00:00 Welcome to the WrestleTalk News, I'm Pete Quinnell.
00:08 Last night was the AEW Dynamite Grand Slam 2023 edition from Arthur Ashe, where there
00:13 were some pretty huge matches on display, it felt like a mini-pay-per-view.
00:16 However, with the big stakes came some unfortunate injuries.
00:19 Jon Moxley put his international championship on the line against Rey Fenix, and in what
00:23 became the finish of the match, Fenix delivered a piledriver to Mox, which current speculation
00:27 points to the move where Mox got hurt, landing too much on his head.
00:31 Fenix would pin Mox, with Mox not kicking out, but the referee still calling a two count,
00:36 so Fenix hit the same move again, this time for a three count, and winning the title.
00:41 Speculation currently says that this was an audible from Moxley to have Fenix win, with
00:44 Fightful Select confirming that the finish of the match was altered.
00:47 They also note that Mox left under his own power, was checked on by multiple people,
00:51 and repeatedly communicated to people that he was okay.
00:54 PWInsider is reporting that the belief backstage was that Mox suffered a concussion, but this
00:59 is unconfirmed as of right now.
01:01 Best wishes to Mox, I hope you get better soon.
01:03 But that wasn't the only injury on last night's show, as during the MJF and Samoa
01:07 Joe title match, Adam Cole ran down to support his friend.
01:10 In doing so, he jumped off the stage to the floor, before taking a spill, and then being
01:14 around for the rest of the match with a noticeable limp.
01:17 Fightful Select is reporting that Cole was in obvious pain backstage, and was taken to
01:21 hospital after the show.
01:22 He has since reportedly left the hospital, but on crutches.
01:26 The severity of this injury isn't known as of the time of writing.
01:29 Best wishes to Adam Cole, I hope you get better soon.
01:31 Both of these injuries come at devastating times for both men, with Moxley just starting
01:35 up his international title reign, and Cole in the midst of the supremely hot MJF partnership
01:40 in and around the main event scene.
01:41 Spare a thought for both of them in the comments, and fingers crossed, both injuries are minor
01:46 and can be recovered from quickly.
01:47 Godspeed gents.
01:48 In other news, WWE has terminated the working relationship with Panini, the company responsible
01:53 for trading cards and stickers, due to a reported breach of contract.
01:57 This comes from Darren Rovell, a sports business reporter for Action Network, who reports that
02:01 the contract with Panini had two plus years left on the deal, and WWE are actively working
02:06 to shift the rights over to Fanatics immediately, who were due to get the rights starting in
02:10 2026.
02:11 More details on this are sure to come to light soon, so stay tuned to WrestleTalk.com for
02:14 more.
02:15 And in Vince McMahon news, there's always some of that, there's more details on the
02:19 employee meeting held the other day, headed up by Vince and Ariya Manuel.
02:23 In addition to receiving eye rolls from those in attendance because Vince said that WWE
02:26 was stagnating and this merger was the only logical next step, something that is provably
02:31 false by WWE's own admittance, Vince also reportedly commented that he wasn't receiving
02:35 enough applause by his employees, even saying "I'm Vince McMahon, damn it" according
02:40 to PWInsider before following that up with "This is where you're supposed to clap."
02:44 Gross!
02:48 Vince was also reportedly using a cane to walk, still recovering from his back surgery,
02:52 but don't worry, he doesn't think he's on the way out any time soon, as Kurt Angle
02:56 recently mentioned on his appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience, a conversation that
03:00 he shared with Vince after Kurt came back to the company.
03:02 "When I came back to WWE, he said, 'I'm gonna have this company for a lot longer than
03:06 you think, Mr. Angle.
03:08 I'm 73 right now, my mom lived to be 101.
03:11 I'm planning on living till I'm 120.
03:13 I'm never letting the company go.
03:15 I'm always gonna be working here.
03:16 They're gonna have to pry it from my cold, dead hands.'
03:19 Horrifying stuff that in no way makes me feel absolutely dead inside."
03:23 There is so much more news today, like Elimination Chamber being announced for Australia, Sheamus'
03:27 WWE contract going on the ever-increasing pile of ones that expire in 2024, a potential
03:31 date for another AEW pay-per-view this year, and so much more, there's just a lot happening
03:36 right now.
03:37 Hey guys, look, let's take it down a notch, shall we?
03:41 Posting news can be so crazy sometimes, I think it's time we chilled out for a second.
03:47 It's time for a message from this video's sponsor, Raid Shadow Legends.
03:50 Now, you've probably heard about them before, it's the super in-depth mobile RPG game,
03:55 hundreds of champions to collect, but you'll never guess what though, there's a new rarity
03:59 of champion coming out in the game.
04:01 Yeah, it's a step above legendary, it's actually mythical.
04:05 What do mythical champions do?
04:07 Well, they're basically two champions in one, because they can metamorph between two
04:11 different forms.
04:13 Like this.
04:14 I'm A-T-R-S-A Turbo Jake, and just like mythical champions, I've unlocked a new
04:20 form, a new powers, a new skill.
04:21 Just look what I can do now!
04:22 See?
04:23 Mythical champions are powerful!
04:24 They're the most versatile champions ever, perfectly suited and tailored to your playstyle.
04:35 Both forms use the same artifacts, accessories, masteries, and blessings, so be careful how
04:40 you use them, summon new mythical champions from brand new red primal shards in the portal.
04:45 And for new players, you can get your hands on Stag Knight, as well as a skin for Stag
04:49 Knight designed by JonTron, using the code JTSKIN before October 7th.
04:53 It's that easy!
04:54 And if you're not a new player, you can still get Stag Knight through an in-game event.
04:58 And there's a new legendary champion too!
05:01 Raids take on the Monkey King from Chinese legend, Su Mu Kong!
05:03 All you gotta do is log in on 7 different days between now and October 23rd, and he's
05:08 yours!
05:09 With all this exciting news, use the link in the description or scan the QR code on
05:13 screen now to get crazy bonuses when you download the game, like epic champion Drake, and other
05:19 useful things like energy refills, skill tome, and an XP booster!
05:23 So download Raid today, and-
05:29 Wait, that...raid?
05:35 Well that sure was...something.
05:37 Hmm.
05:38 Anyway, it's Thursday, you know what that means.
05:46 Oli is on holiday so I'm reviewing AEW Dynamite Grand Slam Edition in about 5 minutes.
05:51 One of the big criticisms of AEW over the last year is one of excess.
05:56 Last year's All Out has become infamous in online discourse because it had a whopping
06:01 15 matches on the card, meaning that not everything was given time to breathe or get over.
06:07 And that is the only thing people talk about from that show.
06:11 But this year's Grand Slam almost felt like an NXT TakeOver event - just 5 matches, all
06:16 of which were given time to get over and tell their stories.
06:20 And it resulted in an excellent, excellent episode of professional wrestling with one
06:25 half-decent Chris Jericho match.
06:28 And an unfortunate finish to the Mox match.
06:30 Oh, and they didn't book that Edge debut that I'd fancy booked in my head, which
06:34 must mean that Tony Khan is a bad booker or something, get me on Twitter to tell him that.
06:38 But apart from that, Grand Slam was excellent, and it kicked off in the most spectacular
06:43 of ways.
06:44 Eddie Kingston is perhaps the most compelling character in all of pro wrestling right now.
06:50 He always is and always has been, he just often isn't given the platform in AEW to
06:55 show that off.
06:56 He has his moments, sure, but then is sometimes just gone for a bit, or the focus of his story
07:01 is shifted to someone else.
07:03 But when he comes back when he is on TV, it's breathtaking.
07:07 You see, no one told Eddie that pro wrestling isn't real, so he just thinks it's real.
07:12 And because he thinks it's real, he makes me believe that pro wrestling is real.
07:17 And that was on full display here as his long-standing real-life issues with Claudio Castagnoli
07:22 finally came to a conclusion for both the ROH World Championship and the New Japan Strong
07:27 Openweight Championship.
07:29 This feud hasn't been perfect from a TV standpoint, but the final few weeks were exceptional,
07:35 and this match more than matched up to that brilliant build.
07:38 Ian Riccoboni on commentary summed it up perfectly - it's a handicap match, as Eddie takes
07:43 on Claudio and himself.
07:45 Tony Schiavone added Claudio loves wrestling, and he hates Eddie Kingston.
07:51 These lines were the right amount of salt and pepper seasoning to this delicious meal
07:54 of a match, which saw Eddie kick out of the Ricola Bomb, hit a series of backfists and
07:58 a powerbomb of his own to get the win.
08:01 The crowd lost their collective minds as New York's own Eddie not only won the ROH Championship,
08:06 but also beat his inner turmoil and hatred for Claudio.
08:10 As Ian shouted out the names that have held this belt before, like Xavier, Lowkey, Homicide,
08:15 Dave Briscoe and AEW names like Bryan Danielson, Claudio finally shook the hand of Kingston
08:21 and showed him the respect Eddie felt he never got.
08:24 This was beautiful, emotional and perfect.
08:28 And in only that way that pro wrestling can be.
08:31 The broadcast then cut to Roderick Strong in a very fake looking hospital having Getwellsoon
08:35 cards read to him by the Kingdom.
08:38 I love how silly wrestling is.
08:40 Adam Cole finally showed Roddy some care for his neck health by arriving late to the hospital
08:44 and then left almost immediately because he needed to be in Max's corner for tonight.
08:48 What a terrible friend.
08:50 Christian Cage challenged Darby to a handicap match - I mean triple threat match on Collision
08:55 for the TNT Championship with himself and Luchasaurus.
08:57 I wonder if this is where Cage will actually win the TNT title for realsies.
09:02 And while Eddie and Claudio was just about perfect, we next had the…
09:06 Sigh…
09:07 Jericho match.
09:08 Look, I like Chris Jericho.
09:09 I'm a fan of Chris Jericho.
09:11 Chris Jericho is the first bit of WWE merchandise I ever bought when I went to a Raw taping
09:16 in 2008.
09:17 Go and watch my parts fun known list about my favourite wrestlers of all time.
09:21 He made that list.
09:23 But there's something about his AEW stories that sometimes don't click, and this is
09:28 one of them.
09:29 He and Sami had a good match, but the crowd's lack of reaction to it is indicative of how
09:34 little people are into the story going in.
09:37 You can do all the top rope cutters you want, but this New York crowd were not invested
09:42 in Jericho vs. Sami.
09:44 The finish was superb though, as Sami went for a Shooting Star Press and Jericho countered
09:47 with a perfectly timed Codebreaker for the win.
09:51 In a nice little touch, Sami wore the same colours that Jericho wore in his WrestleMania
09:54 match with Shawn Michaels, and just like that match, Sami turned heel afterwards with a
09:59 low blow and Jericho did that same HBK sell for it.
10:04 Don Callis came down to reveal that Sami has joined the family and they left together.
10:09 Right, so here's the problem.
10:12 Jericho was happily going to join Don's group before Callis revealed it was a trap.
10:18 Jericho had decided to abandon his friends in the Autobot and join Megatron in the Decepticons.
10:25 This is why the JAS broke up, because Jericho broke them up by wanting to side with the
10:31 baddies.
10:32 Is now I'm supposed to feel sympathy for Jericho that Sami has instead joined the baddies?
10:37 The same baddies that Jericho wanted to join?
10:40 Chris, I love you.
10:42 And I love you Don Callis.
10:44 And I'm indifferent on you Sami Guevara.
10:46 But this ain't working.
10:47 Headline: Roddy & Max Calls Back
10:48 MJF and Cole were about to do their catchphrase earlier in the day, but Cole was called back
10:51 to the hospital by Roddy, which meant that Max was going to have to go into the main
10:55 event alone.
10:56 Headline: Roddy & Max Calls Back
10:57 Jon Moxley and Rey Fenix got off to a shaky start in their International Championship
11:00 match when it looked like Mox got rocked when Fenix did a big dive onto him before the match
11:04 began.
11:05 But they brought it back around with a good story of Fenix trying to do flip-de-doos and
11:10 Moxley punching him in the mouth.
11:12 But the finish saw Fenix hit a piledriver, the ref counted two, Mox did not kick out
11:16 for the three.
11:17 Fenix did the move again and the ref counted the three.
11:20 As Pete detailed earlier, Mox called an audible because he got hurt.
11:24 A potential concussion.
11:25 Get well soon, Mox.
11:27 It's a shame, but I hope that maybe Fenix can get something out of this.
11:31 My only concern is that - and we've seen this in the past - TK doesn't respond well
11:35 to his plans changing.
11:37 So let's hope he can pivot here for a change and give Fenix a decent run with the belt.
11:43 Sarraya retained the Women's Championship over Toni Storm and her excellent new black
11:47 and white presentation entrance and the crowd were super into Storm's new character which
11:52 has gotten over to a spectacular degree.
11:56 Shame Sarraya won then.
11:57 She used her usual heel shenanigans and hit a second rope rampage for the win.
12:01 It was okay, but the story of the outcast split has only been so-so.
12:06 And the main event saw MJF retain the AEW World Championship over Samoa Joe in an excellent
12:12 main event.
12:13 MJF was wrestling's best heel and is now wrestling's best babyface.
12:17 He might be a perfect wrestler, and this New York crowd were happy to shower him with that
12:23 praise.
12:24 Cole returned from his second trip to the hospital after Max had kicked out of a Muscle
12:28 Buster and a Piledriver on the concrete floor and encouraged MJF to escape the Coquina Clutch.
12:34 He then also distracted enough to allow Max to choke out Joe with some tape behind the
12:39 referee's back for the win.
12:41 This match was so great, and I totally bought the Muscle Buster near fall at the end.
12:47 I really thought that was the end of Max's run as champ.
12:50 Joe, in a show of respect, also shook Max's hand after the match.
12:55 That was an excellent two hours of wrestling.
13:00 Chris Jericho match in the middle.
13:02 AEW Grand Slam is a big 4 out of 5.
13:05 Now go and watch our latest list on PartsFunKnown, which counts down the greatest rivals of Shawn
13:10 Michaels.
13:11 Maybe Jericho will make that list.
13:14 List joke.
13:15 Here's what's next!
