00:00 For the mothers and fathers out there, sugar is one of the things we are watching right now.
00:05 But if you want to bring back the sweetness to your life,
00:08 you can still do that with the alternative and all-natural plant, stevia.
00:13 That's my story, "Dapat, Alam Mo!"
00:15 Not only sugar can give sweetness,
00:22 because this plant can also be used as a sweetener.
00:26 That's stevia.
00:29 It's one of the plants that is used as a sweetener in Bukawe, Bulacan.
00:33 From farmers to by-products and cafes,
00:44 they sell stevia.
00:46 Back then, in 2004, our founder found out that there's a sweet plant
00:51 that is good for people with diabetes.
00:55 At that time, he had a sibling who almost lost her leg
00:59 because of her diabetes.
01:01 They are also a family who grows their own crops.
01:04 So when he found out that there's a plant,
01:07 that's when the research and development started.
01:10 I'm Kate Celsil, the marketing manager of the farm.
01:14 They first tried planting a plant called stevia.
01:18 We built this stevia farm because of the advocacy
01:23 of our founder, Maura de Leon.
01:27 This is the first stevia farm in the Philippines.
01:31 It's not easy to cultivate in the Philippines
01:35 because stevia is a wild plant.
01:38 We want to help farmers to reduce their diabetes in the Philippines.
01:45 This is where the idea of making different products from stevia came from.
01:50 Fresh leaves are dried to make tea or stevia powder.
01:54 We make coffee, juice, tea, and coffee.
02:02 We also make non-food products like shampoo and conditioner.
02:07 The good thing about stevia is that it's not only good as a sweetener,
02:11 but it's also good for non-food products.
02:13 Since it has a high level of antioxidants, it's also good for the skin.
02:17 Their farm also became an attraction and a cafe in Bulacan.
02:21 Stevia leaves are used as ingredients in their fresh salad.
02:27 Because stevia is a natural sweetener, it also makes their fried suman sweet.
02:42 Using suman, it will make a wrapped malatoron.
02:47 It will be eaten with langka.
02:48 And it will add fresh leaves of stevia to the fried food.
02:52 When it's cooked,
02:56 it will be eaten with special white sauce that stevia also uses.
03:02 Stevia plant, aside from being a natural sweetener,
03:14 can also change the lives of farmers and communities.
