01:05 Chile's National Statistics Institute reported
01:20 that the unemployment rate registered
01:22 its 10th annual increase, reaching 9%
01:25 during the June, August, 2023 quarter.
01:27 According to the information provided
01:29 by the National Unemployment Survey,
01:31 the figure represents an increase
01:33 of 1.1 percentage points in 12 months.
01:37 The entity indicated that this was due to the increase
01:40 in the number of people reaching working age
01:43 or finishing their studies looking for work
01:46 for the first time.
01:47 On the other hand, employment in the informal sector
01:51 of the economy remains at 26.7%
01:55 with no variation in the last year.

02:16 due to the multiple messages of racism
02:18 and intimidation that she has received during last week.
02:22 In local media, the threats against the minister
02:25 intensified after the ministry fired Marcella D'Urgeda,
02:29 one of Franco's former advisors who had attacked supporters
02:32 of the Sao Paolo Soccer Club in social media.

03:47 While the state of Rio Grande do Sul is affected
03:50 by heavy rains and floods that have displaced
03:53 thousands of citizens.
03:54 Governor Katie Holtschuhl and the mayor Eric Adams
04:06 declared a state of emergency due to the heavy flash rains
04:08 in the northeastern US that have caused flash flooding
04:12 in large areas of New York, Long Island,
04:14 and the Hudson Village on Friday.
04:16 Early Friday morning, many streets in southern New York
04:20 and more than half of its subway network were impossible.
04:24 The Metro North Railroad serving the Hudson Village
04:28 had some sections suspended.
04:31 Surrounding the highway in Long Island,
04:33 Queens, and Brooklyn were also impossible.
04:36 - I'm issuing a state of an emergency for New York City
04:42 based on the weather conditions.
04:44 And I want to say to all New Yorkers,
04:46 this is time for heightened alertness
04:49 and extreme caution.
04:52 If you are home, stay home.
04:54 If you are at work or school, shelter in place for now.
04:59 Some of our subways are flooded
05:02 and it's extremely difficult to move around the city.
05:05 Many of our area airports are experiencing delays.
05:10 And if you are out and encounter a flood, a flooded area,
05:16 be it on a roadway or a subway station,
05:20 do not enter, take necessary precaution.

05:44 However, the president of the United States auto worker,
05:47 Sean Finn, informed that Jeeb Marker, the selling agent,
05:50 was upheard from the extension
05:52 due to the significant progress in the month's discuss.
05:56 - Take on this fight, you know?
06:00 This fight isn't just about us, it's history.
06:03 You know, this is for the entire middle class.
06:05 - Why today, 'cause Sean Finn said so today.
06:08 But I guess we're not getting what we want.
06:10 And so I guess he's gonna,
06:12 he got us out here to prove that we mean business.
06:14 We want a fair contract.
06:15 - Nobody want a strike, nobody.
06:17 We all supposed to be a family
06:19 and we were just trying to feed our family.
06:21 And with the cost of living going on and everything,
06:23 that's all we ask is to help us feed our family
06:26 and to go with the economic.

06:42 - Welcome back to "From the South."
06:53 The president of Russia Vladimir Putin
06:55 assured that the Latin American
06:56 will play a little role in world politics.
06:59 During his participation
07:01 in the Russian-Latin American
07:02 International Parliamentary Conference,
07:04 the Russian head of state emphasized
07:06 that Latin American countries
07:07 are showing a pattern of success
07:10 in the progressive formation of a multipolar system.
07:13 The Russian president underlined
07:15 that the integration policy
07:16 of the governments of South America
07:19 is being promoted by international relations
07:23 based on equality, justice, respect for international law
07:26 and the legitimate interests of each country.
07:29 - In this new polycentric architecture,
07:34 governments of Latin America
07:37 with their huge economic potential and human resources
07:40 as well as their pursuit
07:42 of leading independent international policies
07:44 will gain one of the leading roles in the world.
07:48 I have no doubt about it.
07:50 BRICS is an organization, it's not a military alliance.
07:55 It's just a platform for coordination of positions
07:59 to figure out mutually acceptable decision
08:03 based on sovereignty,
08:06 independence and mutual respect.
08:07 - The Russian president said
08:10 that international financial architecture
08:12 that only benefits the interests
08:14 of the so-called golden billion
08:16 and call for a change of the international rules.
08:19 - I'm saying this because modern financial
08:22 and credit relationships are built in a way
08:24 that they only serve interests
08:26 of the so-called golden billion.
08:27 They, this golden billion, so to say,
08:34 the leaders of these countries of golden billion,
08:36 they are exploding almost all other countries in the world.
08:39 They abuse their power in technological,
08:43 informational and financial aspects.
08:45 These credit obligations that are dictated
08:51 on most developing markets
08:52 are not even credit obligations anymore.
08:54 It's more like a quit-rant.
09:00 Some sort of indemnity.
09:01 This should not be happening.
09:05 That's why together we need to change the rules
09:09 in the international area.
09:11 - During his speech at the Russian-American
09:14 Parliamentary Conference of Russia
09:16 and President Vladimir Putin,
09:19 recall his meeting with the Cuban revolution leader,
09:21 the Commander Fidel Castro.
09:23 - I remember my first meeting with Fidel Castro
09:28 and there were a few.
09:29 He was such a rock, you know?
09:31 He was the kind of person who spent every second
09:37 thinking about other people, not only Cubans.
09:41 He thought about all of Latin America
09:42 and the whole humanity.
09:44 His entire consciousness was filled
09:50 with the intention of achieving common good and justice.
09:52 It was his goal.

14:49 We're told that more than 125,000 people have been reached in Libya with life-saving assistance,
14:55 including food, water, and health items.
14:58 More than a dozen UN agencies and humanitarian partners are on the ground
15:02 helping set up field hospitals and water tanks
15:06 and providing protection services to people impacted by the floods around Derna.
15:11 The people are telling us that they need affordable food and housing assistance
15:16 as well as access to health care, banking services, psychosocial support, and safe drinking water.
15:22 Regarding a year, the United Nations spokesperson said that at least 13,000 people
15:28 have been affected by the heavy rains last week, mostly in the south of the country,
15:33 adding that the de facto authorities continue to support the response
15:37 in line with other aid agencies.
15:39 In Niger, as heavy rains continue there,
15:43 our humanitarian colleagues are concerned about flooding,
15:46 particularly impacting in the southern part of the country.
15:49 Last week alone, 13,000 people were affected,
15:53 and since July, according to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs,

17:33 We continue with our set of Venezuela on the move for now from the state of Miranda,
17:38 where we will learn about a sugar cane extraction process
17:41 into a traditional handmade production known as vanilla. Let's see.
17:46 [Machine sounds]
17:48 It is a machine from the first half of the 20th century.
17:52 The motor is lubricated to prevent parts from failing.
17:56 It is used to extract the juice from the sugar cane.
18:00 My father and grandfather bought it in the late 1930s.
18:05 It was not yet born, and my father was in his 20s.
18:09 We have been improving its spare parts.
18:14 For example, we ordered the manufacture of new copper parts.
18:18 We do not let it decay. We have to keep it up to date.
18:28 Around the place, the bark is gathered and thrown inside a big oven.
18:35 Jose has been stoking the fire for a decade.
18:40 The work is hard and hot. Nothing is wasted from the sugar cane.
18:45 Everything is used, the straw, the bagasse, everything.
18:49 The liquid obtained from the sugar cane, or guarapo, goes directly to the boilers.
18:57 This is when the manual process begins.
19:00 They pass the broth through each tank, and the high temperatures make it gain consistency.
19:06 The sweetness attracts the bees.
19:09 It has been this way through the 200 years of existence of this mill.
19:15 This is the work, and it comes from way back, from the family, from generation to generation.
19:25 And even the pandemic did not stop them.
19:30 They continue preparing the mixture until they get the necessary thickness and achieve the texture of honey.
19:36 Then they empty it into molds and let it dry.
19:40 They form blocks for sale.
19:42 In this Andean area, it is not the only one.
19:46 There are eight artisanal panela mills, producing a traditional handmade product with history.
19:52 The best sugar cane of all Venezuela grows here in this region.
19:58 It is so important that it is part of the coat of arms of the municipality.
20:06 Today it is the basis for preparing traditional Venezuelan dessert and drinks.
20:13 But it wasn't until the end of the 1500s when panela began to be known in this country.
