00:32 - Top Truck Challenge 2015, I'm with head judge,
00:34 Toby Lavender, he's gonna tell us about the technical
00:37 and safety inspection that we've gotta go through
00:39 each year, Toby.
00:40 - Yeah Stan, so this is one of the most important steps
00:42 to this process for us to do.
00:44 We take every single rig and go over it
00:46 with a fine tooth comb from front to back
00:48 and we look for all kinds of safety features.
00:51 We print clear rules for the drivers and co-drivers
00:54 before they get here and we make sure
00:55 that every single one of them is in place.
00:57 - He has been cleared.
00:58 - After a nail biting inspection by the judges and crew,
01:01 it's off to Robin Stover for the official drivers meeting
01:05 and now it's time to meet this year's competitors
01:07 and their trucks.
01:09 - My name's Jeremy Brown and this is my '72 Blazer.
01:11 - Kimberly Gray from Amity, Oregon,
01:14 driving my 1975 GMC Purple Minion.
01:17 - Ryan Agin from Hollister, California.
01:19 I'm driving a 1983 Chevy K10.
01:22 - I'm Mike Jaskolski from Laramie, Wyoming.
01:24 I drive a 1976 K5 Blazer we call Thumper.
01:28 - Okay, my name's Adam Furlong.
01:30 I bought this '79 Scout off the original owner, Bone Stock.
01:34 - Christopher Bowman, I'm from Mountain Home, Idaho
01:36 and I'm wheeling a 1988 GMC Jimmy.
01:39 - Eric Cam from Red Deer, Alberta
01:41 and I'm driving a 1985 Chevy 3/4 ton.
01:44 - My name's Jason Moon.
01:45 I'm from Medford, Oregon with my '91 K5 Blazer.
01:49 - My name is Jake Brazier.
01:50 I'm from Choice, Lansing, Saskatchewan.
01:52 This was the first vehicle I ever purchased.
01:54 It was originally an '85 4Runner.
01:58 - Dan Osterhout from Alberta, Canada
02:00 and I'm driving a 1970-ish Chevy
02:03 and I'm here at Top Truck Challenge 2015.
02:05 - The tow test.
02:09 Object is to get a 40,500 pound vehicle
02:11 up a 144 foot hill and do it without breaking.
02:14 The object of the tow test is to unseat this behemoth,
02:18 this M923A2 from its position of rest.
02:22 We'll also score each rig by distance
02:25 and if they can cross the finish line, extra points.
02:28 All right, Jason, since you're the first up,
02:30 any thoughts you've got
02:31 as you're starting this competition off?
02:34 - Keep it in one piece before we get to the top
02:36 to finish the rest of the events.
02:37 (horn honking)
02:40 - Oh!
02:41 (engine revving)
02:55 (horn honking)
02:58 - Jason, so it looked like your rear end was not spinning.
03:00 What's up?
03:01 - I don't know.
03:02 I'll have to take a look at it.
03:03 Might've broke something.
03:05 - Jeremy Brown.
03:06 Now you have been here a lot in Hollister Hills
03:09 but you've probably never sat in that seat.
03:12 Any jitters in your belly right now?
03:15 - No, not too bad.
03:16 - All right, boys, you got your seat belts on?
03:18 - Yeah.
03:19 - Good luck, man.
03:20 On your mark, get set.
03:21 (horn honking)
03:24 (engine revving)
03:27 (horn honking)
03:35 - What do you think of that tow test?
03:36 - It was awesome.
03:37 Had a little too much bouncing.
03:39 - All right, next competitor is Mike
03:44 and his K5 Blazer named Thumper.
03:46 Mike Jazz, right?
03:47 - You betcha.
03:48 - All right, so I just heard some nitrous purging.
03:50 What's going on under the hood?
03:52 - We're gonna try a 100 shot in this
03:53 and get a little bit more horsepower, get up this hill.
03:56 - I hope.
03:57 Any change up with the tires?
03:59 - Yeah, we got 15 in the front, 12 in the rear.
04:02 (horn honking)
04:06 - It's off to a full, smooth start.
04:08 Now he's into it.
04:10 He's got a good pull going.
04:17 Whoa.
04:18 All right, Mike, that was an incredible run.
04:20 Did it run as smooth
04:21 as you thought it was going to?
04:22 - Nah, we had a little nitrous pop.
04:24 I don't think we had enough pressure in our nitrous bottle.
04:26 - How did it feel in the cab?
04:27 - Felt great.
04:28 I goofed up, I tried to work the third gear.
04:30 I should've left there in second, just let it eat.
04:33 - All right, we're with Eric Cam.
04:34 Now you're not running a doubler.
04:36 You're just doing a 496, is that correct?
04:39 - All right, we got a 496.
04:40 We got a Northwest Fab under drive.
04:42 - Eric Cam gets into it.
04:45 He's got a slight stumble at the beginning.
04:47 Now he's onto it.
04:51 Hitting the rev limiter.
04:52 Sounds like he grabbed a different gear.
04:56 And that's all she's got.
04:58 All right, Eric, did you shift gears in the middle of that?
05:02 - Yeah, I downshifted.
05:03 I started in second just to see,
05:05 but the pass was giving us a little bit of issues,
05:07 so I downshifted first and went for it.
05:11 - Are you pleased at all with that run?
05:12 - I think we might've snapped an axle, so not really.
05:15 - All right, so any strategies to get up the hill?
05:17 - Honestly, we're just going to let the truck do the work.
05:19 We hooked it up where the suspension will do it
05:21 the best we can.
05:22 - Kimberly walks into it gently, and then she hits it hard.
05:27 Oh, she's gotten some backfire going.
05:30 She's trying to work through it.
05:32 Just not quite the wheel spin that we had.
05:38 You are no stranger to Hollister Hills
05:47 and no stranger to Top Truck Challenge.
05:49 You were an alternate last year.
05:51 You haven't changed up the truck a whole lot.
05:52 Did you do any mods to the engine?
05:55 - It's a whole new engine.
05:55 It's actually a 2005 LQ96 liter.
05:58 It's probably about 100, 150 more horsepower
06:00 than what I had, so I definitely have more power
06:03 for this event, just if I can get it to the ground.
06:05 - All right, Ryan, that looked really smooth.
06:09 You didn't get any hop or bounce, which was really good,
06:12 but it didn't seem like a strong pull.
06:13 What were your thoughts?
06:14 - I probably should have picked a little bit lower gear,
06:16 a little bit more traction than I thought,
06:19 but what can you do?
06:20 It looks like it's not broken.
06:21 That's the best thing I can ask for right now.
06:23 - Daniel Oysterhout.
06:24 - Osterhout.
06:25 - Osterhout, okay.
06:27 I'm putting too much accent in there.
06:29 You've got a 427 under the hood.
06:30 How much horsepower are you putting out?
06:32 - About 550.
06:33 - 550?
06:35 You gonna do any shifting on this?
06:36 - Nope, first gear all the way.
06:38 - So he's starting off pretty smooth,
06:44 slowly picking up speed.
06:46 Very little bounce.
06:47 That front end is tight.
06:48 That was a good pull.
06:56 All right, Dan, that looked really, really smooth.
07:00 I mean, no stutter, no stammer,
07:03 no bounce whatsoever almost.
07:05 Were you pleased?
07:06 - Absolutely, love the suspension.
07:08 - It was awesome.
07:09 It was nailed down.
07:10 I think you did a good job.
07:11 - Absolutely.
07:12 - All right, Adam Furlong here.
07:14 Once again, he's using the Voodoo Rope.
07:16 He's just looping around.
07:17 He's not doing a double back like a snatch block.
07:20 He's just gonna use the dynamic properties of the rope
07:24 to give him a little stretch.
07:25 He's got quite a different setup than everyone.
07:27 You're running the Cummins engine,
07:29 so a very heavy engine up front.
07:32 You're also running the Axel Tech axles.
07:34 How much do they weigh?
07:35 - They're about 1,300 pounds an axle.
07:38 - So we've got 2,600 pounds of unsprung weight
07:41 in axle alone, a very heavy Cummins up front.
07:44 Do you think that's gonna be your benefit in this event?
07:47 - I think so.
07:48 As long as the tranny and other parts hold up,
07:50 shouldn't have too many issues, I'm hoping.
07:52 - On your mark, get set.
07:55 (horn honking)
07:58 - He seems to be keeping it in low gear.
08:03 He's using the motor mostly.
08:05 Very nice pull.
08:06 Look at that go.
08:08 That's incredible.
08:11 Awesome.
08:13 Now that was an incredible pull.
08:15 I mean, it seemed like the weight in your axles,
08:17 unsprung weight, plus the torque and the diesel
08:20 seemed to pull you through.
08:20 You pleased with that?
08:21 - I'm pretty pleased.
08:23 - Could have gone any better.
08:24 - Maybe made it to the finish line.
08:27 - All right, we're with Jake Bracer here,
08:28 and his Toyota.
08:29 In your bio, you said the tow test
08:30 is your least favorite event because of your size.
08:34 So going into this knowing that you've got
08:37 10 times the weight behind you,
08:39 what's your strategy gonna be to get up the hill?
08:42 - Lots of gas.
08:43 (horn honking)
08:47 - Man, that didn't sound good.
08:52 - Okay, sounds like he's let go of his tranny.
09:04 There he goes.
09:05 He's back into it.
09:06 Oh, there goes his front end.
09:09 Something went.
09:10 Something's cut loose.
09:12 So once again, yeah, being outweighed by 10 times
09:16 his weight of his rig, he couldn't even get it
09:19 off the starting line and something let loose.
09:21 Poor guy, this was definitely not his event.
09:24 A quick, what let loose?
09:25 - I think the transfer case is broken.
09:27 - Christopher Bowman, you've got a big white Jimmy here.
09:37 You're putting out, how much horsepower out of that motor?
09:40 - Stock TBI, so like what, 100 maybe?
09:42 I'm not sure, it's not much.
09:44 We're gonna give it a hill.
09:45 - All right, Chris, you ready to do this?
09:45 You guys got your seat belts on in there?
09:47 - Yeah.
09:47 - All right, boys, give it a hill on your mark, get set, go.
09:50 (horn honking)
09:53 - Chris is hammered down right away.
09:56 He's in a really low gear
09:57 'cause he has very little tire spin.
09:59 And that engine is wrapped out.
10:02 Oh, he's got some bad bounce going.
10:06 Oh, and he let go some parts.
10:08 Hold it right there.
10:08 Okay, it's just his winch.
10:09 That's good.
10:10 What he has done, he had his winch strapping down
10:13 his front axle to try and minimize that bounce.
10:15 He's still got some bounce going.
10:17 And the power of that bounce just sheared
10:19 his roller fairlead right off.
10:21 Let's go talk to him.
10:22 All right, Chris, so you were trying to minimize the bounce.
10:25 You got a lot of bounce, so much bounce
10:27 that it ripped your roller fairlead right off.
10:29 You pleased with that, Ron?
10:31 - Hell yeah, I'm pleased with that, Ron.
10:32 That was a blast.
10:33 I can't wait to do it again.
10:34 Let's do it again.
10:36 - The tow test was taken by Adam and his Cole roller.
10:39 It was tight this year, but he pulled out ahead.
10:41 The frame twister, 20 minutes to get through this course,
10:47 30 second penalty for hitting a cone.
10:49 And if you hit your tire outside of one cone,
10:51 you're disqualified.
10:52 - Frame twister 2015, every year we want to make it
10:55 a little different to keep it fresh.
10:58 But this year we're starting them at the squeeze rocks,
11:01 right into the logs, which you know so well.
11:03 And then our root pile has been mired down in this mud
11:07 that's like concrete, so it ain't moving.
11:09 After this, we've got a great surprise for them.
11:12 They're into the culverts, but not the regular culverts
11:14 that you used to know.
11:16 These ones have been mangled and mixed with tires.
11:19 Tires are really slick when they're wet, plus they give.
11:22 So as you're trying to get traction,
11:24 they're flopping around and moving.
11:25 So it makes it very difficult to get over there.
11:27 So the best way is through the air, airborne assault.
11:32 That's the frame twister 2015.
11:34 First up for the frame twisters,
11:36 Adam in his coal roller.
11:37 And he's first up into the squeeze rocks right away.
11:40 Now a little bit rear steer,
11:46 trying to work his way around that.
11:49 Nice move, he's into that hole.
11:50 He's up three, he's using some of that torque,
11:53 he's trying to get up over it.
11:54 And there he goes, he got traction.
11:56 Whoa, he almost fell out of bounds.
11:59 Oh, he lost it, crud, we have catastrophic failure.
12:05 All right, so as he was coming over that rock,
12:07 he lost his bogger.
12:08 His bogger went flat, it dragged,
12:11 then also he caught the back end,
12:13 pulled his radius arms and his control arms right out.
12:16 Total destruction.
12:17 Let's get him out of the way, next competitor.
12:19 Kim Grace next in the chute, right into the squeeze rocks.
12:23 Doing a great job getting around it.
12:24 Yeah, she's using the skid panels to skid around.
12:27 Nice, oh, but she falls into the hole,
12:29 but she's recovering nicely.
12:30 She makes that look easy.
12:32 Wow, that was awesome.
12:34 (tires screeching)
12:37 All right, so in the frame twister,
12:39 there's multiple strategies.
12:41 A lot of people have high air pressure in their tires
12:43 in hopes to bounce through the logs
12:45 without damaging their tires.
12:46 Or they may go low air pressure,
12:48 so they try and crawl over the logs.
12:50 And then of course, there's the third option,
12:52 winch, winch, winch.
12:54 They're going with number three.
12:55 They're through the logs and into the dry root pile.
12:58 (tires screeching)
13:03 (engine revving)
13:05 And with 442, they're out of the root pile,
13:08 looking at the culverts and a home run.
13:10 - Hey, sir, you know that tire?
13:11 Let's go.
13:12 (tires screeching)
13:17 (horn honking)
13:18 - You all right?
13:19 You all right?
13:20 Jeremy's been around Top Truck Challenge for many years,
13:23 but this is his first time in the driver's seat.
13:25 Now also, he's a standard transmission,
13:30 so he's not an automatic.
13:31 When you've got a clutch, sometimes, you know,
13:33 when you let off the clutch, it releases and you roll back.
13:36 So he didn't miss that, but he's able to salvage it.
13:39 So after quite a struggle in the squeeze rocks,
13:44 he's into the logs, but he's gonna play it safe
13:46 and winch his way through.
13:48 There he goes, there he goes.
13:54 He's made it.
13:55 Now he's into the culverts.
13:57 He's seeing the finish line.
14:00 He's anxious to get through this.
14:01 Nice, he's got that cone.
14:07 He maneuvers right by it.
14:09 Good job.
14:10 Great articulation.
14:11 He's out.
14:13 Oh, what a relief.
14:14 Ryan enters the frame twister.
14:17 Now he's familiar with this 'cause he's a local.
14:19 Let's see how well he plays this.
14:21 Little bit of sheet metal remodeling,
14:25 but yeah, he's just driving
14:26 like he's coming through his driveway.
14:29 Now to avoid any more damage
14:31 to his hydraulic steering components,
14:33 they've decided to winch out of the squeeze rocks.
14:36 That may be a good call.
14:37 So if anyone can make it through the logs without winching,
14:44 they're gonna have a great advantage in time.
14:47 Again, the speed of those winches is paramount
14:49 to get through these logs, keep a good time running.
14:52 He picks a little different line
14:55 than everyone else through the dry root pile.
14:57 He picked a far left-hand side,
15:00 far starting to angle it,
15:02 and then made it right through without any problems.
15:04 Now he's into the culverts.
15:05 He's wasting no time now,
15:07 making up some of the time he used up in the squeeze rocks.
15:10 Now this he's familiar with.
15:15 He's driven this before.
15:18 This hasn't changed,
15:18 so he's familiar with where to go and what line to pick.
15:21 And there he goes.
15:22 Wow, that was a good run.
15:25 Okay, Mike is in.
15:26 He's got that huge motor, 555.
15:30 He munches down on that rock.
15:33 His bumper's eating it for lunch.
15:36 And Mike Jazz enters in the log section
15:49 of the frame twister.
15:50 Let's see what he does.
15:51 Is he gonna hammer it?
15:53 Is he gonna try and crawl it?
15:55 (engine revving)
15:58 Excellent move.
16:09 And he's over his bridge line.
16:10 He's facing the right direction though.
16:12 A little more horsepower,
16:19 and he's over it.
16:21 Nice spot.
16:22 He's got to turn into it, straighten it out.
16:23 He's headed out of bounds.
16:25 Judge is watching him.
16:28 Boy, he barely makes it.
16:29 He almost went out of bounds on that turn.
16:32 Okay.
16:41 (laughing)
16:42 He's through.
16:43 What were your thoughts going through
16:44 that section there at the end?
16:46 - It was tough.
16:47 It was really tough.
16:48 Our winch kind of was giving out on us a little bit,
16:51 but we'll be all right.
16:53 That was fun, but it was tough.
16:56 - Eric Cam is next to test his metal
16:59 in the squeeze rock section of the frame twister.
17:02 He seems to be doing very well.
17:05 And wow, he gets through it
17:06 in I think the best time of the day.
17:09 Now, Cam is used to Canadian wheel,
17:12 and so he's used to water, mud, and log.
17:15 And he's gonna try bouncing through it Canadian style.
17:22 He's got the horsepower.
17:23 His motor seems to be stumbling a little bit,
17:26 but he's got a great run going so far.
17:28 He's into the culverts.
17:34 Oh, and stutters again.
17:51 (horn honks)
17:54 All right, Eric, you did not disappoint.
17:56 However, your motor was stumbling.
17:58 What's going on?
17:59 - Fast, man.
18:00 It's giving us issues all weekend.
18:01 It's been good for like three years,
18:02 and we drive 30 hours and it starts giving us grief.
18:07 So it is what it is, man.
18:08 - Christopher Bowman, the showman in his Jazzy Jimmy,
18:12 enters squeeze rock of the frame twister.
18:14 Now he's got those Axel Tech axles,
18:16 so he's got about 3,000 pounds of unsprung weight,
18:20 but he seems to be using it to his advantage.
18:23 Stout material.
18:24 He's only got a 350 powering it.
18:26 Let's see if he can get those Mickey Thompsons to hook up.
18:28 And look at that.
18:29 Look at that spread.
18:30 Incredible hookup.
18:32 Boy, those tires just grabbed onto that rock
18:34 and said, "You're mine."
18:37 Wow, look at that.
18:38 He's bouncing through.
18:40 Those Mickey Thompsons are taking it.
18:43 Oh, wait, something let go.
18:44 All right, so right there,
18:46 you can see right underneath the truck,
18:48 we've got a separation of the drive shaft in the rear.
18:50 He had a great run going, but then again,
18:52 once again, we were talking about weight
18:54 and a lot of energy and stress on the components.
18:56 So when he hit that log, drive shaft separated,
19:00 he's in two-wheel drive.
19:01 Let's see if he can get out.
19:03 Now in two-wheel drive, he tries the Culverts.
19:10 Let's see if he can get through here in two-wheel drive.
19:14 Oh, he's got to make one long pull to the finish line.
19:18 Okay, he's doing a great run.
19:19 He's seven minutes into it.
19:21 Under winch power, two-wheel drive.
19:23 He's actually making better time
19:25 than some of the other competitors.
19:27 And he crosses the finish line.
19:30 That is so cool.
19:32 Bowman the Showman, you do not disappoint.
19:36 That was an awesome show.
19:38 Now you did in better time than some competitors
19:42 in two-wheel drive.
19:44 How do you feel?
19:45 - Badass, man.
19:46 This is good stuff.
19:47 That guy right there, hauling the winch line,
19:50 running it for me, he's the man.
19:52 He got me through this.
19:53 - Tell us about your winch.
19:54 You're running dual motors
19:55 and they seem to be the new motors.
19:56 - We call it the Franken-winch.
19:58 It's been named a couple of six horsepower
20:00 Warren XP motors on a couple of gear trains.
20:02 Took a little bit to figure it out.
20:04 First time we tested it, it was right there.
20:05 Didn't know if it was going to explode
20:07 and launch the winch over the mountain
20:08 or whether it was going to pull this thing forward.
20:10 And it did exactly what I wanted it to.
20:12 I don't have much horsepower,
20:13 but the winch makes up for it.
20:14 - And Daniel charges into the slick rock section.
20:20 He's got smaller tires than most,
20:21 well balanced rig, Rockwell axles, 6.72 gear ratio.
20:25 Let's see if he got it all together,
20:27 rear steer and all, make something happen.
20:30 There, that's the line.
20:33 It's so hard to set up that line.
20:34 Like Kimberly had the perfect line
20:36 and just blitzed right over it.
20:37 But now, oh, he had it, now lost it.
20:39 Sometimes rear steer can be your friend
20:41 and sometimes it can't.
20:43 He's now out of bounds.
20:47 Dang, Jason Moon enters the frame twister.
20:50 He's the largest rig.
20:51 In fact, he's so large, he altered the tide
20:53 here in California when he came to the state.
20:56 Now he's got a lot of plate metal on it,
20:57 18 inch coil overs and a 6.39 inch engine.
21:01 That just stuttered right now.
21:03 Let's see if he can get it going.
21:04 Yep, so he's using some of that protection
21:06 'cause he's just driving right over.
21:09 But let's see if that weight hinders him.
21:11 His size is okay 'cause he's just able to crawl
21:14 right over that first rock.
21:15 But with size comes weight.
21:19 We're hearing some strange noises from the suspension.
21:23 So watch carefully.
21:26 His drive shaft is still spinning,
21:28 but his axle's not engaged.
21:30 That means he's lost his gear in the axles,
21:32 which is a bad thing.
21:32 He's also in two wheel drive right now.
21:35 He is dragging the tow rig towards him.
21:37 He is so heavy that the tow rig cannot hold him still.
21:41 He's pulling the tow rig into the course.
21:44 On it!
21:54 Frame twisters over and out, and so's Cam.
21:58 He's way out ahead of everyone.
22:00 In fact, 40% of the field didn't even finish.
22:05 (upbeat rock music)
22:08 The ton of pulling power you saw.
22:11 (upbeat rock music)
22:14 (upbeat rock music)
22:17 (upbeat rock music)
22:20 (upbeat rock music)
22:23 (upbeat rock music)
22:27 (upbeat rock music)
22:30 (upbeat rock music)
22:36 (upbeat rock music)
22:44 Give way!
22:46 (upbeat rock music)
22:49 (upbeat rock music)
22:52 (upbeat rock music)
22:56 (upbeat rock music)
23:00 (upbeat rock music)
23:04 (upbeat rock music)
23:08 (upbeat rock music)
23:12 (upbeat rock music)
23:17 (upbeat rock music)
23:20 (upbeat rock music)
23:24 And there it goes.
23:30 The spotter's gotta cross the line with him.
23:32 One, and the spotter finishes.
23:34 There you go.
23:34 Woo-hoo!
23:36 (wind blowing)
