Transport Interchange Hub: Bristol Airport announced a £6 million pound investment

Bristol Airport is investing over £60m in creating a public transport interchange hub and multi-storey car park. This transformational project - its largest capital project ever - will enhance services and accessibility for customers whether arriving or departing from Bristol Airport. We chat to the airport’s CEO Dave Lees to find out more.

00:08 both through this project but through other kind of schemes and improvements

00:12 to really make sure that travel is open for everybody because why shouldn't it

00:15 be that's what we all want. Bristol Airport is investing over 60 million

00:21 pounds to create a public transport interchange hub and another multi-story

00:26 car park. This transformational project, his largest project ever, will enhance

00:31 services and accessibility for customers whether arriving or departing from

00:36 Bristol Airport. So just behind me you can see the original multi-story car

00:41 park and the Shortsday car park which is where all these cars are now. Now this

00:46 will be transformed into the second multi-story car park which will make up

00:50 the interchange hub. Let's chat to the CEO of Bristol Airport David Lease to

00:56 find out more about what we can expect from this new investment. It's a really

01:01 exciting time because at long last we can respond to our customers requests

01:06 around you know improving the experience. Earlier this year we received permission

01:11 to expand to 12 million passengers and this is the first but the biggest

01:15 project we've ever undertaken and it's going to really be transformation in

01:20 terms of how people get to and from the airport and their experience their first

01:23 and last experience here at the airport. A new public transport interchange is

01:28 the key centerpiece of this, much simpler in terms of how people are going to get

01:34 as I say to and from the airport. But airport bosses have said that this

01:38 project will be more than just a car park. Let's find out more from Bristol

01:43 Airport CEO. Well rather than the slightly more convoluted way that people

01:49 get in and out of the airport at the moment we're going to be changing the whole of

01:52 the road system but rather than people having to cross roads, pedestrian

01:56 crossings, change in level, people will be very simply be able to arrive on top of a

02:02 new multi-story car park directly opposite the terminal, undercover, walk

02:07 straight across, no change in level, once again undercover. So we're going to be

02:12 starting, well we've already started on site but really starting the main

02:16 construction in the next month and that's going to take about 18 months. So we're

02:20 looking to open the new public transport interchange in the summer of 2025.

02:26 Some of the initial feedback has been really positive, people don't

02:28 understandably want to be having a change in level when they're pulling

02:32 suitcases which I can completely understand, you know when it's raining

02:35 outside who wants to be out in the rain or the wind. So really positive

02:41 and we'll be sharing more information with our customers over the course of

02:45 the coming weeks, people will be able to see that on social media as well as when

02:48 they're traveling through the airport, giving them a glimpse of what's coming.

02:51 Only time will tell how much the work disrupts commuters and if the

02:56 investment has a positive impact on the City of Bristol and those who use

03:02 Bristol Airport.
