00:00 Academics have urged the government to foster greater inclusivity within the National Education
00:07 System's history syllabus by integrating the different perspectives of Malaysia's
00:12 diverse communities and regions.
00:15 Helen Ting of University Kembangsaan Malaysia said adopting an inquiry-based approach could
00:21 potentially pique students' interest in learning history as a way of widening their
00:26 worldview.
00:28 For instance, Ting suggested teaching about the Japanese occupation would be a more comprehensive
00:34 way to educate students to learn about the real-life experiences of various communities.
00:41 Ting also said that the current syllabus, which is overwhelmingly Malay-centric, hardly
00:47 mentions the contributions of the Chinese and Indian communities in the nation-building
00:52 era as well as the role of the Orang Asli community in West Malaysia.
00:58 Meanwhile, Teo Kok Siong of UKM called for history textbooks to put forward a more balanced
01:04 representation of Malaysia's diversity.
01:09 Cultural activist Eden Khoo concurred, saying history textbooks should not avoid addressing
01:14 sensitive topics as an understanding of different perspectives can aid in nurturing students'
01:20 critical thinking skills.
