00:00 Hey everyone, my name's Trent McGee, I'm a freelance writer for 4WheelOnOffroad magazine,
00:08 I actually write their monthly tech column, and I've done a few other articles here and
00:13 there but I just wanted to introduce you guys to my latest project which is a 1964 Scout
00:20 80.
00:22 It's got quite a lot of character to it and that's exactly why I bought it.
00:27 Now those that know me know that I am not, not an international fan, I have never been,
00:33 and so it's pretty ironic that I now own this fine specimen of vintage American iron.
00:41 Things got a lot of character, it's pretty cool and that's part of the reason I bought
00:44 it.
00:45 The patina is just something that you can't fake, I mean look at this, that's only years
00:50 of exposure to the sun and stuff can do.
00:54 This is, as far as I know, if it's not an original Arizona car, it's been in Arizona
00:58 for a very long time, that would explain the presence of sheet metal below the belt line
01:04 and stuff.
01:05 And it's actually not in bad shape, it does have some cancer that we'll get into a little
01:08 bit but it's obviously been worked its entire life, there's lots of little dings and dents
01:15 and stuff like that.
01:16 It's not a very good restoration candidate so that's again one of the reasons that I
01:21 bought it.
01:22 You know, I mean stuff like that is maybe not particularly difficult to repair if it
01:27 was just here or there but it's got dings like this all over the car.
01:33 So yeah, interior is pretty solid and straightforward, it's not a single gauge works, which is pretty
01:39 cool.
01:40 Basic bench seat, the previous owner actually recovered it at some point with just some
01:45 burlap.
01:46 Down here you'll see one of the little bits of cancer, the previous owner actually did
01:52 some sheet metal work to it, just kind of zip screwed some hardware sheet metal to the
01:57 floor, we're going to have to do something about that.
02:00 The seat is actually just kind of held in by faith so obviously something else to address.
02:06 One of the cool things on this car, you'll notice here, if you look at that, that is
02:11 the window regulator crank and it broke at some point in the past but somebody did some
02:18 really cool farm based fixes and fixed it with some strap and some screws.
02:23 It's actually been there for a really long time so I'm going to call that fix good.
02:29 What else?
02:30 Oh yeah, there's another spot here, again with the farm based fix, a weld pop at some
02:36 point and so they fixed it there and that looks totally legit to me.
02:42 So like I said, character all around.
02:44 The bed floor is actually in really nice shape, believe it or not, but not so much with the
02:50 floorboards.
02:51 This is actually what the passenger side floorboard looks like and as you can see, you can actually
02:56 see some ground here and there so that's going to need to be addressed and actually this
03:01 is what's left of the original driver side floor.
03:04 So obviously some work to do.
03:08 Under the hood, let's see if I can do this one handed, is a fire breathing slant 4.
03:17 All original.
03:18 It actually does run.
03:19 Runs pretty decent but it also makes hardly any power at all.
03:24 I think there's small engines that make more power than this thing.
03:29 But it does run.
03:30 The previous owner treated it to a coat of paint but didn't really bother scraping off
03:35 or degreasing the engine before he did it so it's kind of flaking off.
03:40 Leaks like a sieve but like I said, it does start and run.
03:42 Oh yeah, this is the gas can which is a converted water jug which is held to the core support
03:50 with twine.
03:52 Fuel comes out of there, goes over there, gets pumped via that electric fuel pump into
03:57 the one barrel carburetor.
03:59 Ironically, this thing came with two air cleaners but not a one of them was installed on the
04:06 actual engine.
04:08 The alternator was about ready to fall off when I bought it so I tightened it back up.
04:13 Other than that, I mean, there's a lot of potential here.
04:15 There's actually quite a bit of room.
04:17 The plan is to put some sort of late model LS drivetrain in it and stuff but other than
04:25 that it's big and heavy and more than a little ugly but it should be pretty cool.
04:31 So it comes with new tires.
04:34 The four wheel drive does work, it just doesn't work well.
04:38 It's got a T90 transmission that's on its last legs and a Dana 18 transfer case which
04:44 there's absolutely nothing wrong with either of those things.
04:47 It's just not going to work with what I have planned for it.
04:50 So anyway, let us know what you think.
04:54 I think it's sexy but I'm also a little crazy.
04:58 So anyway, thanks for watching and keep an eye out on 4Wheeler.com for further updates
05:06 as we get into the build.
