00:00 On this episode of Modified, we're in Atlanta, Georgia.
00:03 We're checking out Formula Drift.
00:04 Hit it, Mike!
00:05 [ENGINE REVVING]
00:07 [ENGINE REVVING]
00:10 [ENGINE REVVING]
00:12 [TIRES SCREECHING]
00:29 [TIRES SCREECHING]
00:35 [TIRES SCREECHING]
00:37 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:43 So we're just outside Atlanta, Georgia,
00:59 at Kobu Works Drift Shop, checking out two of the cars
01:01 we're going to be using for our competition.
01:03 Usually, we go to two different shops,
01:05 but Kobu Works is the heart of Atlanta drifting,
01:07 and it looks like they'll have everything that we need.
01:09 We're here with co-owner Tyler Klain.
01:13 But tell us about your shop. You've got a lot of cool cars here.
01:16 So this one, '91 S13 right-hand drive.
01:20 The queen.
01:21 Yeah, the queen model.
01:22 Four-wheel steering setup.
01:23 And she's in A, but she's got hicus, so she's awkward to drive.
01:27 It looks fun, but, I mean, this thing.
01:29 '91 Toyota Cressida, about 300 at the wheels.
01:32 Emissions-free, so you can put anything under the hood and be all right.
01:35 You know, you set up a car properly,
01:37 you shouldn't have a hard time passing a sniffer.
01:39 Well, let's go check out your drift car.
01:41 All right.
01:42 This is the third Coupe Shell that I've run.
01:46 My first one, bought in, like, 2006.
01:49 Picked it up because I hated 240s in the beginning.
01:52 But I wanted a car to learn how to drift,
01:54 and I was like, "Oh, if I don't care about the car,
01:56 I won't care if I hit anything or mess it up."
01:58 You start driving them long enough, you start to fall in love with the car.
02:01 Now it's a full-built motor, top to bottom.
02:04 Tomei 2.2 stroker kit, full work heads,
02:07 EFR 6758 intake manifold, exhaust manifold, the whole nine.
02:11 So how much power does it put down, then?
02:13 It's a 430 wheel, 420 torque at 17 pounds,
02:17 with a full boost by 3,400 RPM.
02:20 Okay, so it's nice and peppy.
02:21 Yes, it is.
02:22 This is the car that Matt is going to use for the event,
02:25 because I'm about, like, a foot away from the pedals.
02:27 I can barely reach the pedals.
02:28 Yeah, so it's going to be interesting.
02:30 I think you got it, though, dude.
02:31 You're an awesome driver, so you should have no problem.
02:34 There's all these cool cars. I was getting kind of tempted,
02:36 so we asked Tyler if we could take this Corolla out back
02:38 and do some donuts, and he said, "Sure."
02:40 So we're going to go have some fun.
02:42 Make a bunch of noise.
02:44 Maybe some tire smoke.
02:45 No power steering!
02:50 [Engine revving]
02:54 [Tires squealing]
02:57 I know, it was pretty sick. It's fun.
03:22 I mean, it's kind of tight back here,
03:24 but small car and, you know, powers knows what he's doing.
03:27 And I think he just said that was the first time
03:29 that he can remember that he's driven a Corolla,
03:31 so that was kind of sick.
03:32 But yeah, it was fun, a lot of fun.
03:34 It's been fun hanging out with the guys at Kogru Works
03:37 since they have just about everything a JDM head could ever want.
03:40 We got to see the car that I'm going to use in the competition,
03:42 but Jeff's car, which is an LS3-powered 350Z,
03:45 is actually in competition right now.
03:47 We'll take a look at it a little later this episode.
03:50 So we're going to head out to Formula D,
03:51 but first, let's check in with Sam Dew in our Project Civic.
03:54 On this update of Project Civic,
03:58 we're at Hondata to meet up with the owner, Doug McMillan,
04:01 to find out a little bit about his shop and where he came from.
04:04 So in the '90s, my business partner, Derek Stephens, and myself,
04:08 we found that people really weren't doing much
04:11 and they didn't know a lot about what Hondas could do
04:15 and what we're capable of doing.
04:17 So we try and make sure that we are very clear
04:20 in how we explain things and what the engines are capable of doing
04:24 and the consequences of your tuning,
04:26 what you can do, what you can't do, and things like that.
04:29 So I hope that we can share a lot of what we've learned
04:33 with the new 10th generation Turbo Civic with you in our tuning today.
04:37 We're back at World Motorsports.
04:39 In order to flash the car, Doug had a hookup to an OBD2 port and his laptop.
04:44 And it's currently programming.
04:46 You see the red flashing light?
04:47 That's telling you that the program is going from the laptop
04:50 through to the engine and computer.
04:52 So the entire process takes about 5 minutes.
04:54 So now that Doug has just installed the flash pro on our Project Civic,
04:57 we're going to actually see how much more power it's going to make on a dyno.
05:00 So let's go check it out.
05:02 So after our ECU upgrade, we ended up with 168 horsepower at 5,800 RPM
05:08 and 201 foot-pounds of torque at 2,900 RPM.
05:12 That's over 4 horsepower and almost 30 foot-pounds of torque more than our baseline.
05:18 Well, we didn't quite hit the 20% peak power increase that I predicted,
05:22 but we did get a 20% increase in peak torque,
05:25 and we got a fairly massive increase in torque right through the driving range.
05:29 We picked up about 10 peak horsepower,
05:32 but I have a feeling that with the change of intake and a change of an exhaust,
05:37 we may well see more top-end horsepower.
05:40 But as far as driving experience is concerned,
05:43 all of the increases in where you spend 90% to 98% of your driving time.
05:48 So I'm excited.
05:50 Check in next time when we continue to modify this 10th Gen Civic Hatchback.
05:54 We finally made it to Formula D,
06:05 and sure enough, it's everything a drift fan could ever want.
06:08 It's crazy action, the loudest, smokiest, fastest sideways racing in the world.
06:13 First things first, let's go meet up with a couple of the guys that helped make this event happen.
06:21 We got Jared Deanda, the voice of Formula Drift with us.
06:28 You've been here since the sport started.
06:30 Tell us a little bit how it's evolved over the years.
06:32 Yeah, 2004, this very track, Road Atlanta.
06:35 It's the womb of drifting in the States.
06:37 It used to be Alex Pfeiffer and a Toyota Corolla going against Sam Hubanet and Dodge Pfeiffer.
06:41 We saw you come into the scene, brought your own attitude.
06:45 But now look at it, 14 years later, the evolution of the cars, the technology, the driving.
06:51 Look at how many countries are being represented.
06:53 So the overall evolution isn't just the cars, it's a lot of eyeballs.
06:57 Because now you look at the format, we've got different videos being made.
07:01 It's on TV, it's on live stream, it's in magazines.
07:04 The introduction of Instagram and social media, so if it's Twitter, all these things.
07:08 There's just a lot of eyeballs and the cars are just gnarly.
07:11 You can't deny how awesome it is.
07:13 But just the sport has completely evolved and it's not stopping anytime soon, which is even better.
07:18 So we're here with Chris Forsberg, three-time Formula Drift champion.
07:22 He's definitely one that inspires, I think, pretty much the whole drifting world.
07:26 Thanks, man.
07:27 We like doing what we do, right?
07:29 Drifting is all about having fun and expressing yourself via car.
07:32 I say that drifting for me is the most fun that you can have in four wheels.
07:36 So Chris is in a new car this year that he's developing.
07:39 My new build for 2017 is still a Nissan 370Z, but we actually went back to the V6 that originally came in the car.
07:46 And with that, it obviously has a twin turbo package to get that extra power to keep up with these big supercharged V8s that are out here.
07:53 And for the past 11 years, I've been running a full Nissan V8 engine, which has won us three championships, as you said.
08:01 But yeah, that package, I love it. It's great.
08:03 But we're looking for something different.
08:05 And with the technology that's coming out now with turbo applications, I've always wanted to get that factory engine back into that chassis.
08:12 And it's crazy to see the history of you developing it.
08:15 First, it was what, like 400 horsepower?
08:17 Yeah, when we first started, it was basically stock, about 400.
08:20 And yeah, it's just been a little bit more, a little bit more, a little bit more.
08:23 And now we're up over 1,000 horsepower.
08:25 And they're rowdy. They're fun.
08:27 Rowdy as hell.
08:28 [MUSIC PLAYING]
08:32 [ENGINE REVVING]
08:58 Just like we thought, yesterday was crazy.
09:01 It was a huge smoke show filled with wild fans, fast cars, and a ton of horsepower.
09:06 But now it's on to day two, and it's time for Jeff and I to compete.
09:12 The goal of the competition, using three judges and several cars that we've teamed up with, is to see who can drive the best tandem and put out the biggest show of smoke.
09:20 So without further ado, let's go check out Jeff's 350Z and get the competition started.
09:26 [ENGINE REVVING]
09:28 So how do you think these things compare?
09:30 This is probably 530 at the wheels versus 430 at the wheels.
09:35 And tons of torque versus decent torque for an SR, but LS, so huge difference.
09:42 Yeah, well, it's going to be a fun day either way.
09:44 Oh, yeah, it'll definitely be fun.
09:45 Took the Coruwerks 350Z out for a couple laps.
09:50 First lap was super good.
09:52 This car grips, handles really well.
09:54 Second lap, took it out, drove it a little bit harder, and then came off track and ran into some engine harness issues.
10:01 Coruwerks fixed the engine harness and then figured out that there was an oiling issue.
10:05 So unfortunately, I'm not able to run this car.
10:07 It's a bummer because I felt really good in it.
10:09 I have a 350Z at home.
10:11 But I'm going to hop in the SR-powered S13.
10:14 It's going to be a little bit difficult because obviously Tyler and Matt are like six feet tall.
10:19 I'm 5'5".
10:21 But I'm going to see what works and try it out.
10:24 [MUSIC]
10:32 All right, so we're starting our friendly team competition here, tandem competition.
10:36 We have a professional Formula Drift driver of the gum-out FR-S, Ryan Turek.
10:41 GT86.
10:42 Or 86.
10:43 Sorry, guys.
10:44 And then we have Brian Eggert, who is also a Formula Drift judge, and Ryan Lontane.
10:50 So we have some really high credentials here that will really nitpick all these tandem runs.
10:55 And we'll see how it goes.
10:56 I think Matt's going to do pretty good.
10:58 We'll see if he still has some Formula D skills left.
11:01 Yeah, I think he does.
11:02 [CAR ENGINE REVVING]
11:28 So the third driver forgot to leave the line.
11:31 [CAR ENGINE REVVING]
11:51 The two lead drivers were great.
11:52 That third car was not even out of the pits yet.
11:55 [LAUGHTER]
11:56 We were initiating a run.
11:57 Yeah, I mean, he caught up at the end, so we got a little bit--
11:59 Yeah.
12:00 I think you already won, dude.
12:01 [LAUGHTER]
12:02 Oh, thanks, bro.
12:03 Appreciate that.
12:04 I don't know, though.
12:05 We got a second run.
12:06 We'll see how it goes.
12:07 [CAR ENGINE REVVING]
12:11 He's straight.
12:12 Yeah.
12:13 Let's race.
12:15 Oh!
12:16 [CHEERING]
12:18 OK.
12:19 [CAR ENGINE REVVING]
12:45 [CHEERING]
12:54 Watching that, Matt could jump into a car
12:56 and jump right into FTO.
12:57 Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
12:58 It looked that comfortable.
12:59 Well, that was fun.
13:00 Let's see what Jeff's got.
13:02 Oh, he's got four cars.
13:04 [CHEERING]
13:14 That looks great.
13:15 That looks great.
13:16 Wow.
13:17 [CAR ENGINE REVVING]
13:41 That was great.
13:42 [APPLAUSE]
13:44 He didn't run tandem as well as you did.
13:47 But his team, overall--
13:48 But his team just killed you, dude.
13:50 Style-wise, you can't beat that.
13:51 His team would have killed you.
13:52 [CAR ENGINE REVVING]
13:57 He's got it.
13:58 [CAR ENGINE REVVING]
14:01 [CHEERING]
14:03 Get in there.
14:04 [CAR ENGINE REVVING]
14:07 [INAUDIBLE]
14:10 Tighten it up.
14:11 That looks good.
14:12 That looks good.
14:13 [CAR ENGINE REVVING]
14:19 That is beautiful.
14:22 That looks really good.
14:26 [CHEERING]
14:29 Oh!
14:30 [CAR ENGINE REVVING]
14:32 First one was so great.
14:34 You may have lost.
14:35 I know I lost.
14:36 I know I lost.
14:38 Oh, yeah.
14:40 Don't sweat it.
14:41 Our first one was solid, dude.
14:42 They took me out, so I lost.
14:44 Sorry, man.
14:45 I mean, your lead run was-- or your chase run was insane.
14:48 I was like, wow, why is that dude still
14:50 driving in competitive drifting?
14:52 But at the end of the day, I don't care if I won.
14:55 I had fun with everyone.
14:57 That's what drifting is all about.
14:58 Yeah, I mean, we had a really good time.
15:00 We had a blast.
15:02 You know, win or lose, it was a really fun weekend.
15:05 And, you know, that's what drifting's all about.
15:07 [MUSIC PLAYING]
15:10 [MUSIC PLAYING]
15:13 [MUSIC PLAYING]
15:16 [MUSIC PLAYING]
15:19 (whooshing)
15:21 you
