Germany, once the world market leader, today the sick man of Europe.
00:09
Electricity prices are exploding, steel giants have temporarily shut down production to survive.
00:15
Other companies are fleeing and relocating their production to Eastern Europe, China and out of Germany.
00:22
Entire industries are struggling, especially the automotive industry.
00:26
Volkswagen, Mercedes and BMW are cutting thousands of jobs.
00:31
Made in Germany has become too expensive.
00:38
One of the biggest problems, energy costs.
00:41
The new Minister of Economic Affairs, Katerina Reisch, is also aware of this.
00:45
She wants to subsidize industrial electricity with the state.
00:49
But the EU is threatening not to participate.
00:52
Reisch also wants new gas-fired power plants.
00:55
But gas prices are higher than ever.
00:57
Does the Minister have the right formula to save the German economy?
01:01
01:54
also 15 und 20 Cent pro Kilowattstunde Erzeugerpreise in Deutschland hätte.
01:59
Das ist zu teuer.
02:00
Damit wird man nicht wettbewerbsfähig.
02:02
02:27
aber dann eben mit den entsprechenden Filtern.
02:29
In any case, lights are already going out in companies.
02:32
In 2024, Germany lost almost 200,000 companies,
02:37
a record which will continue into 2025.
02:40
The 1,626 bankruptcies in April alone surpassen figures from the 2008 global financial crisis.
02:48
Germany is still the third largest economy in the world,
02:51
but the future is not looking so bright.
