 against each other.
03:55 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:58 You definitely have a lot of power to put to the ground.
04:07 And the tires have actually done surprisingly well
04:10 for a street tire.
04:11 The durability is more than I expected,
04:13 and the initial grip earlier in the day
04:15 was actually really impressive.
04:17 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:20 [ENGINE REVVING]
04:23 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:25 I'm driving a Scion FR-S. It's a show car,
04:28 but they've converted a few things
04:30 to make it a track-ready vehicle.
04:33 They had airbags on it before, and they just
04:36 swapped on some KW V3s.
04:38 So that's a tremendous help for the track,
04:42 having that full coilover.
04:44 This isn't my first time in streets of Willow.
04:46 I have quite a bit of seat time here.
04:48 I started driving here four years ago.
04:51 It's not my favorite track, but it's
04:53 a good track to test handling.
04:57 The tires have been surprisingly very nice.
05:00 I'm very impressed with them.
05:01 For such a high tread wear, they have a lot of grip,
05:04 and they've been really consistent and progressive
05:07 throughout the whole day.
05:10 So these are great for enthusiasts
05:12 that are going to have the regular, everyday cars
05:15 and want to go out and have a good track day.
05:18 It has similar compounds to what we have run in the past
05:22 on our Extreme Contact DW.
05:24 We have stiffened the sidewall with higher apexes
05:27 to improve the sidewall handling,
05:30 and should help improve, especially in the curves,
05:32 to really get the best performance out of it.
05:35 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:37 We try to participate in as many of these events
05:43 that are proposed to us.
05:44 It all started when-- because most of us in the office
05:46 are grassroots ourselves, enthusiasts.
05:49 So it's just something we like to participate in and keep
05:51 it going, because the sport cannot die.
05:53 It won't be a happy place if we don't
05:56 have grassroots motorsports.
05:57 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:00 It's not easy being the first time out on the track.
06:10 A number of the people out here driving today are my friends,
06:13 and I'm having a great time with them.
06:15 I'm managing to hang in.
06:16 They're pretty good in the field,
06:18 so I'm pretty excited about that.
06:19 The other thing that's kind of interesting about my car
06:21 is that it's actually an automatic, not a manual car.
06:23 So the automatic's doing some work out here today,
06:25 and I'm pretty pleased with how I'm doing.
06:29 Today, I'm just out here to have fun, put some fast times down,
06:32 maybe beat my personal best.
06:34 This is my first time driving a rear-wheel drive.
06:36 It's totally different.
06:37 The lines are different.
06:38 I do like the oversteer rather than the understeer,
06:41 but it feels good.
06:43 I really like the 86 platform.
06:46 I'm a huge rear-wheel drive fan.
06:49 I have an S2000 background, so being in the 86
06:52 feels pretty at home.
06:54 Really forgiving on the oversteer,
06:57 although it does let the back end out.
06:59 [MUSIC PLAYING]
07:02 Competition is very tough.
07:09 A lot of fast cars and drivers.
07:11 I think two seconds would be a lot to shave,
07:13 but maybe a second.
07:14 That would be my goal for today.
07:16 We will have to step it up.
07:17 There's a lot of competition, a lot of very, very experienced
07:28 drivers out here.
07:30 Most of them are going faster than I am,
07:32 which I'm actually comfortable with.
07:33 I'm out here to have a good time,
07:35 take advantage of a lot of the benefits of Super Street
07:38 and content that they're offering us.
07:40 The cars are performing great.
07:41 They're really holding up to the heat.
07:42 I would say other tires probably wouldn't be holding up as well.
07:46 I was really hoping to podium today for the team,
07:50 so hopefully we made it.
07:51 I would love to be back out next year
07:53 if there's another competition.
07:55 And if they need another driver, then I'm
07:57 more than willing to come out.
07:58 It's always a good time.
07:59 I think we did pretty good.
08:07 We hit a 124 in session two.
08:10 It felt great.
08:11 Yeah.
08:11 We put a lot of hard work on my team.
08:14 So everybody is happy.
08:16 We can do it all over again as long
08:18 as we can take first place again.
08:19 It paid off.
08:21 If they have another 86 showdown next year,
08:24 we're definitely going to enter.
