REPLAY: NASA unveils report on unidentified anomalous phenomena

00:00 NASA has released a report on what it needs to better identify UFOs.

00:04 The panel studying UFOs recommending that the agency play a larger role in detecting

00:09 and studying mysterious airborne objects.

00:11 Let's take a listen to their press conference underwear.

00:13 The James Webb Space Telescope, which searches for exoplanets with signs of habitability.

00:23 We are looking for signs of life, past and present.

00:29 And it's in our DNA to explore and to ask why things are the way they are.

00:39 In June of last year, NASA commissioned an independent study team to examine unidentified

00:47 anomalous phenomena.

00:50 We did so with a few goals in mind.

00:54 First to examine how NASA can use our expertise and instruments to study UAP from a scientific

01:02 perspective.

01:04 Second, shift the conversation about UAP from sensationalism to science.

01:16 And to make sure that whatever we find or whatever we recommend, to make sure that information

01:26 is shared transparently around the world.

01:31 There's a global fascination with UAP.

01:36 On my travels, one of the first questions I often get is about these sightings.

01:45 And much of that fascination is due to the unknown nature of it.

01:52 Think about it.

01:53 Most UAP sightings result in very limited data.

01:57 That makes it even more difficult to draw scientific conclusions about the nature of

02:03 UAP.

02:06 And so this independent study team brought together some of the world's leading scientists,

02:12 data and artificial intelligence experts, aerospace safety specialists, all with a specific

02:23 charge from me, which is to tell how to apply the full focus of science and data to UAP.

02:35 And this is the first time that NASA has taken concrete action to seriously look into UAP.

02:44 And this independent study team was just that, independent.

02:51 Now NASA has a statutory authority to look for life in the universe.

03:03 And when you think of the universe and especially what we have learned from the James Webb Space

03:09 Telescope, how vast that it is, we knew before, and it was a NASA scientist, Dr. John Mather,

03:19 who got the Nobel that determined that the universe was 13.8 billion years old.

03:28 And over the years, particularly accelerated in the last century, we have an understanding

03:37 that of course ours is not the only galaxy.

03:41 And there are billions and billions of galaxies and each of those galaxies, including our

03:48 own, have billions and billions of stars.

03:55 And with the James Webb looking at the exoplanets, we are now beginning to discover, and somewhere

04:06 out there, we will discover, another medium-sized stony planet around a medium-sized sun or

04:18 star at just the right distance, not too far, not too close, with a tilt in its axis that

04:28 rotates that has carbon that will have a habitable atmosphere.

04:39 If you ask me, do I believe there's life in a universe that is so vast that it's hard

04:47 for me to comprehend how big it is, my personal answer is yes.

04:55 But I asked some of our scientists.

04:58 As a matter of fact, the Washington Post editorial board asked us to come down to the question,

05:06 what is the mathematical probability that there is life out there in the universe?

05:13 And if you calculate in billions of stars, in billions of galaxies, that there's replicated

05:25 what I just said, another stony planet, the answer was, what's the likelihood?

05:35 At least a trillion.

05:38 That's from our scientists.

05:42 So we start this without any preconceived notions, but understanding that we're in a

05:51 world of discovery, and we have taken, we NASA, have taken for the first time concrete

05:59 action to seriously look into UAP.

06:05 And this independent study team is exactly that.

06:09 It's independent.

06:12 They work to develop recommendations about how NASA could better examine them from a

06:17 scientific perspective.

06:21 And the top takeaway from the study is that there is a lot more to learn.

06:26 The NASA independent study team did not find any evidence that UAP have an extraterrestrial

06:33 origin.

06:36 But we don't know what these UAP are.

06:42 That's why I'm announcing that NASA has appointed a NASA director of UAP research.

06:51 They are being tasked with developing and overseeing the implementation of NASA's vision

06:59 for UAP research.

07:03 We will use NASA's expertise to work with other agencies to analyze UAP.

07:10 We will use AI and machine learning to search the skies for anomalies as we have been searching

07:19 the heavens and will continue to search the heavens for habitability.

07:26 And NASA will do this transparently.

07:31 So while today is a significant step for NASA, it's certainly not our final step.

07:37 And we're going to share more with you, and I want to introduce you to Dr. Nikki Fox,

07:43 who is the head of our science mission directorate.
