00:00 Welcome back.
00:05 The top guys at Original Parts Group are putting a build team to the test, allowing them to
00:10 restore a '68 GTO.
00:13 Interesting thing about this GTO, obviously it's a '68, and for anybody that remembers
00:17 General Motors was on strike in '68, so '68 cars are always a little bit of an interesting
00:22 project.
00:24 About 78,000 of these hard tops were made.
00:27 The interesting thing about the '68 GTO was they had gone to a urethane nose and they
00:32 had gone to hideaway headlights, which were really, really neat.
00:34 They were really starting to move into some really neat things.
00:37 Then, of course, it led the way for the Judge coming down the road in '69, '70s.
00:43 Back with the build, Joel's checking off his list.
00:46 We finished up all the brake lines and stuff, and we dynamatted the floor and everything.
00:52 We're going to install the motor and the tranny and get the front miscellaneous on the front.
00:57 Then go from there.
00:58 We're going to hit this manifold with some heat protection from VHT and keep it nice
01:04 and brand new looking.
01:06 The spray is going on one very special powertrain.
01:10 It's a 400 Pontiac.
01:12 Butlers did the motor work, did it complete as you can see it.
01:18 It's sporting its own set of cool colors.
01:21 We use a duple color high engine paint, and it's heat resistant to all of it and stuff,
01:26 and it really holds up and lasts a long time.
01:30 Okay, time to install.
01:32 But first, there has to be a union.
01:34 Well, we're going to get the motor and the tranny bolted together.
01:39 That transmission is an art car 200, ready to meet that 400 Pontiac.
01:45 We always put our motors and trannies in in one piece.
01:49 We never try to set the motor in and then put the tranny underneath.
01:53 We just put it together, stuff it in the hole and go.
01:58 True GOAT fans know how this all began.
02:01 In 1964, John DeLorean shoved a 389 V8 into a Tempest, creating a legendary car.
02:09 A couple of guys, it goes right in.
02:13 Nice job.
02:14 You didn't have six fingers going.
02:20 Hey, it's a muscle car.
02:22 You got to work for it.
02:30 Even though most of this ride is based off the original factory specs, there's no doubt
02:35 it will handle better than any car made in 1968.
02:39 Build the car to its original look and appearance, but there's a few areas you want to upgrade
02:45 always, you know, in steering and brakes.
02:48 Let's just face it, we can make them a better driver, but they can still look like they
02:51 did in '68.
02:52 Got it.
02:53 Yep.
02:54 What do you need?
02:55 You got a few more inches there?
02:56 Yeah, we got plenty.
03:01 Pontiac first tried calling the car the Wide Track Tiger, and later, the Great One.
03:06 Hot Rodders called it the GOAT.
03:08 Whatever it was called, by 1967, the GTO was the sales king of Detroit.
03:13 Looking good, it's in the hole.
03:15 Ready for the trans mount.
03:19 With the engine now in, it's time to strap it all up, and one thing is clear, this car
03:23 is only a few pieces short of being a certified, reborn GTO, a Pontiac that's about to drive
03:29 out of a time machine.
03:31 Our hearts truly in for the original and the pureness of the car.
03:35 Okay, my bracket's good.
03:37 Is your bracket good?
03:38 Yeah, mine is good.
03:39 All right, the motor's in, everything went good, and on to the next part.
03:51 It's a long list.
03:52 We're going to put on the alternator, the power steering, get the pulley on, start working
03:57 on fitting up the fan, and push on.
04:01 Pushing on is all about finishing the fun stuff.
04:03 See it happen when we return with more Hot Rod TV.
04:06 (whooshing)
