00:00 My name is Cameron Green, I'm from Perth, Australia and I'm a professional cricketer.
00:07 Yeah, I started cricket probably in my backyard I'd say. I think most people growing up my
00:14 age, that's not the way you start your cricket journey. I think I was quite fortunate to
00:18 have quite a large backyard and whenever Dad got home from work I used to always drag him
00:24 out in the backyard so that's probably where my journey started.
00:31 What I love about cricket is that it's a team sport. I think growing up you're playing with
00:37 your mates, every weekend you're looking forward to it. I think when school would roll around
00:42 on Monday you just couldn't wait for the weekend to play again.
00:47 How I would explain the game of cricket is that it's a bit of an individual team sport.
00:52 I think it's really unique in the fact that it's you hitting the cricket ball or it's
00:56 you bowling the ball or it's you catching the ball but all your team mates, how they
01:01 go and how well they catch or bowl or bat affect how the team goes. I think that's what
01:08 makes it so great is that you need your whole team mates to play well to win a game of cricket,
01:12 it's not just how you play.
01:13 I had a few heroes growing up like Ricky Ponting and Brett Lee. I think in the backyard you
01:21 wanted a bat like Ricky Ponting and bowl as quick as Brett Lee.
01:27 I think my strength for cricket, I think obviously physically quite tall for a cricketer. That
01:33 brings a few unique things that I can potentially do that some others might not. Potentially
01:40 more bounce when I bowl or maybe play some shots that some other guys might not be able
01:45 to. Growing up as a youngster being a little bit smaller than everyone else I had to be
01:50 quite good technically whether I was batting or bowling to perform well and then thankfully
01:56 in about year 11 or 12 I grew. I like to think I've got a nice mixture of physicality but
02:03 technique.
02:07 I think one of the best pieces of advice that I've received from a coach, I think recently
02:11 was about potentially being under prepared going into a tournament. I think back to when
02:19 I played in the IPL recently I've heard from so many people that it's quite an exhausting
02:25 tournament. He spoke about being maybe under prepared at the start of the tournament because
02:30 you're going to be playing a lot of cricket. I think you want to be playing your best cricket
02:34 by the end of the tournament. It might sound a bit weird being under prepared leading into
02:40 the first game but I think over the course of the tournament you just get better and
02:44 better and hopefully you're peaking by the end.
02:46 I think one of the small things that I do is maybe doing homework on the opposition
02:53 prior to a game. I think you can easily just want to relax in the afternoon before a game
03:02 which is also perfectly fine but sometimes I find it really helpful to look into my opposition
03:11 to see what skill sets they've got, what potential variations or things they do differently
03:17 to maybe just have a 1% advantage leading into a day's play, kind of having a good understanding
03:24 of what the opposition does.
03:25 I think with injuries or failure, I think it's just part of the game. At times you've
03:35 got to accept it. There might be things that are out of your control or things that maybe
03:40 you could control and you try and learn from it. So I think all you can really do is prepare
03:44 as well as you can before a game. I think, speaking to a few guys, they like to say they
03:50 feel really good when they know they've done everything they can prior to a game before
03:54 they get onto the field and when you get onto the field it's just whatever happens basically.
03:59 So I think if you're in that mindset that you've done everything right, it gives you
04:02 yourself the best chance.
04:07 Outside of sport, I'd love to be good at cooking I think. I'm really enjoying being back home
04:12 for a few weeks trying to cook. When everyone else is working, you can kind of be at home
04:19 trying to cook up a meal for everybody. I've really enjoyed that recently, so yeah, probably cooking.
04:24 Yeah, I think growing up in WA, I think one of my favourite cricket grounds is the Wacker.
04:32 I think that's where I used to watch my test cricket when I was growing up. Thankfully
04:37 we had the Wacker around and unfortunately it's not used for test cricket anymore, but
04:42 that's where you get a train when you play for WA. We're very fortunate to have that
04:47 just for WA cricket. Other favourite grounds I think, probably just on the back of good
04:53 memories, I think the SCG. Got my first 50 there. We've had a couple of good wins there
05:01 as well. I think the MCG, Boxing Day is obviously quite huge. We won the Ashes there one year
05:08 and I got my first Fifer there. So yeah, there's a few grounds that I've probably got key memories
05:16 from myself and yeah, enjoy playing there.
05:18 I think my biggest achievement is winning an Ashes series in Australia. That was massive
05:27 I think. My first taste of Ashes cricket and yeah, obviously played in a really good team
05:33 and was quite dominant. So that was a lot of fun playing in that.
05:37 Probably the most influential people are probably your parents. I think they're the first people
05:44 that make you fall in love with the game. I think, yeah, my dad loved his cricket and
05:50 always wanted to play backyard cricket with me and I think that's where I used to, yeah,
05:56 you hone your craft just as a youngster, just learning on the go without even realising
05:59 just playing backyard cricket with your dad or uncle. So yeah, they're probably the most
06:06 influential people early in my career.
06:08 Someone in the world I'd like to meet would be maybe LeBron James. I think I've just been
06:17 following him around a little bit recently and obviously a legend of the game and for
06:22 what, how he's kind of grown up with all the pressure of being the next big thing and people
06:26 already saying it's going to be a Hall of Fame before you've even started. There's a
06:29 lot of pressure and what he's been able to achieve and kind of meet those expectations
06:34 which were pretty lengthy were obviously pretty incredible. So yeah, I'd like to talk him
