00:00Brazil's Xucuru indigenous nation has just finished its 25th annual assembly.
00:06A correspondent in the South American country, Brian Meir, has more.
00:12After three days of debates, speeches from visiting politicians and indigenous leaders,
00:17and a plenary which produced a collective statement denouncing criminalization of indigenous people in Brazil,
00:22Chief Marco Xucuru led thousands of followers on a long march down from the Ururuba Hills
00:28into downtown Pescara, Pernambuco.
00:35These commitments we carry extend far beyond me.
00:40They are for our ancestors.
00:44For our Mother Earth.
00:49Our Mother Nature
00:51calls us to continue our mission, to watch over, protect, and care for this land that we will return to one day and become one with.
01:06In addition to unifying the Xucuru from over a dozen villages on their 28,000 hectare reserve in the Ururuba Hills,
01:18this year's march, marking the end of the assembly, was an important show of political force
01:23at a moment in which a group of far-right politicians aligned with ex-president Bolsonaro
01:27are using dirty legal maneuvers to try to remove Chief Marcos from office.
01:34We believe nothing could be more fitting,
01:36dedicating our 25th assembly to the issue of criminalization,
01:40especially as Chief Marcos, current leader of the Xucuru people and son of Chief Chicao,
01:45faces such persecution.
01:46And he's not alone. Today, with the rise of social media and unincreasingly extreme conservatism,
01:54racism has become disturbingly normalized.
01:57In 1998, Chief Marcos' father, Chief Chicao, a beloved leader who led a return to the Xucuru's traditional religion
02:04to mobilize his people to fight for their rights, was assassinated by ranchers.
02:09This year's annual march was special because for the first time, Chief Marcos led it as the democratically elected mayor of Pescara.
02:15We are ending our event today at the location where they murdered Chief Chicao.
02:22He died here 27 years ago, on this day.
02:26For which, Xucuru, this is a moment of pride.
02:32The Xucuru are well aware of the challenges that lie ahead,
02:36as a passage from the assembly's final declaration reads,
02:39from a violated past to a criminalized present, we will resist.
02:45Brian Meir, Telesur, Pescara, Pernambuco.
02:48I'll be there.
02:49This year's the first time in Step 5.

02:56Which is known as a 2011.
02:58Bip, Lib, and 12.
